D.C. CompStat Exposed
NYPD had upper level exempts write a couple books on how CompStat manipulated numbers for years.
We wrote tens of dozens of articles about CompStat being crooked with the able assistance of insiders, alternative media sources like HeyJackass.com and CWB blog and may have inspired a few media reports here and there.
Now, the US Attorney in DC has reported to Congress that :::gasp!!!::: DC police have been lying for years about their numbers:
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said Monday that a months-long federal investigation uncovered widespread misclassification of crime reports by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), making crime statistics across Washington, D.C. "artificially lower."
Pirro said the findings were based on a review of nearly 6,000 reports and interviews with more than 50 witnesses, showing that D.C.’s crime numbers were significantly understated.
"It is evident that a significant number of reports had been misclassified, making crime appear artificially lower than it was," Pirro said in a statement.
Hell, we even wrote two days ago about Conehead and others claim crime is down....if you don't count all the stolen vehicles.
What are the three types of lies?
- Lies
- Damn Lies
- Statistics
A fourth type should be "Compstat."

Gotta love Judge Jeanine. She said she would look into it and she did. Think we can get her here once D.C. gig is over? Conehead would take out a year lease at Northwestern psych.
And after all this, our department still uses compstat. Every Wednesday this charade still goes on. Numbers still get pushed. commanders, captains and Lts still get called out based on their numbers. When does this ever end?
Same thing goes on here. One big shit show of smiles and pretend everything is going good. Incompetence is the new normal.

I've written for years about Lies, Damned Lies, Statistics and then there're Criminal Justice Statistics.
Back in the late '80s, David Simon wrote, in his "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets", and I'm going to paraphrase because I cannot find the quote, ADWs become simple Assault, Robberies become Burgalries become Larcenies, that's how Patrolmen become Corporals, Corprals become Sergeants, Sergeants become Lieutenants, Lieutenants become Captains, etc.
Why would this surprise anyone?
Compstat should never be in place in any police department. We aren't a factory putting widgets together for numbers. The whole thing is a bullshit idea for numbers.
FYI...both the Chicago Tribune and Sun Times were sent that, but both will continue to repeat the same "crime is down" lie spoon fed to them by the 5th floor via CPD.

I always said the way to do a compstat type thing would be to have the supt and maybe some chiefs if needed come out to the district and have a pow wow with them at the district level. If you’ve ever been called up to the podium, you know how nerve racking it can be with a room of 200 people looking and listening to how u respond to these gotcha type questions. It’s total bullshit and you don’t get any real info out of them. If everyone (meaning about 10 -15) people were sitting around a table then u could actually get a good discussion going and feel of what’s really going on and what’s really needed by the districts. I can not fathom how this compstat in the same format still continues to this day. It’s almost as if the brass get off on seeing other people up at the podium squirming. It’s not helpful in any way at all and should’ve been gone with McCarthy.

I was a District Sector Sergeant for approximately 8 years in the 008th District. In those 8 years, the highest-ranking officer to come into the District was Area Deputy Chief John Corliss. He came to the District to threaten to transfer every Sergeant on the watch because the Officers on this particular watch were engaged in a traffic ticket writing slowdown. In those 8 years several Police Officers were shot. At no time did he or any other high-ranking Officer come to the District and ask how the men and woman were doing. At no time did any high-ranking Officer offer any type of services to the watch Officers who had worked with the injured Officers. I think that if the Area Deputy Chiefs would come to the Districts and sat with the Officers it would a benefit to the department. Compstat sucks. What that old saying; Figures don't lie, but liars' figure. By the way: the ticket slowdown lasted for about a week, and nobody got transferred.
CompStat was such bullshit, it got spoofed on The Wire years and years ago... So of course The Brain Trust(tm) running Chiraq decided to adopt it... /sarc
Seriously, anyone misclassifying things to manipulate numbers needs to be charged with sedition and incur the appropriate penalty.
Don't forget that bosses are pushing for productivity such as arrests, citations, TSSS cards, and guns. They treat police activity like sales numbers.
Solving what? Which Lettuce Entertain You restaurant to go to for 1/2 price?
It's a circus of course! But where else would the clowns perform if not at Compstat?
Chicago stats are even more challenging because here we have victims who lie....
At the beginning of the month after husband cashes his SS check, disability check, veteran check, he goes on a binge of smoking crack, hiring chores, and booking with friends. Husband comes home and tells her he was robbed and that's why there's no money left. Then they make a robbery report. So many robberies are at the beginning of the month. They can be hard to distinguish from the real victims.
