Not a Bad Idea

This is a rather .... dark solution to an ongoing problem, but nothing we haven't suggested on occasion:

  • A Southern California mayor is under fire for wanting to eliminate his city’s homeless population by giving them “all the fentanyl they want” — a shocking remark he reinforced by calling for a federal “purge.”

Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris shared his controversial views during a Feb. 25 city council meeting when a resident took issue with the city’s attempt to address the homeless crisis by “enclosing” the unhoused at an abandoned golf course near a residential neighborhood.

“What I want to do is give them free fentanyl,” Parris said as he interrupted the woman’s comments, according to footage of the meeting.

Our only objection to this would be spending taxpayer money on the fentanyl. Rather, the city should empty out whatever their Evidence and Recovered Property Section is and distribute the fentanyl before sending in the scoops to empty the parks. The more narcotics they have would be indicative of the size of the problem.

  • “I made it very clear I was talking about the criminal element that were let out of the prisons that have now become 40 to 45% of what’s referred to as the homeless population,” Parris told the outlet.

“They are responsible for most of our robberies, most of our rapes, and at least half of our murders,” he added, without offering proof or data to support his claims. “There’s nothing that we can do for these people.”

Long time readers will know we have steadfastly advocated for discontinuing the NarCan programs prevalent here and elsewhere as after nearly thirty years of policing and an unfortunate family association, we see zero redeeming qualities in heroin addicts and zero chances of any changes despite numerous attempts at rehabilitation.

There's no downside to less drug addicts that bring families and society nothing but misery.

"Our only objection to this would be spending taxpayer money on the fentanyl."

Not much different than spending tax money to repatriate illegal immigrants.

Both are a good investment.

This is an idea that should be shared with Brandon Johnson. Cut Narcan out of the budget and let the homeless take fentanyl that will undoubtedly free up resources in the fire side as well at hospitals.

Hard drug addiction is a largely self-limiting problem, provided the treatment of said addiction is not being used to create a huge growth industry.

I don't know about you in Illinois, but here in Ontario it is certainly that: addiction treatment has become a jobs program for people who couldn't quite manage the bar exam, and it is worth billions each year.

I do not understand, nor will I ever, why it is the taxpayer's job to try and rectify the results of poor judgement. Addiction as a result of being in a car accident and drugs were used to reduce your pain, and you wake up to a dependency? I will sign those checks myself to get you the help you need.

Addiction as a result of trying things out at a party, because some asshole on a rap song told you it would be cool? Not my monkeys, and certainly not my responsibility. To be told otherwise is beyond insulting.

Causing misery to family and death in the community, many alcoholics have died a slow death - and it's LEGAL.

I had a partner who’d say he wished certain parts of the city had a 12 foot wall around them and give everyone inside a gun and three bullets (so they’d have to use some discretion). Also, no police response in that no go zones. His theory was the problems would be solved in less than a year and you could take down the walls.

I’d agree with you but I’ve addicts in my family. Most of them have managed to beat death for 30 years. Then they just get old and move onto health issues that Medicaid and the taxpayer covers.

The Democrats don’t care about people doing fentanyl. They proved that.

Spending money on the fentanyl compared to the medical costs of treating OD victims would be more cost effective in the long run.

The people who have a big problem with this, who think it is so barbaric and savage, generally have no problem with late term ab*rtions. Funny how that works.

Kind of my idea too, drug town I liked to call it. They voluntarily enter, free drug drops every week. Walls around it, they're sealed in. There's shelter, water, food drops too, but they go in there's no coming out. If they get 3 strikes on the outside, that's where they end up too. It would stop and those that can't, well, here's home....

Quit rushing lights and siren to OD calls. Take your time. There's no expectation of urgency to get there in any order. Same in the suburbs. Rushing there to keep them alive only to OD in a few more days. Don't get hurt for them. When you get there you get there.
