Tasers are now allowed on the vest. About damn time even though I've been doing it for years. Best and safest place to put your taser is on your vest. Easier to retrieve and easy to put back when cuffing the suspect.

The Round Crown had its place in history. At one time people identified themselves by their hats. Taxi drivers, bus drivers, milkmen, clerks, military service men, police men, firemen, gas station attendants, security guards, sea captains, aviation pilots, railway staff, and many others wore the round crown hat. At one time that was the easiest way to identify someone. We are no longer in the year 1920. We are in the year 2026, get a freaking designer to help make something in the 21st century. The round crown should only be for ceremonial events and upper Command Staff. When you don’t know what to do you go back to something old.
The department is messed up! It’s not the old officers and it’s not the young officers. It’s management. We don’t have qualified upper management. If any one of them lost this job they would be homeless. They have no clue how to do anything. Morale falls squarely on them.
Just about everyone who has any time just wants to retire. I can’t tell you how many officers I know are just counting down the days. They have countdown clocks on their phones and are literally counting down the days. The job was fun. Officers loved helping people and doing police work. Now most officers just want to get through the day and go home. Gee whiz, how did all that come to be. Management!!!!!!!!
With the hat not being part of the uniform I’ll just give it to a local homeless shelter.
For all those that say we get a uniform allowance, it’s also for the upkeep and cleaning of our uniforms.
I guess the Superintendent likes to have CPD look militarized. I thought we were to be approachable and be identified as members of the community. Most of the officers look like they could have participated in the D-Day, June 6, 1944, Allied invasion of Normandy, France, WW II.

The union should have done something on this one. I have 3 years on. I work midnights and haven’t gotten a whole lot of uniform checks. I put out a lot of money on my uniform. I don’t appreciate being told I can’t use something I purchased with good faith. Others on my watch feel the department should buy back the caps if we can’t wear them. What is the union doing? I haven’t heard nothing from the Watch Representative. All he said was he just learned about it too. I was like OMG, what is going on. I thought the union was looking out for us. I told him I guess not. I also told him that the hat is going to cost people at the union their jobs. I will vote them out over this hat. Maybe that will get someone to fight for the people just trying to work. We have to take a stand somewhere. Today it’s a hat.

If you get sick from not wearing a hat. That’s why you have medical benefits. Remember to call the district an hour before your shift and let them know you have a headache. Take to aspirins and call the medical section the following morning.
The uniform needs a whole revamp. Start from scratch and redesign it. The uniform in its current configuration looks stupid and strange. How about pants pocket on the side for the LEMART kit. Maybe some hidden pockets to get all the crap off the vest. Get bold. Maybe even new colors. Blue shirt and dark blue pants. How about more colors. No one takes us seriously anymore.
When a new hire comes on, I’m going to show them a picture of me wearing a CPD baseball cap. That’s how I used to roll. If I ever make Commander I’ll have the picture in my office.

When I came on the job in 1998, I was amazed at how crazy bosses were about wearing that damn crown hat. I'm going on domestic in the projects and getting written up for not wearing my crown hat...ridiculous! I had previously worked in a suburb that had no policy on hats and nobody wore one. I learned later that a big boss read a study about how the navy went down hill because they loosened standards and allowed beards. CPD brass thought by forcing us to wear the crown they were really doing something to curb petty corruption. I never wore my crown on one job because the ghetto dont care!

I got on in 98 and the only time we had to wear our hats was for details-Sox Park, Traffic detail etc... and get this! We all survived somehow and none of us ever lost it!

I had similar experience with wearing my round crown in the District and keeping it in the trunk. When the boss were around we had to wear it work on the west side. Just ridiculous.

Back in the day, there was a summer version of the crown cap. It was a blue mesh. Also the traffic division had their own white crown caps.
We could have stood shoulder to shoulder during Covid and told that runt Mayor to pound sand regardless if you had the shot or not. If you research it, you will find that the idea of the checkerboard hat band originated in England. It's purpose is so a PO can be identifiable at a distance, especially in crowded urban environments. But, since height requirements are non existent now it's pretty much moot, given the 4'11'' dwarves on the job

While in US Army, we trained with 2d Battalion- Scots Guards in UK in 1982, right after they returned from Falklands. For everyday wear, they wore khaki/ dark brown beret. However, their service cap had Checkering, like CPD.
Another Scottish Regiment, Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, had a blue band with white zig zags embroidered on it, on their service caps.
My point is: every unit had its very own uniform, and their was no one single dress standard. Somehow, they had more important things to worry about!

as a long retired CPD( happily) and sometimes tourist into Chicago, I can say that the personal appearance of CPD is just disgusting . Sloppy, dirty, worn out uniforms with no consistently. Long beards, long hair, jewelry, vest covers so packed with stuff that I am surprised they can fit behind the wheel of the car. The baseball caps, to me made some sense, but like every uniform item must be replaced when worn out or dirty and not shaped and folded. The blame rests on the watch supervisors who just seem to ignore everything. But, the real reason that everything seems to be going to hell is the patronage and clouted system that is now the management of CPD .
