Shots Fired....at an Airplane

Having an airport in the neighborhood, we're surprised this doesn't happen more often:

  • The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a plane was struck by a firework near Chicago’s Midway Airport on the Fourth of July.

According to the FAA, the pilot of Delta Flight 1076 reported that a fireworks mortar struck the aircraft just before it landed at Midway Airport around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The plane landed safely without incident.

A statement from Delta said the plane was coming in from Atlanta and confirmed that it made contact with a firework.

Maybe it does happen more often than we hear about? Last night seemed....extensive (?) in terms of fireworks once the rain died out.

And speaking of loud reports, this one from the Babylon Bee:

  • After fielding a flood of calls complaining of loud popping noises, the Chicago Police Department issued a statement assuring residents that those were just gun shots.

City officials reminded residents that discharging fireworks within city limits carries fines and potential criminal penalties, while also noting that the familiar staccato soundtrack of neighborhood gunfire should not be mistaken for any sort of holiday celebration.

"These noises are nothing to be alarmed about," said Police Chief Larry Snelling. "Chicagoans can rest easy that we have not seen any illegal fireworks, and the loud 'bangs' that residents are hearing are nothing but gunfire. There's been an uptick in gang battles as well as criminals shooting bullets into the sky for fun, but that's all. Everything is under control."

With the amount of fireworks we heard and saw last night, we can only imagine the amount of sales tax dollars that went to Indiana and Wisconsin from Illinois residents. You'd think that some politician trying to figure out ways to raise revenue (instead of cutting costs) would wise up and get their relatives into a fireworks business.

I think Chicago had a big fire once which is the reason for no fireworks. But, what the hell, might be the best thing that could happen.

When I was assigned to Midway Airport, they would tell us to drive around the airport perimeter to see if we notice anything. We never seen anything. These people have military grade explosives. They fire at planes all the time. Around the Fourth of July. No one has ever held accountable.

There was a very logical reason for banning fireworks in 1942, when Illinois did that. We were in a war & the military needed all the gunpowder for its uses.
But why Illinois won't change that law is just baffling.
But I'd like firecrackers to still be banned, because the halfwit assholes in Rogers Park are firing them off at 3 AM the last few days & waking me up!

I agree...However, m-80's and m-100's are federally banned, then why can you buy them in Indiana and Wisconsin??? ATF should be looking into this and put a stop to these loud fucking useless sticks of dynamite

This is not the stupidest thing I've ever heard - but it's in the top ten.

I live in NW IN. A few days before the 4th just about every fireworks store on the IL/IN border has lines out the door, security, and people directing traffic. Hellinois could make a killing with the sales tax revenue.

Several years ago on the Fourth of July I had to pick someone up at Midway. On the way I had to pass to West Lawn Park at 67th and Kostner. There had to be 500/1000 Hispanics in the park shooting off fireworks.

This happens to be right in the flight path to Midway. How could you not be surprised that some ash..le decided to take a shot at a plane landing?

Chicago is always last. Same with Cook County. The amount of revenue Illinois residences spent every year must be huge for Wisconsin and Indiana. If the politiicians start to argue about it now the sale of fireworks might be legal in Illinois in about 25 years. Same with casinos, cannabis and the Bears.

The reason fireworks are NOT sold in Illinois is because Illinois is an anti-American Blue State!

This did not recent phenomenon. Back in the mid 90's I was working the third watch and received a dispatch to call the Midway Airport Police Detail. I called that office and was informed that a pilot of a plane coming in for a landing was temporary blinded by some type of firework that exploded near the pilot's window. This incident occurred while the plane was crossing 65th and Central to 63rd and Central Ave. I assigned several cars to patrol that area along the flight path landing approach to Midway. I also contacted Bedford Park Police and request that they assist us in this effort, in which they did. Later I learned that several other pilots reported that they experienced similar instantizes of fireworks going off near their planes, but we were not notified until the pilot of this particular flight was temporarily blinded. Thankfully, the co-pilot was not affected by this and was able to land the plane safely.

Where does somebody not realizing that outrageous “quote” is obviously satirical and drawn from a humor publication fit into your list of Top Ten Stupidest Things?

Come on out to Nebraska on the 4th of July. You won't believe it. Stand on a hill in a neighborhood and for 360 degrees around the horizon - EVERYTHING is blowing up, on fire, cul-d-sacs are bombing each other, kids are running around with sparklers and setting off everything explosive they can find, neighbors out drinking and having a good ole time...

This goes on from just before dusk until midnight.

Then the vast majority of the neighbors are out there sweeping up EVERYTHING, putting the stuff in buckets of water and the next morning, you find *very little* debris.

Trash can fires? Yeah sure. Shit happens. Get the hose, call the Fire Dept and put it out.

Blown off fingers, hands, burns, and so on? Yeah. Those morons couldn't understand "Put on ground, light fuse, run away" - happens every year. OH FUCKING WELL! Just because there's dumbasses doesn't mean the rest of us can't have some fun.

Firework stands pop up all over the place about a week before the 4th, Buy 1 get 4 free deals... People spend anywhere from $10 to $10,000 (no joke, they do).

Nebraska rakes in the $$$... Charities run fireworks stands and raise much needed funds.

People complain about the noise, dipshits blowing stuff off out of hours, injuries, scared animals... whatever. The vast majority have an EPIC time.

The sky reverberated for hours - smoke covered the land.

Hellinois would have called the bomb squad out with the shit my neighbors set up (50 home made mortars all wired up... and that was to get the show started)...

No one here attacked an airplane though. That's Pure Chiraqi!
