Crash Video

Cicero and North Avenues - two different angles:

The turning vehicle makes a bad decision, but the unmarked vehicle is moving rather quickly compared to the rest of traffic. Headed to a call? Trying to catch up to a suspect vehicle? With no emergency equipment activated until after impact?

The Traffic Review Board is going to hand out some spankings.

If someone is turning in front of you, I think you should slow down in order to allow an opportunity for them to complete their turn and thus avoid the unfortunate consequence of your running into them. It's something positive you can do as a defensive driver.

Fuckin’ no-driving dummy.

Even at that speed the driver had time and room to avoid that car. Only… 1) as evidenced by the pitch of the nose and ass end of that squad, s/he didn’t brake as hard as they should have. And 2) the moron steered INTO the oncoming vehicle. Standing on the brake and turning LEFT would’ve prevented that collision.

It never ceases to amaze me how shitty most coppers drive. And these are on vehicles with technology that is supposed to decrease the likelihood of accidents. They barely drive past the end of the hood and never scan ahead. No common sense or accident avoidance skills or knowledge whatsoever. Which just made me think… Do they still have Peak Performance driving in the Academy? I’m gonna guess not seeing how many cars these cowboys tear up.

Traction control, antilock brakes, stability control etc. Just no Dummy Control.

Casualties of the war! Not sure why people have to learn the hard way. The department is going to take the officers hard earned money and let him or her sit home and think about what a screw-up they are at home without pay. Don’t lose your pay in these hard economic times.

The days of speeding around have been over for awhile now. The city only cares about lawsuits. The public or department members aren’t even considered. I’m surprised the department doesn’t put some type of speed limiters of their vehicles. The department’s main goal is not crime and it shows.

Tuning car makes normal decision, what is wrong is the speed of the CPD vehicle is going way too fast. That’s what you call a million dollar crash.

Fuckin’ ‘tards are clueless with all things common sense. I’d be willing to bet that the driver has at least 2 preventables in the last 12-18 months. This was completely avoidable, but that would mean knowing the basics of Driving 101. Was probably recording a TikToc video at the time. I hope the TRB hammers him or her.

The van turning was at fault, but I would say the risk of getting stuck with a red light camera ticket probably made the driver antsy to get through the intersection.

It seems to me both drivers were at fault. Maybe each thought that the other would slow down/stop. Playing chicken has a price. I've been in many situations where the oncoming driver would/will not stop even though he/she was running a red light. I don't want to be dead right. I've been driving for 55 years, drove cabs, APC's jeeps, trucks, hot rods and don't want to be involved in a head on. There are some stupid/unaware people out there. Itz a big world and there are plenty of stupids out there.

Start deducting pay from their checks until the costs of damage and injury are satisfied. Holding them accountable for wrongdoing by taking $ will wake everyone up and reduce these situations, especially vehicle pursuits.

It’s always interesting how quickly people jump to conclusions without facts. Fortunately, we don’t need speculation, the crash is captured on video, and it clearly shows that the squad car had the right of way. Traffic laws are not based on opinions or assumptions; they are clear: a turning vehicle must yield to oncoming traffic. The driver turning failed to do so, causing the crash.

For those claiming the squad car should have slowed down to “let the turning car go”, that’s not how traffic laws work. It’s the responsibility of the turning vehicle to ensure it is safe to proceed. If a driver pulls out in front of another vehicle that has the right of way, that’s on them.

As for the claims about the officer's speed, braking, or “steering into the car”, again, none of these comments are supported by evidence. People are making assumptions about things they cannot see or prove. The video shows what actually happened.

Most of these comments aren’t even about the crash—they’re just bitter, irrelevant rants about CPD, hiring standards, or social media. If you want to have a real discussion, start with facts instead of baseless accusations and insults. But what do I know... I'm just a dic...

