No Bulletproof Glass
How much could it possibly cost to equip police stations with Lexan or something similar?
- No one was hurt Friday after a bullet pierced a window of a police station in the Austin neighborhood when multiple people in a dispute fired shots at each other.
Two males were in custody after their group of four argued with a concealed carry license holder and one of them fired shots, CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.
The concealed carry holder took out their own gun and returned fire, he said.
The shooting happened about 7:45 p.m. near the Austin 15th District police station in the 5700 block of West Madison Street, police said. A bullet had pierced a window of the station but did not strike anyone.
Of course, supplying police stations with anything that might make them more resistant to attacks....or stray rounds, is too much to ask. Kind of like how all the new stations were built with glass enclosed lobbies that will be abattoirs should someone ever set off a IED nearby.

Since they didn't do it correctly in the first place, every window in the front of these new stations should be scheduled for replacement. It's a safety issue and it'll cost the city more with the injuries that will happen over the years than the cost of fixing them now. An ounce of prevention comes to mind...
What the hell were these idiots that designed these buildings thinking? I guess they weren't, now were they?
Now, no Desk Personnel are safe!
Just remember, any bullet proof glass installed has an expiration date.
Sunlight will degrade its strength.
Have you checked the expiration date of your personal armor too?
Please take care of your equipment.
"Kind of like how all the new stations were built with glass enclosed lobbies that will be abattoirs should someone ever set off a IED nearby."
Lessons like are always seem commonsense, but are finally wtitten in blood.
abbatoirs ? good one scc, had to look that one up. keep up the great literary work. in my travels i see new justice centers being built all over the country and most of them have no windows on the first floor. got to give it to chicago transparency..............my god thes people are idiots !
Thank shanks, he wanted nothing to give the idea cops were girding themselves against the surrounding neighborhoods. He wanted to portray a feeling of openness, welcoming and accepting of the hood.
We need more guns in our country. The concealed carry gun holder defended himself. Everyone should be armed. A good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun.
Lexan isn’t the answer. You need Armorlite.
As others have pointed out, Lexan breaks down in sunlight. In 5 years, it’ll be as fragile as glass.
Besides, CPS tried Lexan windows in schools 40+ years ago.
Even brought out a pitcher from the Sox to show how it couldn’t be broken.
Ghetto rats took less than a month to figure out that all they needed to do was hose it down with Ronsonol and light it up.
FYI
3M makes window films that will make regular glass shatter resistant. You can apply it to existing windows.
It ain't perfect, but it is better than nothing.
abattoirs
I had to look that up
Did you buy a thesaurus with your beer money?
IF home less JUNKIES can sleep on the floor all night at a police station do you really think bullet proof glass is an option?
And they constructed a 75 ft desk and cavernous lobby to make sure it's extra undefendable in the event things go bad.
Need to put up "Safe Zone" signs!
No one outside of the police care.
Wow i always presumed bulletproof glass. Very scary.
Thank you God all were protected.
In my station we have had people (and I use the term "people" lightly) reach over and knock monitors off the desk. Had one that reached over and stole a coppers bag. Also had a couple actually jump up onto the desk and try to get at the Officers. Maggie Daley really knew what she was doing when she gave her input into the design of the new stations.
Oh, I have seen numerous Officers from outside Departments just shake their heads in disbelief at the design of the lobby and how easy it is to get at Officers or into the station.
I knew the meaning of “abattoir” (one B) because the word was used by Monty Python. After the academy I was assigned to 014. The station then was built in I think 1909. There were some windows but mostly very thick brick wall. Then the new 014 was built. A fishbowl with disco lights. Said to be open and inviting to the public. The newer stations are even worse. .

