What the ??!!?!
Chicago police were conducting a death investigation after a 34-year-old off-duty officer died early Thursday at the 18th District station on the Near North Side.
In a written statement released early Thursday, Chicago police say they were “mourning the tragic loss of an officer within the 18th District station.”
The 34-year-old female officer was found about 2:30 a.m. at the station, 1160 N. Larrabee St., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
According to a law enforcement source, she was found in a first-floor bathroom with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
There is a link in the post directly below this about the "strategic plan" and Larritorious states:
“My objective since I got here is the top-down effect. It starts with me,” he said. “We have to be responsible, and we have to take full responsibility for everything that happens in this department when it comes to accountability, when it comes to wellness.”
With off-the-charts daily stressors that have all too often led to death by suicide by his men and women in blue, Snelling says a big part of his plan centers on mental health wellness.
Well?
Sympathies to everyone over in 018.

Another suicide. Per snelling
Tragic hopefully nothing related to the district itself. I'm not saying something personal is better but if it's in house I feel it's just a domino affect of shit to come :| be safe everyone and it's okay to ask for a friend
Supt. Snelling should be banned from public interviews.
What in the actual fuck?!?
Rest in peace officer, only you knew your pain.
TIME TO DEFUND AND DISBAND COPA!
April: It starts with me.
June, July, August and September: Enjoy your cancelled days off assholes.
Rest in Peace
Here’s a start Larry, get rid of the 7 layers of bull shit you call accountability. I call it punitive damages and that’s exactly what it is. You go in for a bull shit allegation and get exonerated on the original allegation, but get fucked for some nonsense like late activation on a BWC or some uniforms infraction.
One of the instructors for the CI/wellness class mentioned that officers under 3 years are the most frequent users of EAP. I didn’t ask if he knew the average age of this group but it sounds like there is definitely a problem with the mental health of our newer brothers and sisters.
They wanna help prevent suicide….
Stop stripping people for BS.
"It starts with me" ---How about paying a water bill.
RIP Officer. So sad that this is what it came to.
Rest in Peace. We will all miss that contagious laughter of yours. You will never be forgotten.
Retired here. And I used to work in 018. We had a run of three suicides in just over a year and we thought things were bad. That was 20 years ago. I cant imagine the added pressures of today, the work hours, and the manpower shortages. Top that all off with a city government and brass like ours and you have a crisis like this. One of these is too many. And in the station? Unthinkable...
Please think of those you leave behind. If you are having thoughts like this, there is help. But you are the one that has to reach out. It's not easy...but just dont do this...dont choose this option. There is a life outside of police work, and beyond.
May G-d help those who knew this officer. You are doing the Lord's work. Never forget that...
My cousin ended his life with a self inflicted gun shot. CPD over 20 years and the last guy you would expect to do it. You just don't know how hard the stress of life and the job affect people. Don't just ignore the pressure, get some therapy it helps.
Another suicide, the tragic new norm within this department.
Too sad for words.
Very sad. Officers are not getting the support they need from Chicago leadership. The job has become too stressful and many are incapable of dealing with it. 💙🙏😢
Soldiers in combat get battle fatigue same applies to Chicago Police Officer. Chicago is one big battleground and I’m talking about within the department.
Same song every time. But we don’t know the life of this woman, let’s not speculate or blame it on the job. It could have been anything and that’s the main issue with mental health, it’s secret, hidden, hush hush. The only way to catch it is personal relationships with your peers, getting to know them on a deep level where they’d share their struggles with you. And their struggles may not have anything to do with being a copper.
Officers spend eight hour tours with their partner and co-workers. We need to keep an eye on each other. When your outgoing partner or co-workers
seems indifferent or has the doesn't care attitude, these are warning signs. Get involved. Intervene ever so slightly and remind them of resources such as family , friends and other services offered by the department. Your a good friend if you show concern and compassion getting involved if you sense danger heading off a tragedy.
If the job isn't for you just quit. Getting tired of the easy way out. Life is filled with stressful situations, marriage, kids, finances, deal with it.
Officers are afraid to ask for help. Afraid of being stripped of their credentials and labeled as crazy. Fuck you 35th, 5th floor.
The bottom line to all of this is that our nation suffers from a serious spiritual deficit. Nowhere is it more acute than in large blue cities. RIP, Officer.
Shitty bosses is the reason for low morale and bad policy. I have never in my 25 years seen so many incompetent bosses. If I didn’t have five children that I was raising I would have left already. Most numbers of idiots running the department in CPD history.
Next it will be someone in front of Chicago Police Department Headquarters on a news live shot! What do officers need to do to make a statement for help!
