But to see the command staff behave in this manner as they prepare for a press conference about an officer who has been shot and killed is downright disgraceful.

Most officers are crying, distraught, upset and the people running the CPD are having a good time. Show some respect a woman has lost her life and we are all hurting. Everyone goes out and realizes it could be them. The people running the place lost touch on what it’s like to be working. Awful. :(

Got no problem with it. Not that the exempt care about field units at all, we’re just employee numbers to them but we constantly crack jokes on all type of scenes, including OIS. I doubt they were mocking Krystal, probably catching up on something or laughing at a joke someone said. No harm here.

As a retired Cop and being directly accused of being insensitive at a murder crime scene of a young innocent teen by the deceased family, I personally know sometimes we try hard to find laughter to keep from breaking down. The family had no clue that I was breaking inside and only was looking for strength to stand at the crime scene… For some people laughing and smiling is a coping mechanism. I’m thankful that my Sergeant knew that I was only trying to cope and explained it and apologized to the family. However, I agree CPD must give mandatory awareness training concerning laughing at such tragedies 💔💙🖤🕊️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🕊️🕊️🕊️

I have always found that most of the exempts just do not respect the line officers and treat them with disdain, and that goes back for decades. They talk down to the officers to include sergeants and lieutenants. They think they are above it all even though they got their positions with influence, not competence. And, the worst part of it all, they actually think they deserve their rank and they " earned it".

At various scenes over the course of my career, I’ve talked to people. Joked. Smiled, I’m sure. While just steps or feet away, there was tragedy.

But these exempts were lined up for a press conference. Knowing that they were on camera. Or soon to be on camera. And still couldn’t figure out this wasn’t the time for smiling and joking.

This is only partly true. Quite a few of the people who made a career out of court time are not necessary for the case. They just liked to tell the ASA to notify them for everything and they sat there and accumulated OT never having to do any of the work or testifying. At least that’s the way it used to be. I’ve been retired for just a bit but the jury rooms used to be jammed with people who just sat there and jawjacked and read the sports pages.
Every exempt is a politician who sold their soul for a gold star. Lightfoot and Brown berated you like clowns and punks and you sat there and took it. You’re a bunch of cowards and punks. All you care about is your inflated pensions. In Vietnam you would have been fragged by your own troops. Good riddance. Three more months and I retire.

Worked Police shootings never saw anyone laughing and trust me exempts were no better when I came on in the 80' they mostly acted like citizens at crime scenes. Every person above a testable rank on CPD & CFD are sponsored either by politics, debt, lineage or friendship and a few have been good police officers and administrators but nobody gets those promotions on their own.

I hate to say this, but there are those who are commenting that all the exempts in this video displayed so much disrespect for the fallen Officer. Just like when the public condemns the actions of the Police by watching a video, and while not seeing the whole context rush to judgement. I will be the first to admit the most of these exempts displayed the utmost disrespect for the fallen Officer except for the two exempts on the far right of the video. Watch it again and you will see the tall exempt is emotional troubled by this officers death. He is not laughing but at the point of revealing his emotions. The other exempt in the glasses, knows this is a somber occasion and it is displayed in his body language. Their body language suggests that they personally knew the fallen Officer.
Leadership is not define as authority given to you, but having the moral fortitude to do what is right for those under your command. This principle is what guided me as a supervisor in 020 until I retired over a decade ago.

Been around Chicago over 70 years and no one should be surprised by the incompetence in the City of Chicago Supervisory hierarchy.
