This Department is broken. We have a culture of skirting the rules and anytime a supervisor steps up to say something they are the bad guys. Throughout the districts and units you see the older officers not caring and passing down knowledge and the younger officers doing whatever they like. If you tell them to wear uniform correctly or follow the policies you are the bad guy. What makes this worse is that supervisors are trying so hard to be the "cool boss". Sergeants and Lieutenants alike are afraid to address the officers out of fear of making the blog. This blog is also part of the problem, instead of highlighting positivity and leveraging your platform for good, you would rather air out dirty laundry for views and likes. Officers will make mistakes and its during this time the senior officers and supervisors should coach and guide them.
Instead they never let them live down a bad decision. You think that helps with morale and mental help. Wake up Officers this is still a noble and honorable profession. Also stop letting the trolls diminish your work and down play what contributions

Understand that the crown cap is a traditional component of not only the CPD uniform, but also other PDs around the world.
Tradition is important most of us on this job and most of them are already being whittled away. Lets keep as much of our positive Chicago Police Dept identity as we can. As a 6 year old kid, seeing Officer Friendly when he came to my school was so cool to me, but that crown cap was part of why I became a Police Officer many years later.

How is a cap unprofessional. Officers are in the streets. It helps with the sun which helps increase visibility while reducing cancer from the sun. It also helps regulate head temperature in the summer keeping officers cooler. We don’t work in an office. Anybody who says a cap is unprofessional clearly is a house mouse.

We had a stroke LT who made us do stand-up inspection 3 times a week. So one day I wore a English bobby police hat. It got quite a laugh and he knocked inspections down to once a week. Also remember about 25 years ago a guy wore clown shoes for inspection.

The Crown cap is a Cpd tradition. The newbie soy boys on the job have no respect for stuff like this. The crown cap should be retained, but required only for formal events, and optional for every day street patrol assignments. The current shield from the crown cap should be replaced with a modified shield with no star number just like the lieutenants and sergeants hat shield. That can be done at no cost to the city by making the modified shield optional.

The stops were good legit proactive police work with good PC. What got them progressive discipline was the absolute LACK of documentation - nothing, zero, nada. On most stops, the Sgt was on scene participating BUT failed his team in making sure they did paperwork. Hein thought he could hide him in OCD but stripped the PO. If you make the stop, do the paper. 004 and 022 are having similar issues that needs to be addressed ASAP.

He does not have the ability to select bosses who fit the leadership role, meaning he has poor judgment of character. He allows key positions to go unfulfilled for long periods of time is troubling, this tells me he doesn’t know the people who work for his department. Here’s a piece of advice Larry, you need to work on the morale of the department first before you worry how your troops look. Once you turn the tide of morale then you can change how we look. Yes, our appearance is important but morale is more important. You talk a good game, now shows us what you preach or just shut up! Use your bully pulpit to the best of your advantage. A true leader is willing to fall on the sword for the betterment of his troops. And, for the record the baseball hat was stupid looking , poorly designed.