I guess they either a) didnt think safety first, b) didnt anticipate today's war zone lifestyle and/or c) city dodnt wish to pay and hates LEO's. Probably al of the above. Remember most live in glass houses where no one throws stones.
I had to look up that word (you know which one)

Hey, most cops body armor is long expired.
Many are still wearing their first vest.
Perhaps during a Spring or Fall inspection, those panels should be checked.
Just like the lots in which the community can come and go as they please. Like Thor Soderberg wasn’t a big enough wake up call. We mean nothing to the city. They would rather please the community.
After frisking, one had two paks of Lemonheads.
To his credit, he did offer to share.
Sorry, kid. We don't have room for your safety in the budget. Now go our there and generate some activity.
The desk are is supposed to be wrapped with kevlar panels but I think all our facilities should have the desk enclosed with bulletproof glasses the burbs. Desk people really dont pay attention to who is coming into the station. This is a tragedy waiting to happen.
Dana Alexander retiring as Chief of IAD after a few months and heading to OEMC,Heard Special ED is pissed for not telling him about this move,WHEEEEZZZZEEEE was also so mad that she had to take 4 hours on the end because she came in 2 hours late....UNREAL
Send in the merit detectives to further investigate!
The irony is that it was the concealed carry bullet that went through the window.
Be careful you will give the community a new gibmes dat bulletproof glass.
Not to detract from the point of this post, but is that what passes for writing in the Slum Times these days?

017 district parking lot has to be the worst in the city. Pot holes so big you need a bridge to get over. City is so stupid. Instead of paving the lot they’d rather pay out thousands $$$ in damage to vehicles. It’s the Chicago way.
Dickhead Daley, the gift that keeps on giving.
Bullet proof glass should be installed on exterior windows and around the desk area .
Another way to keep police safe from harm , disease .No homeless allowed sleeping in lobby , open up field house gyms .
Install a buzzer , no one enters police station without being buzzed in , they would have their own enclosed waiting room until officers are ready to wait on them .
Public schools in Chicago get the fancy glass... Not police stations.

Abattoirs; word for the day. Anybody NOT have to look that one up?
Go to any other police station in America and it’s locked up tight with all kinds of safety precautions for their police officers. Here in Chicago the police stations are like tents. Wide open. It’s shameful. Many departments aren’t even open to the public during the night shifts.
Speaking of 015, what the hell is going on over there? They just had 6 people (4 po's, 2 sgts) jump ship on the last transfer order. On top of that, nobody bid for the two openings in 015. Cato and his crew seem to be finishing the work of Babs in destroying a once proud district. Good luck boys and girls.
Heard Capt Caps in 015 go over their zone and do a dispersal. When asked by the dispatcher how many he was dispersing he responded "FIFTEEN." He must've spent the rest of his night completing the 15 ISRs as required by general order.
Most suburban police stations are fortresses.
Chicago builds our stations the complete opposite, not unlike Swiss cheese.

Actually I think that came from Shanks boss, Maggie Daley.
https://www.policeone.com/mental-health/articles/484674006-Calif-PDs-fear-suicide-by-cop-cases-So-theyve-stopped-responding-to-some-calls/
Think of all the money ShortShanks spent on iron (eye-ron) fencing and planters around the city, close and rebuilt few libraries and public skrools, close and rebuilt a few Districts,
As for the new Districts, they went through the expense of door code locks, overhead garage doors for the DC’s and Lt’s personal cars, useless interior 3 ft. high Stainless Steel gates, granite counters all around the desk areas, lockup processing and CAPS cubicle areas and of course those giant floor to ceiling panels of tinted window glass on all these stations too. Buying safety partitions is just too offensive to the commurnity, but gating off and locking the CAPS doe is ok.
As for the CDTP misdemeanor community understanding incident (a Cook Co reclassified UUW).
Did the shooter surrender or was there a he’s running holding his waist chase?
I’m all for CC but I don’t think this wasn’t just a nonchalant, friendly street encounter amongst community members.
Ain’t nobody knows nuffins all over again.
I hope ISP does a little digging too.
I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts that the CCL has a bi-polar diagnosis and still was granted a FOID/CCL.
Having a disability means a little extra in that monthly gubmint entitlement and there’s plenty being doled out on the west side.
The Big Johnson’s District Damage Dashboard will reflect this incident once approval is granted by the CookCo Public Offenders Office.
Police stations?
Aren't those buildings just warming centers and cooling centers for bums?
Yet they will supply top of the line free everything to the ghetto dwelling non producers, and illegal aliens. This country needs a reset.

Nah...
The city will save money on the back end when they tell
injured Policemen when some sloping forehead lights
off a VBIED in front of one of these "The Public Needs To
See What You Cops Are Doing" lobbies, "You're not IOD cuz
you weren't performing a Police action so get back to work."
You're welcome...

Must have been Wilbur Wood and his knuckle ball.
While we're on subject of 015.
Any reason why NOBODY bid to 015? POs went to 011, 006, and 025. But none to 15.

