Downgrading Weed
No longer a Schedule I drug like heroin:
President Donald Trump’s acting attorney general on Thursday signed an order reclassifying state-licensed medical marijuana as a less-dangerous drug, a major policy shift long sought by advocates who said cannabis should never have been treated like heroin by the federal government.
The order signed by Todd Blanche does not legalize marijuana for medical or recreational use under federal law. But it does change the way it’s regulated, shifting licensed medical marijuana from Schedule I — reserved for drugs without medical use and with high potential for abuse — to the less strictly regulated Schedule III. It also gives licensed medical marijuana operators a major tax break and eases some barriers to researching cannabis.
Marijuana enforcement was pretty much a non-starter over the last decade of our careers. You can't walk down the street or drive down the highway without smelling that crap everywhere. It goes no where in court and no one seems to care.
Weren't weed tax revenues supposed to cure all of of Illinois' budget woes? Like the lottery, right?
We imagine more weed gets tossed in the sewers or scattered into the wind than gets inventoried nowadays.

Marijuana is a gateway drug that leads into darker areas, according to my firsthand observations of my nephew (now recovering 3 years sober) and a son in law that has been abusing weed for the past 20 years and my daughter for the past year. She's on the way out, but not fast enough for me. Lots of heartache with marijuana - why get involved with something that changes your brain chemistry?
I always thought of it as a pimpy arrest, and only reserved for real jagoffs. If you were a decent working stiff, I may have "lost" it by dropping it on the ground and went about my merry way. Not worth my time.

Weed is difficult to quantify intoxication in the field unlike alcohol where a breathalyzer or blood draw can give rapid results. A standard level for alcohol intoxication has been established of .08 along with established data regarding quantity versus time. Alcohol is not marketed for medicinal purposes and standards for the sale and consumption are in place. There is a time and place for everything and behind the wheel or work is not the place, If you are going to legalize it then give us the tools, rules and punishments needed to keep society safe from self induced stupidity.

Just don't tax the shit out of it and have some simple regulations:
* No driving or operating machinery when stoned. Yeah, it's detectable in your blood for a period of time after you smoke, but you're not stoned after that 4-5 hr period past smoking... Gummies/brownies are a different matter because they have to digest.
* No smoking in public - just like you have with cigarettes.
* Kids under 18: No weed. Just like we tell them no alcohol under 21. Are some going to get it? Yeah. Go figure it out like we do with booze and deal with that problem.
I can honestly say I've never seen a bunch of stoners get into a fight... Sometimes they get irked, but then forget what they were going to fight about, start laughing and move on with life. Contrast with alcohol: Beer muscles, Whiskey drunks, etc. always ready to go on to war at the drop of a hat or a stepped on toe.
A gateway drug? No. When the government banned it, dealers moved in with other products - Heroin, Cocaine, PCP, LSD... Then when the government pushed bans on those things, the dealers moved to something else: Crack, Meth, synthetics, etc. They created the whole damn problem.

I was working Housing West in 011 late a few years ago, a car rolled past us right before check off. It smelled like the car was on fire. An odor like burning plastics, oil, chemicals. I asked the guy I was working with if that was the shit the city is selling and he confirmed it. The stuff teenagers ( me included) used to smoke smelled like burning leaves. People used to rake their yards and burn the pile of leaves. Organic smelling. Cheap weed smelled skunky. Six months on the job and I’m working Bt. #1331 on afternoons. Despite a couple gun pinches and a PSMV my partner and I are chewed out by old Captain Heraty for having an only couple of movers for the week. An hour out of roll call we see a really clean gold Mercury Marquee blow the light at N/B on Sacramento from Madison and we manage to stop him a block north. We could both use the mover right now! Once out of the car Jose takes off and is quickly captured. Unsure if the car is stolen we examined the interior and discover five one pound packages of wrapped weed, a kilogram of cocaine and a Colt Mustang pistol. Don’t ever think that marijuana and harder more drugs are not linked and don’t lead to the same end. Heraty didn’t counsel us again on writing more movers for at least another week and Jose absconded after he lost at the motion to suppress. Fun times!

Always used weed to search vehicles, person etc. Trying to find guns, harder drugs or other felonies. If nothing bigger and off. Wasn't a stroke, we dropped it by the curb and went on our way. There has never been validated study showing cannabis to be of any medicinal value. It can ease the pain and sickness of chemo therapy, but does nothing for any illness. Then, I could never fathom the rush to smoke marijuana to " cure" a health problem and cause another health problem, that of polluting your lungs.
Every old person I know takes it to sleep. My 82 year old wife would wake up at 0300 every night and not be able to go back to sleep. The problem is that they made it a schedule one drug preventing research into its medical uses.

What gets me is the " social equity" legal marijuana dispensary licenses in Illinois. These licenses were given to mostly black people because they were arrested for possession of marijuana and only charged with a misdemeanor. That means that this person was dealing on the streets, was probably charged with a felony which was downgraded by the state's attorney. Very few people in Illinois who were truly in possession for personal use were arrested.

The legit use of medical marijuana is extremely limited (glaucoma, chemo patients, etc.) What you got instead was bunch of whore doctors writing prescriptions for any number of real or imagined ailments ("stress", "migraines", etc.) so that these people can get the lower tax rates at the dispensary, then re-sell it or use it recreationally.

There is absolutely no “medicine” in smoking weed. Show me another medicine that is smoked, whose dosage is impossible to control, and has no quality control or consistent dosage production from one grower to another. In fact, there have already been two FDA approved medications-Marinol and Cesamet-that are made from THC and are in pill form. They treat the same symptoms that smoking weed allegedly treats. Problem is that the Medicinal Marijuana people are not looking for relief, they just want to smoke weed. I would have more respect for them if they just admitted it instead of pushing the bs medical marijuana narrative

Like any substance out there that can alter one’s perception, the biggest problem I have seen is the fact of NO REGULATION as to the amount of the “purity” (THC level?) which has been ignored. Pot shops are and have been pretty much allowed everywhere to just sell anything. And if I read this right, it’s primarily “medical usage” that has been downgraded? As if that’s what the populace is buying.

Joe Rogan or someone said it best. In summary, There are a lot of people who smoke weed and have absolutely no discipline in their lives. They get stoned and stare at a wall or a TV screen for several hours. It takes a lot of discipline to be able to smoke weed and still remain productive and the fact of the matter is most of the people out there smoking weed just thinking it is going to make their lives better is just wrong.
I smoked weed in high school. It pretty much made me catatonic...At a time in a teenager's life, and during the time when social skills are being developed, its never a good ideal to suppress the social interactive part of the brain.

I grew up in a city worker neighborhood in the 60s with very heavy drug usage by the teens. I saw how it worked out long term . As stated above the stoners lack ambition and never amounted to anything ever. Gateway drug ? Yes in my hood it was. We lost dozens of kids including my brother who moved on to harder drugs . Also a sister who eventually became very detached from the normal world and died young, daily heavy pot smoker. Also the drug business being what it is there were many killings and incarcerations. From what I read here the young tik tok police know it all and aren’t afraid of a little weed. Good luck with that in your future. Agree that alcohol is a much worse drug, makes people violet and aggressive. But why does it have to be either or. Is live in the 21st century that hard that you have to be high all the time to survive ?
