New Fire Equipment

This article is from two days ago and seems to have little coverage from the local media types:

  • The Chicago Fire Department has placed one of the largest emergency apparatus orders in North America, selecting E-ONE and Wheeled Coach to supply 120 new vehicles in a deal valued at more than $100 million.

The order, placed through Fire Service, Inc., includes 42 E-ONE pumpers, 38 E-ONE aerial ladder trucks and 40 Wheeled Coach ambulances.

The investment is intended to support firefighter safety, fleet modernisation and reliable emergency response across the city.

We've written before about CFD equipment being so old that the feds threatened to pull accreditation for the entire Department.

And tonight, if you do a google search for "chicago fire department buys new trucks" there aren't any local media outlets covering the story. $100 million is a big deal for one-hundred-twenty pieces of equipment.

Is this because they don't want to embarrass a democrat blue city $hithole that isn't (and hasn't) providing the fire department with appropriate equipment to protect citizens?

Or is it because when you look up E-ONE and Wheeled Coach, they're both based in Florida because Porkulous has driven vehicle assembly lines out of Illinois, so we're sending tax dollars to factory friendly red states?

In any event, congrats to the CFD for finally getting some new vehicles.

Don't scratch the paint - you might not see another one for thirty years.

Good for CFD. Now all they need is 20 more ambulances and about 200 more paramedics and get a new commissioner who lives in the city and has actual hands on firefighting experience.

It is deplorable that the fire department has been driving broken down rigs.

If that contract was let to companies in Illinois or any other democrat controlled stste the bill would have been double. Ain’t it nice Illinois gives a Florida based company a huge contract supporting Florida jobs and the local economies while Illinois goes bankrupt.

And if the Democrat convention is not coming to Chicago, most, if not all may be cancelled.

the governor of Florida should put up signs in Chicago saying "hey, thanks for ordering your new fire equipment from Florida, it gives our citizens a job"

Paying a driver is minimal compared to the recent sky high prices for new rigs. The manufacterures have been bought up and equipment prices have since gone through the roof.

I didn't get past the first few lines of the post before I googled E-ONE to see if they are electric... they are not. A small win for sanity.

Dual airhorns and European sounding sirens on the trucks. Great. Now another upgraded toy for firefighter to play with

$100 million was appropriated for new fire trucks in 2019 before the pandemic. I don’t think that amount of rigs were bought between then and this new contract. SO, where did that money go.

Delivering a new fire truck from Florida to Chicago generally costs between $2,500 and $5,500. The final price depends on whether you hire a professional driver to road-test and drive it the roughly 1,200 miles, or secure specialized heavy-haul flatbed transport.

This order will take a couple of years to complete. I see a lot of city officials heading to Florida in January and February to check on these vehicles progress.

The CFD bosses got wined and dined down in Florida before signing the contract. There are midwest based manufacturers but did we choose them...nope. When the new apparatus need warranty service they have to be driven back to Florida. They will not come to service the most basic issues with their vehicles. Instead CFD has to down the vehicle to be serviced...really well thought out contract.

Reduce CFD replace firefighters with drones. Start with two drones at half the fire houses.
Twelve hour shifts would provide firefighters with safety, waking up from a sound sleep to fight a fire is very dangerous.

You don't know what you are talking about. E-One apparatus do not go back to Florida for warranty service - that is done right here in Illinois.

Should have ordered South American Sirens so the new arrivals will recognize them as emergency vehicles.

Second thought, did they order the European sirens to differentiate themselves from the evil CPD?

Good idea. Next time it's 12 below zero and I ask you in the squad car about traffic control at a extra alarm and you roll the window down 2 inches to respond i will look up to see if my drone can help out.

Can’t think of one firehouse where they sleep all day or night. For 24hrs they are chasing around ambulances every ambulance run they are following them, That stereotype of a fireman sleeping went out the door 25yrs ago when it was an actual fire dept. it isn’t anymore it’s an EMS dept.

I don’t feel bad for the amount of CFD equipment that goes down. They drive those thinks like they are tanks and race cars. They treat them like crap. No regard for the rig one bit. Then they cry when it goes down because they hit speed bumps at 40mph with 1000 gallons of water inside. Morons

Where are you getting it in Illinois? From "Dukies Fire Trucks and Shit?"

6/19/2026 06:34:00 AM

Because they aren't spending millions for "bike lanes" Through some ghetto-ass neighborhood. Because they're not funding "violence interrupters" which is a fancy way to say "We give gangbangers money for shit." And a dozen other things is why they can afford them.

Chicago should reduce the number of fire engines and ladder trucks and increasing the number of ambulances. Fire incidence in the city has declined over time, and these high-cost fire apparatus are frequently being used to respond to medical calls in place of dedicated EMS resources.
