Do city workers contribute to their pensi9ns if so at what rate, Point out difference in your contributions and the teachers. Use actual examples . Ask about city has all the TIF money to use to close budget gap but most of all counter her argument before she has the chance to throw you further under the bus. You got nothing to lose at this point. You need to get as many taxpayers on your side as possible. Those taxpayers and your voting block can make the difference in turning the city around. Put her on the defensive before her speech have. Your only hope is to attack before she is ready.

If these rumors are true, she sounds pretty optimistic that she'll automatically get re-elected to a second term no matter what happens to the city during her first term. As far as the large retro check, the problem is after a few years the city doesn’t want to settle because they will be saddled with the retro checks. Probably why she doesn’t want to settle. For those who are screaming arbitration consider this. Even though previous arbitration has cited poor economic conditions as a reason for lower raises and that that should be taken into consideration in the future, there is ZERO guarantee it will in the best of times. With a tariff war and "talk" of recession, even if it was Benn again, he could say the conditions are no better now then they were then. More importantly, until the mayor is forced to put her numbers out next week along with her plans to right the ship, we should wait. She is going to cry poor. She is going to blame the pending pension payments of a billion dollars. It wont matter that it's the city's fault and not our. The arbitrator can say the fault doesnt matter, and the money just isnt there. Once she gives her speech, she will have the numbers in black and white and if those numbers include anticipated contact settlements. Stop worrying about retro checks and let's wait a bit longer.

I'll ignore your first idea for now, because it's just idiotic. As for your second idea, that's pretty much exactly how the current city sticker law is supposed to work:
"All Chicago residents driving, parking, leasing and/or owning a vehicle for which they are responsible in the City of Chicago are subject to the Chicago Wheel Tax and must purchase a Chicago City Vehicle Sticker. This includes Chicago residents that maintain their registration outside of the City of Chicago, but use the vehicle in the City."
If you want to impose city taxes on people who don't actually live in the city, you have to do it through sales tax, tolls, parking fees, etc., not income tax.
Joe Public will pack up and leave. Then what! Property values could go downtrend homes become rentals then the community moves in and more in neighborhood sell pretty soon a new ghetto has sprung up. Watched it happen all over the city in the 60s and 70s. How many neighborhoods are already on he edge? To the math genius on $250 for $8k...
Aside from the obvious public school education: Here is what you missed. $8k is less then $10k. Why does that matter? Allowing taxpayers the ability to deduct state and local taxes (SALT) from federal returns is capped at $10k for property taxes under the current Trump tax plan.
Prior to that, the cap on property taxes was not there for SALT. Downtown, near north side and other cites (NYC's Manhattan) really got a kicking since those places see heavy five and even six figure taxes on their homes. Really. Some places in Lincoln Park (just a sample) pay $60k to $80k a year in property taxes for one house, after an appeal is had to lower those. Ouch! They cannot deduct all but $10k from federal taxes; the rest is gone. Add in TIFs for much of the city and now a 10% add on? Even the upper middle class and some rich don't have endless pockets when you are getting taxed twice in de facto effect.

The cities portion is relatively small, and property taxes rate in Chicago is low compared to the suburbs and surrounding areas.

yes, but if you really look deep you will find that the police and fire pensions offer the least of pay of all of the pension funds. The teachers, the other city workers, the alderman, all have better pensions and all have a substantial cost of living raise, every year. The cops the firemen do not. And, Chicago's police officers have the worst pension of all law enforcement officers in the state. Yes, you seem so anti-police and insist no one is sleeping safe in their beds. Well, despite the headlines, Chicago is safer then it has been since the 60's. There are more fallen police stars on the wall then in the city of New York. So, "BUB", GFY. Yes we signed up for the job knowing the work hours and the risks, but we also expect to be compensated for that. It seems,. there are fewer people like us who actually want this job.

That is funny. Ive been paying double towards my pension. Money gets taken out of my check and since i have to live in the city i have to pay all the foolish taxes. Also joe public doesnt pay for the fop. The monies are taken out of patrolmans pay check.
