Is this spillover from the Greyhound Station?
A man was shot during an altercation on a West Loop sidewalk during Thursday morning’s rush hour, Chicago police said.
The victim, 42, was in the 300 block of South Canal Street when he got into an argument with another man around 8:24 a.m., according to police and CPD dispatch audio. The second man pulled out a gun during the argument and fired one time, striking the victim in the left leg, police said. He then climbed into a black Chevrolet Malibu and fled the scene.
Not downtown proper, but at 8:24 in the morning - it's not like there aren't a few thousand people headed to work around that time.

Downtown is a disaster.
Victim is a professional working at a large corporation. Offender almost hit him in the crosswalk, a dispute ensued, and the offender exited his car and shot him. I’m sure the mayor would congratulate his brother from another mother for fighting back against white supremacy.

Probably a suburban commuter exiting the Metra station right there on Canal (United's offices are about a quarter-mile away at 233 S. Wacker, over the river).

Would help on the street to possibly prevent and diffuse violent interactions.

There are thugs all over the loop, River North and the tourist area of Michigan Ave that were never present there 10 years ago. This area was secured for tourist and workers years ago. Been a Metra commuter since ‘99 and crosswalks with the walk signal in the loop are the worst I can remember. Be on the lookout for the e-bikes and scooters that obey no traffic laws and have their pick of sidewalks and streets. Wait out the red light runners when the walk signal starts. Can we talk about illegal window tint? Noticing that a lot - impossible to make eye contact with the turning cars, bonus for a windshield!
Enforce that (and do stops for expired registration) with the broken windows theory and loop congestion might improve. Quality of life goes up as a bonus. Nevermind, this is IL and some laws enforced on some folks are (insert sparklefarts flowery rhetoric about disparate impacts).
Caring for parents is the ONLY reason my wife and I haven’t already bailed from this overtaxed hellhole!
