How Far Society Has Fallen (UPDATE)
Our post the other day about the Downtown Takeover where someone used a car as a push broom against a marked squad car was mostly to point out (A) how bad the disrespect has gotten and (B) how hesitant Police are in general to take action in the face of overt law breaking.
It's far worse than we thought:

numerous reports and documented RDs pulled regarding officers, on duty,
in uniform having guns pointed at them.
Just the other night it happened in 003, POs had an offender in custody, car pulled up next to them and two offenders pointed guns at them and drove off.
Couple weeks ago, same instance happened but no one was in custody. POs pulled a car over, offender pointed a gun at a PO and drove off. Probably 3 cases of similar accounts in southside districts within a month.
This isn’t being spoken about and it seems it’s not being documented anywhere besides a case report and an overlooked AMC message. I don’t know if you want to classify this as officer safety, or maybe CWB can get wind of it since ya know, CPD has so many “excessive force complaints”. Having a gun pointed at you and you respond with nothing seems a bit odd. Stay frosty kids.
Pointing a gun at Police used to be an invitation to being shot. But now?
Well, the in-car camera is pointed straight ahead. The body cam may or may not be running (depending on the situation) and....it's pointed straight ahead. We aren't about to advocate driving around with your pistol in your hand, but if you've ever tried to draw a pistol while seated in the tight quarters of a car, wearing a vest, it isn't getting out in a hurry.
Tie that into the Department not allowing you to chase....you see where we're going with this.
Although you'd be 100% justified in lighting up someone who pulled up next to your squad car and pointed a gun at you, tactically, you're in a bad spot. The end result isn't anything you'd want to experience more than once.

UPDATE: If you reward bad behavior, you're going to get more of it....a LOT MORE of it:

Left the job and now work on a PD 50 miles from Chicago but a world away. I can chase, everyone still goes to jail, great co workers, 95% of the town loves us. All I can say is when you get in the squad, check your holster/gun. How is it sitting against the seat. Adjust so you can make a clean draw before leaving the lot. Repeat as needed.

Body camera has been a great tool but isn't enough for how much scrutiny we have. I was just in a use of force situation. What my body camera video showed and what I saw were two absolutely different things because my head can actually turn and my eyes can actually move independent of my chest. If we're expected to be perfect out there, we need much better gear. We need a better camera system, one that can actually see what we see and, much more importantly, not see what we do not see.

The dodge charger outweighs the ford explorer and has a much lower center of gravity. Coupled with the much higher horsepower even if the explorer was trying to counter the charger with their own engine power the torque would just cause the wheels to break traction making it easier to push. If you listen to the video closely you can hear the explorer is in park because you hear the wheels being forcefully pushed along the pavement. I agree with a post I saw previously, the best course of action in Shitcago is to keep your distance and hope the yutes move along when they see your lights in the distance.

Oakland for example will use overwhelming response to secure all possible escape routes then impound the involved vehicles while making necessary arrests or issuing citations. Florida uses interagency coordination with FHP and surrounding agencies to do the same thing. FHP handles nearly all pursuits.

Pay close attention to the end of the video. The Charger is doing a burnout but not actually pushing back the squad. In the last couple of seconds there is a gap between the two which wouldn't happen if the Charger was pushing it. The squad car is slowly backing up with the Charger up against it and the a-holes on top of it...

A violent felony allows for a continuation under the balancing test because the necessity to apprehend violent individuals weighs heavily in the choice to continue. Keep the same attitude when they hand you a 60+ day suspension and your family doesn't have health insurance for 30 days. Surely the "wife act" will act will look great at your deposition and COPA will love it.
Breaking News: Whomever you think is going to take care of you whenever you are involved in a traffic pursuit fatality, will not be holding your hand at your deposition, trial or COPA. At the end of the day your going to have a jury deciding weather apprehending a criminal was worth a uninvolved citizen losing their life. Maybe instead of the tough guy "what if my wife was robbed" scenario you start considering "what if my wife was killed" while the police were pursing some shithead scenario.
When was the last time a Lieutenant allowed a chase to continue , especially in 018.
But on balance - this one should have continued .
