Damn! I'm heartbroken for his family. I've known Will his entire career. We came on the job together, 96-2. Spent many years working together in 014. This one hit's close to home. I was looking forward to reconnecting at his retirement party, not his funeral! Tomorrow is never promised, it's a gift! RIP my friend!

Say what you want but anyone on this job at that age needs their heads examined. Do your time, retire and hopefully collect as many pension checks as humanly possible. Nothing and I mean nothing is worth the stress of this job. Don't care if you're a PO or a Chief. Retire and begin to sleep, eat and live a more "normal" life. We had our differences but the man was a decent person. Just don't know why he chose to stay on this job longer than necessary. Forget the promotions or hope of a better spot. Retire already and enjoy what time we all have left. Prayers for the Betancourt family during this difficult time.

Everyone always talks about the stress of the job for those of us on the street. But the stress for a boss has to be just as bad or even worse. Especially when the chief of patrol is a major asshole and treats everyone like shit. RIP Boss and may G_d bless your family during these hard times.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news. I didn't know him on a personal level but he was always one of the few bosses that would stop and say hello and actually talk to you. I had a really nice half hour conversation with him when we both attended a training class at the academy earlier last year. We just talked about this job, life and officers we both knew. He was down to earth. God bless him and his family as they deal with their heartbreak.

Why wait until 55 to retire?
When it’s your turn, hope they do the same for you, to benefit your loved ones left behind.
Got to be honest, I don’t think I ever heard a single good word about him. With that being said, you never wish for someone on this job to die. He worked for decades in hopes of being able to enjoy retirement, just like the rest of us, and he was never able to enjoy even a second. And that’s sad. No matter what you think of him, say a prayer, take a second of silence, think of his family. There’s far more to life than this job. I’ve known some real fucking jagoffs on this job, and sometimes I’ve met them outside of work, and they were delightful wonderful human beings to be around. This job turns some people into real miserable humans. I fight it some days too. Just remember, it’s nothing more than a job. Your family and friends are what is most important. Take care of yourself physically, no one is asking you to run a marathon, just walk 30 minutes a day, maybe lift some weights, be healthy, and stick around awhile, your loved ones would enjoy that. RIP boss, wish you could’ve enjoyed a bit of retirement.

I liked John Thomas, but he did not deserve the line of duty death. It was Hilliards idea and his testimony that John was stressed due to his job. John did pass away on his favorite recliner in his home, and his wife tried giving him CPR. John was a smoker for most of his life.
The stress of this job killed many of us for a lot less money.

Years ago I worked in 004 and one of the guys didn't make it in for check off. After failing to raise him on the radio
(yes kids, no GPS existed at the time) he was found parked in the squad car slumped over the wheel. Heart attack I believe it was. Don't think the department even made that an on duty death. They should have, but no one on this job gives a shit about someone else's family. Gary was probably in his early forties. Good guy, good policeman...

Years ago I read about a stress study and one of the conclusions was that for every year that one stayed in stressful jobs after 55, one loses 2 and half years of life expectancy. Reading this all those years ago was a major driving force in my personal decision to retire at 55. I'm now retired and all my aches and pains are gone. Stress is a real thing and affects your body silently. Leave as soon as you can if you can. May God almighty always bless the men and women of CPD.

Disagree. Work till mandatory retirement. Take and pass the power test at 64, work every day without going on the medical the last year, do not apply for the pension——— and then sue, sue, sue for age discrimination. The reason people loose In Court is because of not doing those three things.
Most people make their own stress. Read the COD rules and work around themvor follow them where it is best for you and your family. I worked until 63 and enjoyed the job and loaded up on deferred instead of retiring

What hurts the most? The feeling of being replaced. It's like no matter what you did, it wasn't enough. And no matter what you do to try & capture their heart again, it doesn't seem to work. & you're suddenly left thinking that you'll never be enough".

He endured that Feds investigation in 25 and 17 where the coppers were shaking down the Polish. People. He saw his neighbor go down for that and it really bothered him. He had obvious physical changes due to his position but didn't complain. He was out of the office when he died but was still conducting business from home. There were many reasons why Hilliard pushed for his duty related pension. Please do your homework.
