Thirty-Three Years

Of course, he'll be out long before that:

  • A man who shot two Chicago police officers after one of them saw a gun tumble from his pocket as he tried to pay for his order at a West Side hot dog stand was sentenced Friday to 33 years in prison.

Kailon Harris-Caldwell, 28, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder in exchange for concurrent 33-year terms handed down by Judge Thomas Byrne, according to court records.

Prosecutors say the incident unfolded around 3:30 a.m. on March 4, 2022, when Harris-Caldwell reached into his pocket to pay for an order at Original Maxwell Street, 3801 West Harrison Street, as a Chicago police officer stood nearby. A handgun with an extended magazine fell from his pocket when he pulled his hand out.

Harris-Caldwell picked up the gun and immediately fired at the officer’s head from close range, prosecutors alleged, leaving the cop with a graze wound. He then opened fire on the officer’s partner, who was seated in a marked patrol car in the restaurant’s parking lot. That officer was struck by a gunshot to the leg.

Last we had heard (correct us if mistaken) the one Officer was later promoted (by score) and the other one will never work as as the police again because of the resultant nerve damage and remaining bullet fragments.

This offender had jumped bail in Florida after using a rifle to shoot at sheriff deputies following a home invasion.

Thirty-three years isn't even a good start.

He and all his know and, should get the death penalty.

Am so tired of learning about injured and murdered brave LEOs. A few death penalty cases and the ferals will reduce in population, then fewer brave blue will hit the morgue, or medical and lose their careers/body parts/functions. Saddened to learn of their own going medical issues and expenses.

Laying a fingernail on a LEO should be grounds for an automatic 30 year with no time off sentence and the ferals has to pay back room, board and medical costs.

Unless it's an obvious friendly thank you hug.

I'm glad officers are okay, but why were they separated? When one gets out of the car, the other gets out.

The politicians support criminals and want to destroy police officers if they make a mistake.

For police officers the streets have real consequences. For the bad guys it’s just like a video game! No real consequences!

Will Florida require him to serve time there after the democrats let him out in Illinois? Hopefully so.

After he does time here they can send him to Florida to do another sentence for attempted murder of the sheriff's deputies there.

Lets not forget the the policy in the Illinois Department of Corrections is to automatically cut any sentence by 50% for good behavior even before the criminal serves on day behind bars. Then they time taken off for every day with an ankle monitor or time in Cook County Jail.

The Chicago Tax payers, City of Chicago, Chicago Police Department, and the Chicago Police Pension Fund cannot afford a US Military type pay package for injured officers. Shit, even the US Gov't can't afford it. The proof is that bonds have to be sold to cover the liabilities.
Officers need to be offered jobs for their limited capacities. That puts full duty officers on the street and doesn't drain the pension fund.

I thought FL was tough on crime especially cases when shooting at police officers. How was this idiot out on such a low bond? This sounds more like it happened in Illinois not Florida. Am I missing something?

Tax bills are due on April Fools day for Cook County's property owning fools. Using IDOC logic, if may tax bill is $3,000, can I pay half of my property's tariff for previous year's good on-time payment behavior? If I can receive a 50% reduction in my Cook County tax bill, I'll gladly wear a Tom Dart (D-Crook Co.) electronic monitor (EM) just like violent felons who serve considerably less than 50% of their prison sentence. Criminals reap benefits while the responsible working stiff 9 to 5er takes it up the keister without lube.

Convicted criminal sentencing reductions, never property tax reductions, are at the core of the ruling democrat authoritarians prioritized protocols. Get out the vote!

As far as sentencing goes for serious criminal behavior there simply is no justice. In California a pedophile who was convicted of multiple felonies of sexual crimes against kids as young as 5 yrs old was given 355 years in prison. The hair gel governor, Newscum.signed a bill in 2020 that allowed parole to be considered for inmates over the age of 50 who have served at least 20 yrs. This convicted menace was allowed to apply for the 50/20 program and appeared before the parole board. He admitted in front of the board that young children still sexually excited him but promised to control himself. The parole board granted him parole after serving about 30 yrs. W T F is wrong with liberals? 355 yrs in prison, young lives ruined, lifetime emotional trauma for the victims and this guy is back on the streets. The justice system is a fucking joke and Illinois is right up there with the justice circus.

