Questionable Chase
A Cook County judge is again, releasing violent dangerous criminals back onto the streets:
- Two men in a stolen car who led police on a 20-mile long chase that ended in a crash after fleeing the burglary of a father and son’s work van in Lake View have now been accused in three more burglaries.
Wait, what?
A twenty-mile chase? Are you f#$%ing kidding us?
Evidently not, because here's some video coverage:
The reporter in the helicopter says the vehicle was observed:
- flying through red lights,
- blowing by stop signs,
- being involved in at least one traffic accident,
- going the wrong way on Lake Shore Drive,
- driving on a sidewalk,
- exceeding 100 MPH
Each and every one of these actions is grounds for termination of the pursuit - BY GENERAL ORDER!
Failure to follow said General Order, is (and has been) grounds for extensive suspensions, up to and including Thirty Pending Separation. Not to mention recent monetary judgements against the City and PUNITIVE DAMAGES assessed against Officers.
Society demanded these new rules and has been enforcing them with jury verdicts. We don't like them, we've never liked them, we don't support them in any way at all....but it's the reality we served under and currently live under. No idea who in the chain of command dropped the ball here, but they need some extensive retraining.
(UPDATE) A comment from a day ago asked who's liable if the criminals think the NBC chopper is actually the Police helicopter and, while fleeing the "pursuit," wrecks and kills someone? We wonder.

The reporter said the pursuit lasted 40 or 50 minutes, involved speeds of 100 mph through residential areas, in the middle of the day? All this when everyone is out Christmas shopping and no sergeants or lieutenants ordered this pursuit to be terminated?!? It is for the grace of God no one was killed. Meawhile, you can bet a lot of people are taking suspension time for violating the vehicle pursuit order. SMH.

I personally know officers who took anywhere from 6 to 24 month suspension for pursuits. What are officers to do when some asshole decides s/he has nothing to lose and mows down families/ children at a baseball game…?
We are prohibited from boxing the shithead’s vehicle in. Cannot discharge a firearm into the offender’s moving vehicle. Yelling “Stop Sir!” ten times over might not be effective. We’re literally screwed if we attempt to use any of the above listed force options. CPD is so restricted that it’s just better to wait till asshole is done mowing people down, his gas runs out, or asshole has a change of heart. Call for County or ISP and can swing by and put 5000 rounds into shithead’s vehicle because they are allowed to. CPD= Clerks with guns.
Does anyone in this hell hole who is in a position of authority have even a sliver of sanity left in their head. If these two criminal masterminds don't qualify as a danger to the community then I don't know who does.

Who is the judge?
Well I’d like to know what was so pressing that the 12th district necessary to drive north in the south bound lane at a high rate of speed tge other night. They flew past me on Ashland near the Costco.
So the officer chased this car all over for what? Burglary to auto? How much did they get from the car? If they even got $100, is that worth it? If someone died from this, everyone involved is screwed. Not like a little screwed, like big time screwed.
Knowing that the city will wash their hands of you and you’ll be stuck holding the bag, why in the world would anyone risk everything to chase for anything.
Sorry, I will never chase a car again. The city has made it crystal clear. If anything goes wrong you will be F@CKED! How are some people still not getting that message?
I will terminate every chase. If a captain or commander wants to come over the air and let it continue, they have the authority to do that and then they accept all responsibility for the outcome. Put it on them.
Remember these rulings when working. It isn’t worth getting killed or permanently hurt.
Right in the order it states the department can not discipline you for not chasing. They can’t under any circumstances. So why are people still chasing like this? Especially if no copper was shot or injured. Honestly, you really need your head examined if you’re still even thinking about chasing these days.

At the end of the day its up to those coppers, if they wanna jump in on it that's their decision. I doubt PH1 wants officers to chase anything they're just giving out the locations like you said. Anyway, the news is full of shit, after that car crashes in the video the dudes run for awhile before you see a single copper. The only chasing going on was from the reporters trying to hype up their story.

As far as a news helicopter being libel for any damages if a chase ends up with tragic results is an interesting legal question. Does a reporter or passive witness to a crime have a duty to retreat?

Hey 2 year wonder .. ph1 is calling out their location to have cops know where to go when they bail ... not so they can continue chasing behind them.
But when ever have we been allowed to chase for a property crime? Asking for the dozens of POs who have been suspended, stripped and put in the penalty box in the past for chasing for way more serious and justifiable crimes than this.
Anyone that took time in the past for chasing a car should file beefs if everyone of those involved in this chase dont receive a punishment equal to what they received.

A story circa 1970's: Copper on midnight patrol hears this loud continual banging noise. He goes dark and creeps around. Noise leads to a K-mart type parking lot where another copper has a chain wrapped around a parking lot light and attached to the squad, where he's trying to pull a dent out of the front bumper.

The job came out as a robbery just occurred. It was called off in 007. Proceeded to 008 where they eventually crashed (and you can see from Channel 5 footage, not pursued). It took a bit for police to arrive on scene to look for assholes who bailed.
