Rocky hat is great for Extremely cold weather, pull down the ear flaps and your good. Great at a fire scene.

The trooper hat, aka the Rocky hat is warmer. If the hat was good enough for the police chief Marge Gunderson in Fargo, it is good enough for me.

The fold-over beanie for warmth, all day.
No shield to worry about, and can conveniently fit into a back pocket.
Go with the Fargo hat. Flaps down coming in for a landing. Keeps those ears warm and you can always point to your shield on the hat if you come upon someone pushing a leg into a wood chipper. That's what I think !

Ok so the Rocky hat was my go to at details where we were gonna be out there for a while. Skull cap was great for general use. Crown caps while nice and traditional were the most uncomfortable thing I ever put on my head. Good for formal stuff to complete the look.
Definitely watch cap…NEVER owned a rocky the squirrel hat.

OT: Been thinking about why myself and most of us hate this job now. I realized that I took this job to help people. And, if I think back to day one of the academy where they asked everyone why they signed up for this job, almost everyone said the same thing. It was pretty simple. I wanted to drive around and use my life to help people as much as I could.
As the years went by, the department has made it exponentially harder to do that simple task. You would think it would be so simple, and it used to be much simpler, but it has become so much harder. The amount of paperwork and oversight and potential for negative ramifications for getting involved in even the smallest incident has turned a lot of cops from wanting to help, to wanting to avoid. The dept continues to make things more cumbersome, more difficult at every turn whereas they should be working on making things easier. It’s completely about shifting liability now. They are “training us to death” with elearnings that completely suck just to say we’ve been trained. So they can pass the buck if a lawsuit comes down.
I just really miss the early days of my career where they would hand me only keys and a radio from the radio room. I’d go around for 8 hours trying to do as much good as I could without any worry about getting involved in something.
I think it’s time for me to get off this job. I know it is. I still want a job where I can truly help people, but cpd has made that simple task too hard. Maybe not even just cpd, the whole profession. If anyone has any tips on new employment that would be fulfilling and has insurance please respond with any suggestions. I’m ready to go. I’ve had enough.

Police departments are very different in Red States. Florida, Texas and others are greatly pro police. Most would take a lateral transfer since they would already consider you trained. You would have to take some training to familiarize yourself with local laws and ordinances. Your pension carries over and you usually find better schools. Houston PD has no residency requirements. You'll probably take a pay cut but you can live wherever you want and not pay for schooling your kids. The grass IS greener on the other side, trust me. Just start looking. BTW..you used to get one year to decide whether or not you want to return.

I think back and can’t help but wonder why we let them beat us down so bad and turn this job into what it’s become. We have so much power, probably thee most powerful entity in the city and we just rolled over and let them do this to us. We could’ve fought back. We could’ve made every change they tried making a living hell. Maybe if we had a better union. Maybe one big union instead of every rank having its own union. We needed strong leadership both on cpd and union and we needed true unification instead we got leaders that rolled over at every whim. This job truly and utterly sucks now. Can’t wait for this prison sentence to be over.

Sadly I’d say majority of us are right there with you. But it does get easier when you think of the job as just a bi weekly check or just something to do to keep busy. That’s how I get by now. The once mighty CPD is dead and gone.

So true ~ a lot of these guys have no life except for the CDP. I was lucky enough to retire when I was 48 years old. I got into Deferred Comp when I was in the academy and had a nice chunk of change which I drew monthly before I could get my pension at 50. Moved out of Illinois and never looked back!
Hmmmm. Glad to see the pathetic bball cap gone, never had one. The skull cap is ok but honestly the Bullwinkle cap looks better and IMO is warmer as well. Function and form, who would have thought.
I know the crown hat is not ideal but it looks good a tops for the uniform when we actually had a uniform. You look at coopers they look like they are wearing a “technicolor dream coat” of a uniform. Been retired a few years now and after 33 on the job I didn’t know what a proper uniform was from when I first started. Anyways, time to tighten it up, look professional,look good and be safe. Well said ... change cant come and wont come because even though the blue watch out for the blue during a shift.. the blue are the furthest from unity than ever. Everyone is out for themselves because they want a "spot" or a rank. Imagine if we all just answered our jobs.. cut paper and cleared for the next assignment. This city would give us all or demands and stop screwing with us and driving us to either leave or kill ourselves. But no the blue cant and wont and I blame that on the standards being lowered from hiring to promoting.. the sheep well never revolt.