Not all sentences are cut in half. Some are 85 percent and others are 100 percent depending on if there is a body or a sex crime

The pension board has given this injured officer a very hard time awarding him with duty disability. The injured Officer was in a "No Pay Status" for months. Luckly, his fellow Officer set up a Go Fund me page so he could support his family. What is infuriated is one of the police elected Officers on the pension board actually said, " He got a go fund me page he can live off that money". The pension board has forced the Officer to see several doctors, and they all said the same thing, "he is permanently injured". Even after several doctor declared he was unfit for duty, the Officer had to hire an attorney to receive his duty disability. There is a problem in the way the pension board looks at duty disability. There is a bigger problem in the way officers who have legitimately been injured are forced to go on "NO PAY STATUS for months" and have to scrape to get bye. A legitimately injured Officer should never go in the No Pay Status for months until their cases are adjudicated by the board. FOP has done nothing for years regarding this issue. You can not only blame the current FOP President, but former past presidents have also just given this problem lip service. Almost every post on this page complains about various bosses who are currently on the department and in many cases, rightfully so. However, I think that the same anger should be vented on how the pension board treats injured Officers. Let's face it, you could be next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here come the Good Ol' Boys Club aka FOP endorsed goons!

Before we start blaming injured officers for supposedly draining the pension fund, maybe we should start by looking at how the pension fund itself spends money.

How much is the Chicago Police Pension Fund paying to lease prime office space in downtown Chicago? How much money is spent sending injured officers to so-called “independent” medical exams where the board-selected doctor collects $2,500–$3,000 for what is often a quick evaluation? How much is spent conducting surveillance on officers who are already severely injured?

And let’s not forget the legal fees, consultants, and administrative overhead tied to contesting disability claims.

If the real concern is protecting the pension fund and taxpayer money, those expenses should probably be examined before pointing fingers at officers who were injured doing the job the city asked them to do.

One stepped out to grab something to eat from the maxwells real fast. But you’re right, it is their own fault for getting shot. Stepping 10ft away from your partner to get a polish means it’s acceptable to shoot them. Cut the offender loose and fire both of the cops. They basically dared him to do it. Sarcasm of course. People like you are insufferable, guy steps a few feet away from his partner for a minute to get food and you blame them for getting shot. I hope you’re not a cop, but this seems like a douchebag know it all copper thing to say. We got to stop hiring liberals like this.

It occurred at the maxwell’s - partner was parked feet away from the other officer making an order.

Lets point concentrate on the actions of the criminal element here-
Not the officers trying to get something to eat.

“Injured Officers” that claim they can’t work light duty as the police at a desk, while also employed as lawyers, real estate agents, locksmiths, and etc. are a BIG issue. Stop defending scammers! I hate going to work also on the current department, my back and head hurts ALL the time, but I put on my big girl pants and work midnights in a rough district because I have a work ethic.

This post is about a guy who ambushed two Chicago police officers and tried to execute one of them at point-blank range before opening fire on the other sitting in a marked squad car.

One officer was shot in the head. The other was shot multiple times and will never work as the police again because of permanent nerve damage.

That’s what this story is about.

Yet somehow the discussion immediately turns into the usual lecture about “injured officers,” work ethic, and people supposedly gaming the disability system.

Nobody here defended scammers. If someone commits fraud, deal with them.

But pretending that officers who are permanently injured from getting shot on this job are the same as someone complaining about a sore back from working midnights is completely missing the point.

Some injuries from this job don’t heal. Some officers don’t get the option of just putting their “big girl pants” on and going back to work.

Sometimes the job ends the night someone decides to pull a gun and start shooting at cops.

That’s what happened here.

And frankly, 33 years still feels light for trying to murder two Chicago police officers.
