So basically, when OâMalley came to the department, she interviewed on the notion that she was all for fighting for âcivil rightsâ, more police accountability and breaking the code of silence within the department. Her political connections and dadâs coattail are the reasons that law students/ attorneys on the job, and many others kiss her a-s.

I like the horses myself but itâs time to get with the times. Get rid of that unit. Sell the horses to a reputable company or farmers. Put those officers and supervisors back in districts where they are needed more. Itâs time to make major changes due to budget issues and manpower issues.

What if I suggested that both those ideas were wrong? What if it is just as simple as: the mounted unit is a positive display of law enforcement? I know I will get booed for this opinion, but every kid and most adults see an officer on a horse and it is generally a positive image of law enforcement. They do parades, they do ceremonies, and yes they do actual police work - but that's not what the public associates with them. So what I'm saying is - maybe he would be getting rid of them simply because they are a positive image and his entire schtick is "police=bad".

1988. Last nazi rally in Marquette Park. Put out on foot at 71st and Sacramento for the barricades north into the park. Traffic honking, cheers and boos coming from the treeline on my north. Large group of bikers going west, they look at all the saw horses, I smile and shake my head no. They go a little more west, then suddenly, as a group, they go over the curb north onto the east end of the soccer field. They dismount, open saddle bags or whatnot, and begin to throw good size rocks, trying to get them over the tree line! I put it on my radio, not being able to know if I was heard, while a line of mounted police with helmeted riders comes south, single file, out of the treeline, at least a dozen horses.Now stretching south along the west end of the soccer field as their Sgt. gives an bullhorn order of " left echelon turn !". The mounted police all turn east at the same time, the horses stop, now all individually facing the bikers. Wow!!! While the Sgt gets his bullhorn, some horses winny, some paw the ground and a couple snort.
The Sgt orders the bikers off the field and out of the park, his orders met by what you would expect from the bikers. The Sgt speaks to his left and right and the face shields come down. He then orders "draw batons" and the longer riot sticks (30" ?) are now in the freehand of the riders. On the next order they move slowly east toward the bikers, who are silent, pensive and seemingly amazed. What ever the next order was the horses went into a "trot", and it was at this point you had biker mayhem as they mounted their Harleys and quickly exited eastbound on 71st.. Couldn't talk to horse guys as they went pack for more from where they came from. But one of the drunks from across the street was desperate to tell me his joke. "If I had known dis was gonna happen, I would a put something down on this race!!"

I explained I applied for some new unit and they wanted to talk to me. He asked who's my guy. I replied, "You?" He laughed and said it will be a good experience for me.
