Let the troops know that the CTA special ain’t what it used to be. Had the 0500 start today and boy was it an absolute disaster. You have a take home car? Not using it. You brought a car? Not using it. They are dropping you off in vans to your posts. You’re on a fixed post and high visibility the entire tour until your uber van picks you up and drops you off. They are being heavy on the spars for not being on post. My sergeant was actually watching us on pods today to make sure we were on the platform.
You might get lucky and get the subway but if not you’re out in the cold, on a platform fully exposed to the elements. Full stop. Anyone that’s got special next coming weeks, bundle up heavy. I am not exaggerating. Oh you also can’t pick your assignments or your partners.
As for lunch, you are eating in the area of your post. And if you want, you can take the CTA to your lunch destination but don’t go “too far”.
Um, have you seen how "safe" the CTA is lately? How many physical attacks are occurring? Robberies? People getting pushed onto the tracks? Maybe someone being set on fire?
High visibility is kind of the driving force behind it all. And sergeants are supposed to make sure you're where you're supposed to be.

The plan also adds dozens of private canine security guards to rail stations and trains, along with additional personnel from a handful of suburban police departments that have similar arrangements.
This could actually be an opportunity to slap Conehead around if everyone DIDN'T volunteer for CTA Special Employment. It's technically NOT a job action, since it's 100% voluntary and you aren't paid by the CPD - you're paid by the CTA and you gain Social Security credits, so it protected from the penalties that might be assessed in the face of an actual job action.

Inside the actual train cars is where the majority of the issues are.
The people who will talk the most shit don’t ride the train regularly, and they don’t work CTA special.
These train cars are rolling homeless shelters and psych wards. Locking up some piss bum for he’s 65th arrest isn’t going to fix this. And neither is going from 75 coppers a day to 120 coppers a day.
Not signing up would be great, except it’s not realistic.
The problem has been allowed to become so systemic and large that an extra 30 cops a day aren’t gonna be able to fix it, no matter where they stand.
If they magically found money to go from 77 officers per day to 120 at the drop a hat, that leads me to believe that the budget has always been there for 120 officers per day.
So the question is- where has that money been diverted to this whole time?

The beginning rant post is everything that’s wrong with this job. Not saying I never enjoyed something that was a bit easier than expected but never once when I volunteered to sign up for OT did I expect it to be easy. If I was unhappy, then guess what- I didn’t sign up again. There was a time on CTA you were expected to have 21 rides on a 1st watch tour - that’s fun on 63rd street buses. One time I got put with a guy whose assignment was Mass Transit. They wanted us visible on the Red Line. He absolutely refused once we left roll call and had us riding the Brown all night- all I worried about was getting called out and not being able to get CTA any longer. Parks is another. Had some dog who didn’t even take a radio. Pulled next to me and put her seat back to sleep the tour. She’s getting $75 an Hour and I’m supposed to baby sit her? I moved across the park, she woke up, saw I wasn’t there and pulled next to me to sleep again. I called the special unit the next day and said, “Don’t ever put me with her again.” and if they did- I cancelled. Stop expecting this job to be easy when you volunteer. Fkin entitled dog asses.
Poor baby, you have to actually work, no hiding in the hole, no sitting down to a nice lunch spot. There will be plenty of prople that will sign up. As long as there are people buying cars they have no business buying.

Give the passengers what they need so they will able to ride to work in peace and not in pieces. Ballistic vests, clubs, guns to ward off the robbers. Ladders and ropes to climb back up after being pushed onto the tracks. Spray soap to ward off the homeless. And CFD firefighters assigned to every train to put out fires.
I remember back in the day there were alot of older guys working CTA special specifically to help pay for there kids college education. This is a younger department now who values their personal time so we shall see.

I used public transportation in NY from LaGuardia to Times Square to our hotel. Used subways from Times Square to other parts of the city. What I can tell you is the police presence in NYC transit is everywhere. At the turnstiles. On the platforms. On the trains. Walking around. At the bus depots.
This poster gets paid $90 an hour or more at CPD to work VOLUNTARY EMPLOYMENT for CTA and complains he can’t use his take home car and run errands then sit in his car the rest of the day.

Worked in Mass Transit for a long time, finished my career at the blue line at O'hare. Great gig, every once in awhile we'd have to lock up Mookie the Stew Bum or a mental but never a big deal. There was an awesome janitor who cleaned the trains from 4am-12pm . She would buy her own Lysol and spray the sleeping stink piles. Until a do-gooder complained about the atrocity and she was sadly fired. She would scream that the stink was an attack on her senses and needed to be erased. CTS bring her back!

You are right, absolutely right. Life is about choices. They are offering people a sum of money to preform a task. You don’t want to do the job, don’t do it. In this case people are being told to be scarecrows, stand a fixed post and play pocket pool, in exchange for more money than they can make anywhere else. What you do with the money is your business.
What seems to be missed here is that the CPD seems unable to come up with a strategy that actually might do something to make the system safe. I don’t know, how about enforcing quality of life crimes on the trains? Undercover officers riding the trains? The problem is of course, that active enforcement will result in arresting too many of the wrong people.

What did you expect, fixed post sanding outside in the cold. Take it from someone who worked the Mass Transit Unit back in the day: find an employee and have the employee make a copy of a key that opens the door to the employee booth that is on the platform. These small booths usually have space heaters in them. This way you solve your problem. You are visible on the platform and out of the cold. Worked Mass Transit for several years and did this. What can your supervisor say. It's worth it to give an employee a " TIP" for a key. But again, it does get cold in Chicago !!!!!!!!

Don't get me wrong I understand the nature of the job today is to protect your career, and you do that by not engaging the elements. It's difficult to go to "work" hoping you don't get into a sh*tstorm. Never be complacent but that also means knowing policy and the law so that if the sh*tstorm does come to you, you know how to do what you need to do so that you go home to your loved ones safely and legally.
Speaking of Special Enjoyment… what’s going on with the mass grievances for unfair suspensions from the program which went to arbitration? I remember FOP fast tracked it because so many unclouted people got fucked while those with phone calls got taken care of. We were told it was a slam dunk after the arbitrator heard testimony from Alison Johnson and a couple sergeants from VSWO. I’m guessing no decision yet? Updates anyone? Hello FOP, what’s the scoop?
As far as working ANY special over the years? I worked whenever and whatever I wanted. It’s the reason my 15 year mortgage was paid in 11 years, why I’ve had a summer place for 20+ years, why my kids went to private schools, why Ive always had nice cars and toys and why my Def Comp is 7 figures and we have several other investments. If you’re not smart enough to minimize the likelihood of something going south while working special, you shouldn’t be on this job. I absolutely refuse to give them anything north of the minimum when working my days off. Work smart, not hard.
I’ll never forget what the old timers told me when I came on… “treat this job like a whore, kid”. And that I have. It becomes second nature when you realize the deck is stacked against you unless you have clout, the proper blood lines or mad fellatio skills. The lawsuit was won by the SGTs who filed it, the FOP had nothing to do with it. The city owes those that worked it about 3-4 dollars for every hour worked. The city has to pay 5% interest on what is owed. That's all I know.

I think the issue is that the conditions are deplorable… piss, shit, bacteria, bums, schizophrenics, freezing weather and on your feet for 8 hrs (not walking, but standing)…. From what I remember when I did it, they’d often burn thru the budget at the beginning of the year and then had to start making cuts to the OT manpower towards the end of the year. It’ll be the same. They’ll give the illusion to get the federal money and then once the fall hits - you’ll see them going to lower numbers.
