Four alderpersons voted against a resolution offering Black Chicagoans an apology for America’s enslavement of their ancestors, producing a racially charged clash within the City Council and a final roll call that one supporter called “appalling.”
Alds. Raymond Lopez (15th), Nick Sposato (38th), Anthony Napolitano (41st) and James Gardiner (45th) sparked outrage from some of their colleagues for refusing to endorse the resolution, which ultimately passed.
The measure sponsored by 4th Ward Ald. Lamont Robinson issued a formal apology from the City Council “to the Black citizens of Chicago for the historical injustices of slavery, segregation, systemic racism and the policies that have perpetuated racial inequality.”
It overwhelmingly passed 43-4, but not without fireworks at a marathon Council meeting Thursday.
Fireworks over what? Performative, generated outrage?
- no one alive today was ever a slave (with the tiny exception of those in assorted islamic shitholes);
- no one alive today ever owned a slave (again, with the previously noted exceptions);
- Illinois contributed mightily to the Union side in the Civil War to the cost of tens of thousands of lives;
- Illinois was a destination point for the underground railroad, freeing thousands of slaves;
Can people feel bad about it? We guess, but at that point in history, our entire ancestry was busy in Crimea, the Second Schleswig War, the Austro-Prussian War and the Franco-Prussian War before the survivors wised up, packed it in and headed west to the New World. They didn't own any slaves, participated in no slave-holding and escaped what was essentially a slavery of endless war.
Apologies like the one in the City Council inevitably lead to demands for compensation, which is a complete non-starter. Besides, isn't Chicago trying to fill a budget gap? Couple hundred millions dollars worth? Did the dumbass alder-idiots make any progress on that front?

The call for reparations really pisses me off. 360,000 Union troops died in the Civil War. Those are soldiers who had nothing to do with slavery except trying to end it. And their ancestors owe reparations? Ungrateful is understating it.

At Fredericksburg battlefield, many, many slaves died. Irish slaves. Indentured servants who were forced into the military the second they landed in this country. 12,000 died at Fredericksburg in about 3 days. In the museum, all the battle flags from both sides were covered in Irish symbology. There are so many graves that they cut them into a massive hill. 80% of those graves were Irishmen who died before they had secured their own freedom.

My great grandfather was only 16 when he answered the call to arms and lied about his age to be accepted. In the course of the war he was severely wound. Two of my great uncles were killed in an action and another was seriously wounded as well. Screw reparations. My family has already paid enough, and in the most direct way possible.

Last week at HQ was like the hunger games when it comes to these budget cuts and infighting among the chiefs. So far these are some measures they want to take to boost manpower and save some money since hiring will be slowed as will promotions. Mounted unit very well will be gone. K9s will be lowered by attrition, since it’s testable, you can’t get rid of them, but promotions and retirements will not be filled. Existing handlers on the streets will fill any vacancies for bomb dogs in the future at the airports. Street K9 handlers will eventually be phased out. Tac teams will only have 3 teams of 1 Sgt and 8 officers for each, no more 10 teams and no more extra 06, 64 or 65 teams etc. only 4 DCO officers per district who will report to the caps Sgt. No more DCO sgt. No more SDSC sgt, the watch commander on the watches will handle those personnel. CIRT won’t change, narcotics to lose 2 Sgts and 16 POs and gang investigations to lose 1 Sgt and 10 POs. Vice to be depleted to almost nothing. Intel will be reduced to 2 task force teams and that’s it. CAS team to lose officers back to patrol. No more abandoned building officers, any complaints will go from caps direct to TBU who will address any building troubles. Vehicle budget to be slashed by 25 percent. Tact vehicles that won’t be used now because of the cuts in personnel will go to any other unmarked needs like BCT or the detective division. Only marked cars to be purchased in 2026 except for exempt vehicles. Overtime will be gutted. Overtime budget getting cit from 100 million to 60 million which is only 5 million per month for the entire department. Normally, we are 16-22 million per month as a department. Court section will have no more full duty officers, it will all be covered by light duty POs and Sgts. HQ is trying to find 40 officers to take out of HQ back to the districts that can be filled by light duty or callback personnel. Academy has to find 30-40 officers to send back to districts. Robbery and carjacking task forces are losing 1 team each and the detective division has to find 20 POs who are NOT detectives to go back to patrol. Detective admin spots will be filled by light duty people if available. There will be a major shuffle of light duty and callback officers coming to fill full duty admin spots including in the districts as watch secretaries and SDSC spots. Even with all those cuts they are talking about, we’re still doomed.

Was shown a movie during forced diversity training at my department back in the day that highlighted what happened to the Irish, Chinese and Italian immigrants who came America in the late 1800 and into the 19 hundreds. Life was exceptionally cruel and hard for the immigrants. They suffered hunger, poverty, and were treated as slave labor. They were constantly being cheated by the bosses, politicians and land owners. But you know what? Most were able to overcome those obstacles and become productive and important members of society. This history is rarely taught in schools because it doesn’t fit the narrative