This job sucks at this point and time*
If you are in that dark place please reach out and get some help. Peer support officer on your watch, EAP, partner, Watch Commander, etc... There is no shame in seeking out help. The slogan on the side of the squad car says " We serve and protect." Sometimes we have to add "ourselves" to the end of that slogan.
That’s very closed minded of a comment to say there’s a newer problem out here. There has always been a problem and these old dinosaurs want to ignore that fact and say it’s not okay to not feel a little off
Unbelievable. We are losing more officers from suicide than we are to enemy gun fire for the first time in history.
I normally don’t post but after talking to other officers I felt like the word has to get out. We are ran by fools who have been over promoted. This was a final act of crying for help. On this job none will coming from Gold Stars.
Agree. The outward appearance is they are there for you. The truth is they lie and play games.
The real problem is management!
We work for a retaliatory regime! For the bosses it’s all about their friends and family. For the workers your only judged by the bosses as what you did that day. Good work gets you no where.
Nitwit running the department. Spent the bulk of his time acting like an Army Drill Instructor. What does he know about anything. The Army would never make a drill instructor a For Star General………
CORRECT. Haha!
There is no way to know why. You can be close to them and think you know them well and it comes as a surprise. They keep it to themselves and don’t share with anyone. I speak from experience and we still don’t know why and never will. Neither any of his friends, family or co workers. Everyone was shocked and said he would be the last we expected to do it
Without a suicide note you will never know
If anyone is here for more than just a check they are toooooo dumb to be a cop. One who navigates a mine field shouldn’t take additional steps than necessary. This job is simple so why are cops unaliving themselves because of the JOB. That’s beyond unreasonable.
Fuck you. You never took responsibility for selling out 2 Sgt's facing jail time for actions deemed against department policy even when you knew what they did was legit. Then you gave the "expert" a merit promotion for his cowardice. Fuck you trackk.
STFU. Most idiotic comment of the day....
They have turned this once great department to a miserable shit hole. You come in with a smile, and they will make sure they will make your life a miserable hell for 8 and a half hours. Nobody can take that, and nobody should stand for that. I am not sure which one is worse. The incompetent governor, the incompetent mayor, the incompetent superintendent with his generic copy and paste Eap messages, our incompetent commanders, lieutenants or sergeants . Just name it. When it was the last time any supervisors reached out to the officers to see how are they doing ? Nobody cares. If you got a problem, see EAP. That is the answer for everything nowadays . The officers are scared or intimidated from talking to their immediate supervisor. Places that used to be great to work, like 001, 018, 019, 016 are now places of depression where officers are constantly getting bullied , not just by the citizens but by their own supervisors. This young officer made a statement to all these bullies that she will not take it any longer. She could do it in her house or somewhere else , but she chose the place that inflicted her the most pain . She is not the first one to do it in a police station, and will not be the last one. What a loss of such a young talented person , and what a shame .
Watch the you tube interview with Delta Force veteran Tom Spooner. He says that he believes law enforcement officers experience more trauma than even special operations veterans. That says a lot, especially coming from him.
Something isn't right obviously. May she rest in peace. Too many suicides. Maybe better psych evals during the hiring process.
This wins the most absurd piece of shit comment of the year.
The job doesn’t care about us.
The living have to continue to move forward, like it or not. Even when you or I pass there will be people who are upset because of a bad hair cut.
“ Shitty bosses is the reason for low morale and bad policy. I have never in my 25 years seen so many incompetent bosses. If I didn’t have five children that I was raising I would have left already. Most numbers of idiots running the department in CPD history.”
This mindset is exactly the problem. “If I didn’t have 5 kids I’d be gone.” “If I didn’t have kids in catholic school I’d be gone.” “If I didn’t have a mortgage I’d be gone.” “If I didn’t have the OT id be gone.” You were led into the money trap and now can’t leave. That’s what 100% of people say, too
There will ALWAYS be an excuse if you look for it. I’m sure after 25 years you’re in some nice position, so it’s easier to ride it out. But think what you’ve missed with five children. If you work days, you miss out. If you work afternoons you miss out. If you work mids you’re there, but also taking years off your life.
Listen to my advice (or don’t because I’m sure you won’t care what the internet is telling you)….retire. Enjoy what time you have left, with the memories you’ve missed out on. It’s what I did, even leaving behind a promotion, 10’s of thousands of dollars, and a do-nothing spot.
They're called snowflakes for a reason. I'm guilty of being overly nice to my kids. There is no accountability or consequences for anything they do wrong, thus they're not ready for life's problems.
Everyone blaming the department, we're all adults. The resources are there, if nobody wants to use them so be it.
It’s the way they treat us now. Most of us understand that this job isn’t everything. The new people are taught that this job is it. Also in Chicago it’s hard to make these wages for most of the people on this job.
And the department does little.
We're raising kids that can't cope with stress.
Screw all that. Go to a Psychiatrist in Indiana.
