Illinois has no shortage of leaders who want soldiers to play policeman. In 2010, Illinois State Representative John Fritchey (D) laid out a plan to deploy 100-person team into Chicago’s “hot spot” areas; the team being partly comprised of National Guard troops. Fritchey, who is now a Cook County Commissioner, said at the time:
“As we speak, National Guard members are working side-by-side with our troops to fight a war halfway around the world… The unfortunate reality is that we have another war that is just as deadly taking place right in our back yard. Is this a drastic call to action? Of course it is. But is it warranted when we are losing residents to gun violence at such an alarming rate? Without question.”
Fritchey’s comparison of Chicago to a warzone was shared by his colleagues, citing that the city’s homicide rate for that year was keeping pace with the casualty rate of U.S. troops occupying Iraq and Afghanistan.
Echoing the call for soldiers in the streets, fellow State Rep. LaShawn Ford (D) touted in 2010,”Enough is enough. We’ve already lost too many lives. We need action now.”
The fetish for martial law was palpable. Ford said that deploying armed soldiers on the streets wouldn’t bother him at all. As NBC Chicago quoted him as saying:
“If they can save even one life, one child, in my community, I would welcome the National Guard with open arms and I am confident that my constituents would as well.”
And the calls for the National Guard went back earlier than that. In 2008, former Governor and now convicted felon Rod Blagojevich (D) had suggested the solution as well.

I really believe that the Department does not recognize the manpower shortage. I am told that in command staff meetings, that you do not talk about manpower. While our command staff is so well insulated and given the abundant supply of Kool-Aid handed out, we can go on for years without hiring any more patrolmen.
We are realistically looking at 1000 homicides this year if the increase rate continues. I fail to see what action Trump can make if the mayor resists.

I said it before and I will say it again. The problem is the manpower shortage. 20-15 years ago we had so many more cars out on the street we were running into each other. You were not always bogged down with jobs and had much more time to patrol your beat making your presence known. Now there are half as many cars out there and so much fricking paperwork that they are not on the street as much. Also moral is waaaaay down due to all the bullshit going on....
Not a well thought out plan considering there are not enough cars for everyone. Dozens of officer sitting in the station. What a disaster of a department it has become.

No wonder all the openings in these units. You are at the mercy of the department when it comes to scheduling. Officers need down time or mistakes start happening. There is no perk to working in these units or tact teams. Tact teams now chase around beat units hoping to take any arrest coming from a assignment or long forming traffic violators that have valid state identification in order to get a CB number. This is a dam shame! God forbid they volunteer for a man with a gun call or a narcotics complaint. They never come up on the air for that. The dispatcher has to ask for a tact unit to come up or they are all down on one arrest. Pathetic.

We hear this a lot these days... You cannot compare the two eras, with the advancement of medical technology, the improved ambulances and EMT personnel, cellphones, OEMC, and trauma centers. In the early 90s there were over 900 murders, a little under 50% of the shootings resulted in a homicide. Think about the numbers if we had that percentage last year...

The airports also get federally money not just for overtime but for regular salaries when that dries up what then? More mayhem and anarchy? Or too old: Hauser, Jaglowski, Rini, Underwood.
The above are on more than one ticket. It’s time for the FOP to move in a new direction.

No wonder all the openings in these units. You are at the mercy of the department when it comes to scheduling. Officers need down time or mistakes start happening. There is no perk to working in these units or tact teams. Tact teams now chase around beat units hoping to take any arrest coming from a assignment or long forming traffic violators that have valid state identification in order to get a CB number. This is a dam shame! God forbid they volunteer for a man with a gun call or a narcotics complaint. They never come up on the air for that. The dispatcher has to ask for a tact unit to come up or they are all down on one arrest. Pathetic.

Ah ha! I knew we were number one at something in the burbs. I had tact teams jumping my calls, trying to steal my head years ago. Calls stacking up. Oh well! All the cars down. Oh well! But if someone whispered weed you'd get beat to your own call and be left playing sweep up with the car they tossed and everyone they jacked up in side...or them finding stuff on a call then leaving for the night and sticking you with paper not knowing how said item was recovered or by who. I don't miss that at all.

Whats the big deal boys and girls, When I came on the JOB in 73 there was over 1000 Homicides in 74 and 75 !. It looks to me that the Boys in the Hood need more Range time..... How soon we forget!!! Well for starters you had way more manpower than we do now. Then there just happens to be a few differences between 1973 and 2017 just in case you weren't aware. The following come to mind: Better medical technology, cell phones for quicker response times from police and EMT'S, radios on the officers' persons and gps on the cars for faster response times. Probably more hospitals today too but I admit I'm only speculating there. Then of course you have the crooked politicians and brass today fudging the homicide numbers to make them appear lower than they really are which probably didn't occur nearly as much in 73' without computers. You got shot in the leg in 73' you probably bled out and died in a fucking field somewhere. You get shot in 2017 you pull out your cellphone and you're patched up within 15 minutes. Now get back to your retirement and leave the policing to the 21st century police.
