The University of Chicago is commonly known as "the place fun goes to die."
But now, a professor claims to have discovered why certain neighborhoods are more dangerous than others:
“I think it’s really useful first to recognize ... that gun violence in America is not what we all think from reading the news and watching entertainment and watching ‘The Wire.’ We all tend to think of gun violence as being basically gang wars over drug-selling turf — deliberate, premeditated, it’s got an objective, has some sort of economic motivation.
“That’s not what most shootings in America are. Most shootings ... are actually garden-variety arguments that escalate and spin out of control and end in tragedy because someone’s got a gun. And it turns out that there are features of these two neighborhoods that lead arguments to be more likely to happen in Greater Grand Crossing and more likely to escalate and end in tragedy.
Got that? "...garden variety arguments that escalate..." and end up in shootings "...because someone has a gun." Golly, the next step is disarming everyone, right? Because that worked everywhere, to the point that Illinois (and other states) don't even have to jail and imprison people for violent crimes.
He's touting a lot of the same old crap that hundreds of lib-tards always seem to believe in:
“Make even better use of data. There is some predictable structure for when and where shootings are most likely to happen. And you can use data to make sure that we’ve got police officers in the right places in the right times, to be eyes on the street.
“And we can think of doing things that you wouldn’t even think of as gun violence — zoning commercial so that you have more foot traffic in a neighborhood. We can see in studies that can reduce violence rates by 20% or 30% in the area around where you’ve zoned a store.
“Cleaning up vacant lots and turning them into pocket parks — seems on its face like a huge distraction from the gun violence problem, but we have really good evidence out of Philadelphia that shows that can reduce the number of shootings around that area by like 20% or 30% by bringing more people out into public.
Yeah, "bringing more people out into public" just provides more backstops for stray rounds, especially in the Age of the Glock Switch where it used to be between six and a dozen rounds at a scene, and now it's dozens, even hundreds.
And putting "police officers in the right places in the right times" might require some sort of automated detection system - like walkie talkies on sticks or something to get cops to the scenes faster.
We're old(er) and we had nearly three decades on the street. Shootings are about very few things:
- money
- territory
- "respect"
- women
- historical revenge for past wrongs
And sometimes, a motherf#$%er just needs to be shot. Has that changed?

Does the data show any correlations among the shooters, such as: employment status, presence of alcohol, presence of narcotics, age, race, religion (if any), gender, sexual preferences, lgbqti, height, weight, economic status, political party, claimed gang membership, law-abiding firearm owner vs acquired firearm illegally.
Gosh this should keep some professors writing grants and staying employed for awhile, but do you think they would actually look at, let alone, publish answers to these questions?
Never anything about instilling a moral compass in students while in K thru 12 grades. No just blame the gun, remove the gun, sprinkle in parks and flowers and by magic no more deaths.

It isn’t the schools’ responsibility to “instill a moral compass.” That is the responsibility of the PARENTS and when the majority of these kids don’t have a father present in their lives and they grow up in neighborhoods where the culture allows the gang rules to be the guide there is little chance of these kids having a moral compass guided by God. When millions of black children are killed by abortion every year and human life has so little value that kids are murdered for their sneakers or for looking at someone the “wrong way,” all the gun control in the world won’t stop the killing.

As someone who follows the stats on Heyjackass.com my solution to the high murder stats in Chicago is to have a blizzard every weekend all year long. There is a direct correlation between low body counts and blizzards. In the summer when the weather is nice and there is increased “foot traffic” in certain neighborhoods, the body counts rises dramatically. I think my suggestion of having more blizzards makes about as much sense as rezoning and “pocket parks.”

What good does it do to have police presence if you don’t let the cops be proactive?
Instead of giving all that money to this professor, they should give it to me. Since the first of the year in Chicago there have only been six homicides where the victim is white or other (Heyjackass), all the rest have been overwhelmingly Black people. Maybe our professor should try to find the reason black people kill each others at such a high rate? Now he’s going to say, poverty, drugs and guns. Yet the poorest area of our country is Appalachia, where there is both high unemployment and drug abuse, plus everyone has a gun. Like everywhere else the majority of the their homicides involve the same demographic as Chicago. So, if guns, drugs and poverty is the root cause, why are those hillbillies not racking up the homicides like in every black neighborhood?

lol- I handled a shooting once where the community was celebrating “prom” at 2am in a vacant lot (bc that’s what normal adults who are no longer in HS in the hood do on a Friday night). About a half dozen shot, including one woman holding a baby (again totally normal in hood). The alleged intended targets weren’t even there. GTFO with your more people out and about prevents shootings.

Adult uncle, in a wheelchair no less from a GSW, gave the 14 year old niece the gun to solve the problem. Nobody wants to admit it’s how that community regards and accepts violence as a resolution.