Yes! The department never Rotates the officers in and out of the combat / bad districts or inside and outside.
Deputy Chief Bulnes In charge the police training academy couldn’t come up with curriculum to stop a homeless man from Pissing on himself. Let alone stop or slowdown suicide by police officers. Bulnes is a reason too do the unthinkable. Chicago police department has a lack of real leadership.
Easy way?? WTF, you ignorant asshole.
Are the stress management classes still available? Maybe the FOP can get CPD to hold more of them. I went to them, and they were helpful. It's a start...we have to start somewhere...They always started a session on suicidal thoughts and external pressures. Peer support always came out to introduce themselves as well. Again...it's not enough, but it is a start.
What are Forensics doing to help get to the facts of the case. Other agencies when at a pause in an investigation lean on Forensics to gather more information. At a shooting scene a ET told me they don’t want them doing nothing but picking up the garbage and they send it all to the State Police. I thought to myself here is a guy who wants to work and they don’t want him to. The department dumped down every where by ignorant bosses.
Not a cop. But I can tell you all that there are more of us that appreciate what you do than it appears.
I take a moment to say thank you EVERY opportunity that I get, including flagging you down as you patrol my neighborhood.
So sorry for the pain of yet another loss.
God bless the police.
Agree. So sad. You come on and everyone doesn’t make it to retirement and a happy life after. There is more to life than this job. Some people buy into the department’s BS and make CPD their life.
I have come close a few times to considering killing my self. I have learned that you can’t make everyone happy. The minute I excepted to take a “who cares attitude” it helped me continue on. Focus on yourself and who cares about what everyone else thinks.
The young officers aren’t drinking like the older officers did. That might be the major difference. I remember going across the street after work with the watch and we would decompress. Now the younger officers don’t have that.
Fuck off. That is all
Just go through the motions with CPD. It’s all rigged. Promotions are given not earned. Very few people actually scored high. Most cheated. If your connected you get in trouble nothing happens. Report a Boss nothing happens.
CPD is an Illusion.
It used to be that commanders were pretty much untouchable and left alone by downtown. They could run their districts however they wanted. U needed something, the commanders could help u out. Now, the commanders are under all this pressure for numbers and accountability that helping out officers is way down the rung. They pressure the Lts for numbers and clearing queues and all this elearning which just keeps piling on the po’s. It’s a never ending barrage of useless meaningless shit u have to do ON TOP of actually going out and doing your job. We all feel the stress. Everyday. It’s terrible. The job is terrible. It’s not enjoyable and I believe 99% are purely doing it now for a paycheck and can’t wait to get out of here. The oversight has destroyed the job.
I’m hurting today. I feel like my sister in blue. I understand why she did it…………. I just feel bad.
💔Rest in Peace Officer Torres, may GOD carry your family 💙💜🖤🕊️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
The police hate other police who speak out against injustice and the violation of rights. I’ll continue to wait for the day the police speak out against their own.
The younger generation also does not have a stigma associated with mental health.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. We all have issues. Some choose to go to EAP. Some don't and for some, the issues are so bad that they will kill themselves.
I knew there would be someone like you on the comment board.
I am so glad you never experience anxiety, stress, headaches due to mental health, feeling down, depressed, etc...
For the rest of us, we are human. Seek help! Talk to someone. Make an appointment with EAP.
Or the younger generation are more open to therapy…
Don’t reach out to any of these people other than a partner/close peer on the watch. Watch commander will protect themselves and get you stripped, as will the sergeant or any ranking member above you. Would not go through EAP or peer support for same reasons.
The only help is the peace death brings. It is selfish of the living to expect one in constant pain to stay around.
We understand when a 90 YO takes this step due to a diagnosis of cancer, please be caring for this lady as well.
In my 25 years OTJ I saw a lot of this, and the ones I knew personally, not all the police, there were zero signs.
Bless each of you and her loved ones with compassion $ strenghth
It’s not the extended work hours that cause stress and suicides upon officers; it’s the corruption and evil of Supervisors that lack compassion, sweep issues under the rug, gigging officers over petty things, never showing appreciation to the officers and only care about getting promoted. CPD also need to stop lying that they care and telling officers to go to EAP because their hands are tied up in the politics of corrupt supervisors.
Or…. They’re smart enough to realize that they need help. Plus, you get a day off if you check in for 30 min.
Snelling should be demoted to the rank he earned, take all his merit promotions and appointment as Superintendent away.
Everyone is pouring in saying seek help and some are recommending EAP. Of course if you need help get it, reach out to whoever you’re comfortable with, but be mindful of the recent changes to EAP. E06-01 was just updated 25Mar25 and now says “To ensure the highest standards of quality care, the Professional Counseling Division will take notes on all Department members and families seeking counseling services. Counseling notes will be kept in a secure, privileged, and HIPPA-compliant platform. Notes will be kept confidential and are not subject to discovery in any proceeding. The PCD may not use or disclose protected health information, except as permitted or required by law, including the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Confidentiality Act and when consistent with the City of Chicago HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.”