You can absolutely tell who knows their job, IVC, traffic laws, etc and who doesn’t. People immediately whining about Tac or talking about speed. Is the squad going fast, sure. Does idiot driver making a left turn have to make sure he CAN and has to yield to everyone, YES. There used to be a lot more common sense in these comments. Obviously, a piss poor Detective. The video clearly shows the squad car, barely slowing down, and turning to the right, which is into the path of the oncoming vehicle turning left. And all traffic laws mean absolutely nothing when it’s that or physics. Physics wins every time. When a vehicle pulls into your path of travel, and you’re doing double the speed limit without justification/emergency equipment activated, “traffic laws” ain’t gonna prevent shit. Tactical driving skills and evasive, threshold maneuvering will. But you guys just keep on trying to justify a completely preventable accident buy some fucking moron who was completely not justified in driving in the manner in which they did. GPS and that video are going to bury them, and rightfully so. There is one person responsible for this collision, and it’s not the person making the left turn. The idiot piloting the squad car at over twice to legal speed limit for no reason. Had they been driving the limit, it’s pretty easy to surmise that they would’ve had reaction time/distance/speed all working in their favor to successfully stop or move out of the way before T boning that other motorist. But you keep making excuses for morons if it makes you feel better… “Detective.”

I don’t care what all the IVC “experts” say about the right of way and yielding. The tactical superstars responding to nothing at 2X+ posted speed limits WITH NO EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT ACTIVATED negates the IVC requirements. You are held to a higher standard and WILL be held accountable when you can’t justify driving like an asshole. Don’t forget kiddies…be careful when you decide to spin a tall tale explaining the unexplainable when asked for your statement. Your “handwaver that told you about the man with a gun”’ will not be on one of the single surveillance cameras in your path of travel. And you didn’t inform dispatch of this pressing on-view Priority 1A or throw out an imaginary flash. You fucked up plain and simple. Now think about this every time you drive a squad car from now on and imagine a family member being T-boned by some idiot 4 year wonder driving like an asshole for no reason. Grow the fuck up already.

If you activate the lights/sirens and drive at or just above the speed limit, and clear the intersections in a responsible manner you will arrive about 10-15 seconds later than if you drive like a banshee through intersections rolling the dice. You may be 15 seconds later but you will get there and be able to back up your fellow officers requesting help instead of calling for an ambulance for the person you just made rich and the partner in the passenger seat of your squad...

The department rarely make decisions based on IVC code. Unless you are tied up and, in the trunk, they will put you at fault. You could follow all the traffic laws and they will still hang you out to dry based on General orders and directives S/O's. Some bosshole somewhere will rule the accident as preventable. Thats just the way it is...all you Perry Masons out there GFY...

Ah, yes, when all else fails, ignore the facts, throw in some faux physics, and toss out insults as if that strengthens your argument. Classic.

Let’s break this down since reading comprehension doesn’t seem to be your strong suit.

Traffic Laws Exist for a Reason. A vehicle turning left must yield to oncoming traffic. That’s not an opinion, it’s the law. If you think otherwise, take it up with every traffic code in the country. If a driver turns left when it’s not safe to do so and gets hit, that’s their fault. Period.

Your “Physics” Argument is Nonsense. Physics doesn’t replace legal responsibility. A driver pulling in front of oncoming traffic doesn’t suddenly become the victim because “physics wins.” That’s not how it works. By your logic, any collision is the fault of the vehicle with the higher speed, no matter the circumstances. That’s not physics, that’s just stupidity.

Speculation Isn’t Evidence. You’re throwing around accusations about speed, GPS data, and justification without a shred of proof. Meanwhile, the video shows the left-turning driver making an unsafe move. That’s not speculation, that’s evidence. If you have a source that confirms “twice the speed limit,” feel free to share. Otherwise, all you’re doing is making baseless claims and hoping no one notices.

Your Bias is Showing. This isn’t about facts for you, it’s about your personal vendetta. You don’t care about who actually caused the crash, you just want to take a cheap shot at the driver (police). If the squad was stopped at a red light, you’d still find a way to blame them. That’s the difference between you and me, I deal in facts, not anti-police tantrums disguised as analysis.

Insults Don’t Make You Right. If your argument was solid, you wouldn’t need to rely on weak personal attacks. Calling me a “piss poor detective” doesn’t change the fact that the law and the video don’t support your claim. It just makes you look like someone who lost the argument before they even started typing.

But hey, keep frothing at the mouth over things you can’t prove. The rest of us will stick with reality.

By the way, this so-called "piss poor detective" is confident that you’re not a cop, never have been, and never will be, regardless of whether or not you managed to get yourself on the job.

You’re an absolute moron. This isn’t speculation, it’s fact, backed by the very evidence you brought into this discussion. But what do I know... I'm just a dic...