Previously EAP was prohibited from taking notes. The major advantage of EAP was that there were no records. Nothing available to turn over to anyone even if they requested it. Now if you reach out to them there’s a record and notes for some sleazy attorney to subpoena. Do you think the activists in robes that we have here won’t grant their request?
Here we are just over two weeks after this policy change was implemented.
Please if you need help get it! Just know what you’re getting into now before you seek help from EAP. There are other services available and hopefully the FOP can provide some guidance here on what we can do now in light of the new policy.
I don't want to see conehead or Snelling at this officer's funeral. They'll come in like they care, but it won't be genuine. They'll throw around a word salad or two and the local media will eat it up. Thats the Chicago way.
As far as I am concerned, this one is on Conehead and Snelling and even J-Cat. Until we see some substantive change in SOP the next one will be on them as well. We need to ramp up the stress management classes for members. I don't think they should be mandatory, but voluntary. With real working professionals speaking there, not department handpicked hacks with their BS college degrees.
The membership welcomes Chaplin's and Peer support members at this time, and not politicians and meritoriously promoted hacks.
Just horrible! Department isn’t doing shit. Nothing to see here. Just move along.
Who can deal with all the crap. We all can’t get taken care of.
Officer wellness is preached but not practice. They treat officers, bosses like shit, have no empathy for anyone but themselves. Accountability starts at the top and it trickles down but yet the people at the bottom are the ones suffering the effects. Keep your emails to yourself it’s the same song and dance after something happens. RIP Officer. Two more years of this clown show at city hall and at 35th street.
It isn’t going to get better until we get new management. I don’t see that happening in my life time.
Well said. I feel the same way.
I’m so angry with the way the CPD is being ran into the ground. I had to listen about city stickers from the boss on how we better have them. How about check the lot and talk to the people who need that conversation. Lazy clowns. Let’s just forego roll calls with BS.
My prayers and condolences to friends and family.
CPD has officially been destroyed by politicians and management.
The real problem is management!
4/10/2025 11:57:06 AM
Did management make them do?
Department is fake.
The watch commander will now read from a memo from the superintendent for the next three days in roll calls on all watches...These are our leaders and this is the reality that we are living in.
RIP officer Torres May G-d grant you the peace you sought
This has nothing to do with stripping
CPD has been shitshow since you started kid. Even before I started. Only the faces and names change. The politics will never change. Chicago is a corrupt to the core city. Since its inception in 1837. Brush up on your history.
And everyone should have a city sticker. Compliance with city ordinances and state law is a requirement of the job. If you think that is pressure, then maybe you should go back to being a barista. (Or bro-ista) If you think that our bosses care about you, you came on the wrong job. Caring about employees is not how they got promoted in the first place. Maybe your bosses are tired of hearing you whine about how CPD is being run into the ground. Set an example, and be the change...
Now, I need to greive in my own way to accept this young officers death.
It’s time we normalize checking in on the strong ones, the quiet ones, and everyone in between.
Mental health matters
Support matters
Compassion matters
Sometimes we don't want to speak to two-faced fake ass pos on the job. You know it and I know these people or folks exist. So kma
I wish I was there to give you a hug 💙 know someone is thinking about you and sending love and prayers
Or they are softer than puppy shit. A bunch of “yes men” looking to make a boss happy to get off midnights.
Hang on, tomorrow is a new day. Please don't make that final decision. You are loved by friends & family more than you know.
Think about this: those who wish to take leave or take a day off to decompress, they're bullied by the bosses, harassed to return while stressed/sick then ghosted by the medical section. Everyday stressors piled on just trying to navigate through the bureaucracy. The only people doing their jobs are the officers. I'm reading about the frustration from the officers all of the time, those who are calling and emailing HR, calling and emailing the medical section, calling and emailing tuition reimbursement. All of the little things that officers do to better themselves is met with unnecessary bull__. Stressors that are taking place before their tour starts. No one in cushy positions is accountable for anything...not crime reduction or officer wellness. So, why does the department make it difficult for officers seeking these resources to make their lives better? The minimum each house mouse can do is THEIR JOB. Lose the attitude, answer the calls and emails when officers reach out, and provide the service. Otherwise, go back to patrol. Every entity/unit/do nothing position out of HQ single-handedly makes working officers' lives harder. So, Snelling look within HQ.. start there.
You expect me to spy on my coworkers. I don’t get payed enough for that.
Or….they have a greatly different psychological makeup than officers of yesteryear.
It's not up to you.
Amen.
They always tell shit to the guy doing the right thing.
The job isn’t for everyone. I have many coworkers that are great real estate agents, plumbers, electricians, adjunct professors, etc…..but bad police skills.
Don’t trust note taking. Remember when the Union contract said get rid of old CR#’s. The department never did. The FOP took them to court and lost. The company always has the advantage. Don’t trust them to be honest.
Very good wisdom. You speak the truth.
Spoken like a true boss. Way to go Sgt.
Forensics have become useless under current leadership. All true. In the know.
Hey my friend , please reach out to a close buddy to talk to. It helps !!
I feel the same way. It’s hard at times but I keep getting up and doing it. For those who never felt this way, they will never understand.
I’m not getting involved in your nonsense.
Spoken like a true boss who had everything come easy.
I could honestly see that. Five minutes later the bosses would have his or her brain matter washed away and say go handle your calls. The police department was once a organization where we looked out for each other. Now it’s everyone for them selves.
They have the department they want. They would rather me and you retire.
Bulnes is a useless clown who was merit every rank. But never did anything good. Never earned rank.
Go F yourself!
Go FUCK yourself asshole
You are a real fucking asshole. Spoken like a true old alky Mike g. No wife. No kids. Just alky old friends.
Deepest sympathies to CPD and the family of your lost officer. - suburban cop
Go away Larry
Thin sheets, down beats, house mice, mission cars, and supervisors working split shifts are just some of the reasons the regular beat officer is over stressed.
To: 4/10/2025 02:04:56 PM you are part of the problem advising those hurting not to seek help but instead go to someone who is untrained!!! Been there, in the 80’s EAP was a stigma so instead when you were hurting you’d go have a few drinks and the next day you are right back hurting. EAP is confidential! EAP has therapists who deal with the police! To all of you blaming the Dept look at yourselves first… Did anyone know what this officer was going through? If so did you help or did you suggest as this moron is suggesting, don’t go to EAP. It’s amazing how you quickly rush to blame everyone including the CPD!
When I needed help I never contacted EAP.
I just looked for psychologists who took our health insurance online. I made an appointment and went to see the therapist for years and was even prescribed antidepressants. I never told CPD, it’s none of their damn business.
It saved my life.
If I could do it anyone can. F— this department. All I care about is my kids and they saw and knew and respected that I got myself help. They were who I’ve done everything for and all they wanted was for me to not give up and stick around.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you have to go to EAP or this or that.
Do it on your own. You owe it to yourself and those who love you.
Back in the day we would smoke two packs of Marlboro Reds a day and drink a 12 pack to ease the stress. Worked for the time being but was a slow suicide. Some guys worked out to excess and lived quite a few years longer.
I kinda agree with one of the replies. You tell ur sgt or w/c and they HAVE to take steps to cover their ass. You will end up in some hospital. If it’s a last resort, fuck it and do it. But, if u can go thru eap or another avenue, I would prob encourage that route instead.
How bout mandatory stress management class. Instead of all these total useless bullshit deescalation crap they keep feeding us.
Let's point out facts. There is something at it's core that is absolutely fucking horrific with this place. It claims at least 5 of us a year. Snelling can't stop it nor can most people who've been promoted here. While I'm of the opinion if an officer is feeling that feeling come on there should be a program to have officers take the gun away from the officer if called and relieve them with pay until they are in a better place and ready to do this job. Until the rotten core is figured out of what that actually is and remedied we need real programs or studies created in order to combat this symptom of a real fucked up problem here. I've been there so have countless other coppers. The only reason I'm here to type this is because I was able to reach out to a friendly face who helped me get the help I needed. Hope the officers family finds better days ahead and peace in their time here on Earth.
U ever hear the way our top brass speaks to its commanders, captains? Just read a few posts down from Betancourt's email and you can see how shitty they treat even the commanders. It’s not professional, it’s not nice, it’s nasty. That nastiness trickles down and the whole department gets infected.
Could you just imagine if you had nice, well meaning, intelligent people at the top that treated its officers and command staff with kindness? Maybe that’s what we need, to change this whole bully culture. Promote some genuinely nice kind smart people. What do we have to lose?
Guys a want to be marine, but has no stones and would sell his mama for a promotion. Sell out loser! What a disappointment he’s become!
They fill up fast and, you can only go every other year.
Good advice if there are signs Most don’t Most of the suicides came as a surprise to everyone. If any officer knew this officer had any idea they would have reached out and tried to help her
Whether you retired or are going on medical what a fucked up thing to say. Maybe the bosses are assholes, the mayor, the democrats, the ghetto ass shit birds that can’t act right summer or any particular time, but honestly, I retired. I don’t miss that bullshit, but calling my fellow officers assholes when they are just trying to get to the end like us all. My guess is you were always one of those self serving cocksuckers b4 the job, on the job and after the job.
They might be different. But I’d also argue, they face a lot more to adjust to than officers did 50, 40, 30, 20 years ago. You weren’t the enemy decades ago to the general public & you could actually go do your job, feel like the police, have some fun etc. There’s none of that. Liberals ruined policing.
And what of the second watch officers in 018 who came into the station from the alley to start their tour and were confronted by our grieving building maintenance worker mopping up the gruesome aftermath of this tragedy? Why in G*d’s name didn’t the supervisors have the forethought and decency to seal off all access to the back hallway until the scene was clear? Why weren’t partitions put up to block views from the elevator area? And why wasn’t an outside service brought in to handle cleaning the scene?
Retired CPD Revolver Cop Says:
Rest in Peace , Officer, protect us all now as you join St. Michael and the rest of the Angels. We are all still One.
Godspeed young Officer…
God bless The Chicago Police Department.
Please remember, you matter-you absolutely and positively matter to those that matter.
Retired, 30+
You’re a moron. It could have nothing to do with the job or it could be a combo of job affecting personal life or vice versa . 34 is an age as a woman the biological clock is ticking, if you don’t have kids (I pray she didn’t leave children behind). She could have had health issues, suffered personal losses of parents, a pregnancy etc. Depression is an actual physical as well as mental illness. It causes a chemical brain imbalance which leads to a skewed view of your life. You can feel extreme pain or extreme numbness. Most want that feeling to end. So STFU.
Job is stressful, sometimes there are other problems in a Police Officers life. Family, gambling, drinking, drugs, lovers, spouses, yes bully bosses or fellow officers. Just pray for the young female that took her life and her family. Her child has lost a Mother. We lost an officer.
I have an alcoholic relative. They tried to commit suicide. Alcohol isn’t a solution if you’re depressed, but social contact helps/ maybe that’s what you’re trying to say.
Yes. Yes yes. Its disgusting. The union knows, the lawyers know but nothing will be done. Some Officers cant handle it. It breaks them. I dont know the cause of her pain, maybe not work related. But shit like this done over and over to coppers because copa demands it. My friend wrked there and quit, told me how it works, he could not continue to be part of ruining lives. Like I said, the lawyers they send w you, they know, the fop knows, they really dont care. Im sure there are others that know what Im saying. I cant say names
I spoke up once at an officer wellness event. I didn’t have to, but I thought it was important to share my own experience 20 years ago with depression and encourage officers to go on the medical even if just a few days to cope and make some calls for help etc. The very next day I got called for “Random Drug.” lol- it sealed the deal for me- I put in my retirement papers right after that, This department will never change, they talk out of both sides of their mouth.
This poor girl had 3 years on and worked in CAPS. Its unlikely the job. Relationships are the major cause of most of these suicides. Access to a weapon makes it easier to make a bad spontaneous decision. The lack of emotional resilience is a factor.
Most comments here are projections of your own feelings and frustrations. This poor kid obviously was suffering and in that moment could not see the light at the end of a temporary tunnel. By the way, I have never seen as many resources as there are now for officers. We need to be honest about that fact.
It’s the upper management that allows this stress to be present in every officers life. We need a union that will show their voice. We need to be heard. Get rid of the narrow minded police haters in the COPA completely. They have no idea what we do everyday and the trauma we experience. Second give the police accountability back to internal affairs. We don’t need an oversight agency that is looking to have every officer in every incident. This department needs qualified not merit individuals in internal affairs. Quit nit picking on bullshit uniform infractions. That only increases the stress on working police officers. We need to put our dress blues on and march to city hall and all over this city as an army. These libtards do it everyday for issues in other countries. Our fight is here on our front lawn. Enough is enough I have been to too many funerals with my dress blues on. Time to wear it and gain the respect we deserve. Time to bring back the Insane fish. Let the troops now put the pressure on where it hurts these rag asses the most. RIP Officer
Condolences to the Women & Men of CPD.
Fuck them. My motto is don't get ulcers, give them.
Holy shit... that's terrible. If you're thinking of suicide, go talk with someone. There's a national 3-digit suicide hotline - dial 988
Bully Hein is the first pos that has to go. Has no class or empathy. Fk him
What idiot let the 018 cleaning crew mop up? Probably knew her like everyone else.... insensitive tard supervisors.... retired from this pretend clown show run by morons 2 years ago. Rip.
Nobody is violating rights on purpose, never seen it, never will see it. When it happens it’s by ignorance of the officer, never intentional nor with malice. But you can get personally fucked over for all I care about some fool.
He (or she) is only mocking latorious insincerity and pointing out his hypocritical statements. It is latorious referring to the RA o & file as “assholes” and NOT the commenter.
So get a clue and lighten up, Francis !
Fop has zero power to protect you from anything. Notes in EAP not being used against you? Cmon now. Look up the body worn camera order/agreement and see how long video should be kept.
This affects all generations, races and both genders.
There has been an increasing number of retirees that couldn’t fight the demons any longer.
God Bless all of us and please seek help, if for no other reason than to F—- this dept/city and make them put more money into protecting our mental well-being and our lives !
The department bears some responsibility for this. They know it. Aside from all the motivational speeches and unit parties, the machine offers coppers a philosophy...go out and confront potentially deadly force situations, you shoot and we examine it like the JFK assassnation. If one tiny detail doesn't add up in the millisecond you made that decision, you may be charged with murder. If you are justified, we will be complicit in how it will haunt you for the rest of your life, even apologizing for the copper's justified action. The entire system revolves like a planet around that philosophy. It's a lot of stress.
This particular incident does not hav anything to do with stripping, but the stripped people are at an increased risk. The dept is pushing people and some of them are already on the edge.
I remember a few years ago, when at every turn the Department was encouraging us to access EAP, and explaining the process. I remember one PO showing us just how easy it was to access the EAP website through The Wire, and there was the list of available therapists we could “easily” reach out to. Anyway, I finally hit a point where I felt I needed to work some things out. So I went on the EAP website, found the therapist in my area, and decided to make a call. It took me some time to work of the nerve to call to begin with. So I finally call and the little a-hole call taker goes on to tell me that Dr So-and-so isn’t taking on any new patients. I then ask if he could recommend anyone else i could reach out to…. he could not. I hung up and that was my experience with EAP. An effing joke like everything else on this job.
Blaming exempts and supervisor for “death by suicide” is as DUMB as saying a gun killed someone! Most suicides happen after a breakup & DRINKING or divorcing & DRINKING. We have to take care of ourselves & take responsibility for ourselves and each other! We are our brother’s keepers. Stay safe
That comes directly from Chief of patrol. The way he speaks to supervisors is a direct result to how they speak to their subordinates. If you lead by fear then that’s what will be projected down.
All of the functions and units you mentioned are not part of the police department. They are part of OPSA.
yes, the job wasn’t the cause of this. CAPS with 2 years on the job, working straight days with Sunday-Monday day off and when days are cancelled it’s not to push a beat car. The stresses of work were not the cause of this, but the lack of asking for help when struggling with outside pressure.
Thank you!
This. All this ragging on the department. The have the most resources in it’s history available , every out you can manage to simply “take time “. This had. NOTHING to do with the job and everything to do with personal choices unrelated to duty and department, just like over 67% of officer suicides . It decisions in their persons life . Blaming the department for poor life choices people don’t want to face is mind numbing. The rhetoric is exhausting. The simple fact of matter is people don’t want to face their bad decisions and have the the means to copout .
Also dismal the sham they call IAD, now called BIA. I’ve reported a boss for wrong doing and they did everything unethical to help him they could. A bunch of cowards.
Help is out there
11 years on the job
With our insurance I go see a retired CPD Sgt who’s now a mental health professional. The man saved my life . Thank you Tim M God Bless all that you do in your retirement
I’ve sent countless co workers to see him.
Never touched EAP to worried incident be trusted so I went and found my own help
Sounds like a CPD management propaganda response.
Well said. Agree.
Thank you! It seems hard to work some days. Some times it feels like I’m all alone and no one understands.
It doesn’t feel like it at times. Life feels like a grind.
Shit rolls down hill. Excuse my French.
Another sadness and loss. My heart felt condolences to her friends and family. The pain and loss will always be there and never completely go away. I lost my child to suicide. Five years ago but seems like yesterday. I blame myself for putting in all the hours working. I just wish I could have been there for him. I didn’t see it coming. I know how it feels to have to carry on. I’m with you.
There are no leaders in that building. Just jagoffs holding overtime over officer’s heads.
Agree.
To the Officer, her sisters and brothers at work, family members and friends, we pray for the Lord's peace to be with each of them.
I did and it went no where. All tucked away under the rug by IAD. I was hated by the Lt’s for reporting a Lt. I’m just a PO. I know a female officer who reported a Sgt for wanting to date her and it got out of hand. Nothing happened. The department looks the other way.
Management feels they have to read something. It’s not genuine. Not from the heart. They caused us to feel like shit.
That’s why they get paid the big bucks…………. If you can’t handle the heat get out of the oven.
Totally agree. The supervisors should have cleaned up. But they always think they are two good for that. When the Deputy Cheif at Homan Square killed him self in his office they had the low paid janitor clean up the mess. But every Gold Star in the command chain came to look at it to make sure it was Suicide. Current bosses are useless. They don’t know how to lead. A real Boss would be more thoughtful and considerate to the people at the bottom always doing the dirty work.
“Back in the day” there were also more than a few “gun cleaning accidents” as well. Det’s knew that the family didn’t get any benefits on a suicide, so things might have been… “reclassified” as an accident.
It happened 20, 30, 40 years ago and it’s happening today. Cops kill themselves at a higher rate than almost any other profession.
There’s nothing worth taking your life.
Divorce, gambling problems, family problems, addiction, loosing your job,
Hell, get a good lawyer, stop gambling/drinking/drugs- there’s more than enough programs out there available, work through the family matters, get a different job…
It may be hard or tough FOR A LITTLE WHILE, but there’s a ton of people who made it through!
Nothing out there is worth taking your life over!
As someone who was once on the edge I can say I understand me and my situation and why I was where I was, no one else knows. Even now when I think about why I myself think wtf was I thinking, how did I get so close to ending it all? Looking back it was serious but nothing I obviously didn’t overcome, but at the time I was so broken and unable see another way. I had people that cared, people that knew me but I put on a happy face although inside I was tragically deeply hurting. I planned it all, I left a letter to say goodbye. I’m so happy and God only knows how I got thru it but I did. My life is great and I cry with tears of joy every time I think what I came so close to doing. No one should feel guilty or blame anyone else, only that person knew why. All anyone can do is surround each other with love, friendship and create an atmosphere of trust. God bless all of you.
Forensics falls under the Bureau of Investigative Services Chief Ursitti.
Everyday I pray for the safety of EVERY member of CPD. Don’t think for one minute that you guys aren’t loved, respected and appreciated. You are, please look out for each other.
86-7
You can’t be serious? Give accountability back to the BIA? No thank you. The unit has no credibility.
Who’s in charge of Forensics?
That came from a useless sergeant.
Thank you very much for this!
Who forged your transcripts to get on the job chief, do me a favor take deep look in the mirror and fuk ur own face.
Don’t trust this department. The EAP, BIA, Officer Support Unit, Legal Affairs are all in it together. Go over to Indiana if you need to talk to someone. Director SOBO from the EAP talks to the Superintendent and other command members regularly. Officers have visited the EAP and returned to work to find that all of the beans were spilled.
The upper management is the stress.
Working in CAPS brings on a different level of stress within itself. CAPS officers are often threatened and concerned about being dumped and command changes. CAPS officers have to appease their commander/local politicians /clergy/volunteers/ school personnel or else.
What are they yelling about? Incompetent yelling at incompetent about his incompetence? Or Incompetent telling competent to stop being incompetent?
There are other outlets outside of the Chicago Police Department that provide assistance.
Agreed. At this point, I just show up.
Conehead, Snelling or the Fop shouldn’t be allowed to attend officers’ funerals.
Dude it’s their job to clean up the mess. Next you’ll say the building should be torn down so the memory is no longer available to coworkers.
I don’t want nice,,I want men amoung men leaders that drive American cars, happily married with kids, high credit scores, former military, physically fit, and out with the troops at 3:30am on high risk felony stops.
That’s a leader.
Mandatory stress management class is the problem….we already have it. A po with a man bun and yoga pants telling me how to live my life is a joke. A person with tat sleeves telling me how to live life is also a joke. No one is having a great life and doing things right and the says…..I’m going to tat up my body and get a nose or tongue piercing.
Lord, this is beyond disturbing if true. The in house custodian(same custodian the officer knew and probably greeted each day) was ordered to mop up her scene?
Let’s learn from this incident and not let it happen again.
Same here…been talking with a family therapist for years..one hour a month, on the phone, for the price of a lunch, to cover what insurance doesn’t..never heard a peep from the insurance company, city, or dept.
Sounds like you wear dress diapers. You don’t even know what The fish were, that was your grandpa.
Biggest b*tch boy out there who wants to pretend to be Army strong. He's a weak token SUP., anyone who supports him or believes he cares about you are so stupid. Unlike Brown, he hides it better.
I'm disheartened to know another officer took their life and couldn't bare the pain they were carrying. I hope God takes them into their kingdom, RIP.
As for the department, city, management, mayor, SUP and every other POS in this department, you guys are a piece of s*** who don't care about officers so stop pretending, I will be doing nothing as usual.
Called asking for aa meeting they said check the wire
Wow, that’s fucked up if true. Anyone who goes for the 1 day wellness check in make sure you let them how fucked up CPD management is. Let them share that.
Wow, so you knew what was going on in the building and chose to enter into a door that is not intended to enter. You had to purposely walk past the side entrance of the parking lot to enter the alley and walk in. It’s the bosses fault you had to see that? Come on, I get that you want to place blame on supervisors but take a look in the mirror.
You'll be waiting a long time...