You would think the city would give officers a annual uniform allowance to replace the long expired vests
Un-fucking-believable.
When you walk into the PD here in my town (lobby only open 8-5, M-F) you are in a 5’x10’ box -
Behind you is the door you came in (reinforced steel with keypad); to the right, a blank, brick wall; ahead, another reinforced steel door with keypad; to your left, brick wall from floor to counter and Armorlite from the counter to the ceiling. The ceiling is a 12” thick, reinforced concrete slab that was cast on site and dropped in place with a crane before the roof went on.
The only windows in the building face the parking lot. They are 12” tall by 36” wide Armorlite and the sills are 6’ above the ground.
BTW - I live in a dinky little town of 5100 people east of OKC.
Out here, a high crime weekend is TWO loose dogs.
Our property taxes are less than 1.2% of market value ($380k house, $4400 taxes)

...and yeah, we love our cops.

The city should have drawers or cabinets behind the desk so officers have a place to keep their bags. It’s not right they have to keep their bags in an area where someone can reach over the counter and steal them
I love when the deputy chiefs stand behind ReRun when he’s on tv, they look so miserable
If I remember correctly, the glass windows were discussed as a safety issue when 006 was being built and people were informed the street level windows were going to be bulletproof, or so I thought. Anyway to check the original plans to see what the specifications were and see if we got what was paid for?
How about the girl who was shot @4:52AM while sleeping
on her couch?
Dayon mass shooter was brought down by shots
that went thru the seams of his armor. Then again,
it's not likely you're gonna face 5 to 6 Dudes who
have extensive range time.
It's like the old cliche with jails.
Jails are built to keep people in,
not to keep people out.

I’m not sure I agree with the premise that police stations should be designed with a fortress mentality as if it were constantly under attack as in a war zone. This wasn’t an attack on a police station, but is representative of a problem that needs to be dealt with city-wide - not just in places where police are present
Let me guess, the 'dispute' involved either gang signs or an attempted forcible removal of the CCL's shit.
While we're on the subject, can the cities and burbs get on with it and start fortifying the schools too? Those things have been built like fish bowls since the late 90s all across the country. As you say, bombs are kind of a big deal and it's a minor miracle that none of the omnicidal maniacs that have attacked schools in recent years was sufficiently aware of 20th century history to understand that bombs are much more destructive than guns. Or current events, for that matter...hardly a month goes by that some Muslim extremist doesn't suicide bomb 50-100 people in one of the countries closer to their sphere of influence.
015, More are trying to leave 011 where there are more fixed posts than beats.

There is, and they have lockers.
All of our police stations are a BAD design with the entire fronts being all glass construction. The front desk floors should be higher than the lobby floors were citizens enter the building. Camera's should be in all station lobbies.
Sorry, only Groots home is scheduled for bulletproofing this year.......
public doesn't care about the violence. News covered phil mickelson almost missing his tee.
Our police stations are designed with TOO much glass construction at the front entrances. The floors should be higher behind the desk area and the floors should be lower in the lobby were the citizens stand. Camera's should be in every station lobby.
I heard the word used in the movie the watchmen..
Think of early retirement and huge pensions as bullet proof glass!
Check out Skokie PD station.
i have been in many suburban and small town stations around the country and like the man said they are fortresses. steel and concrete and armored tiny widows. buzzed in and out and limited hours and not intruder friendly. ive seen many in towns of 12-20 k people in areas with low taxes. you just know these vennecco built cpd stations cost a fortune but they cant afford any common sense safety features? ive heard for 20 years about the coming shtf and civil war etc, these stations will be the first places abandoned and will prob become blm and antifa hq,s. idiots

Nehru jacket? Just how old do you think the readers here are? That's like when I was a kid and I'm over mandatory retirement age now.
DIDNT we learn from the 1st terminator!
"...officers should have drawers where they can keep their bags..."
Solutions: 1. Travel lighter.
2. Use a locker.
My Nehru jacket is in my closet, right next to my Bleeding Madras shirt.
1968. My dad bought matching Nehru jackets for my brother and me. Lime green. We looked groovy.
Short memories,
Look at 024 it has been shot up at least 5 times in my 30 years on job.
Then look at 011 it was hit several times most hitting bricks.
Bet more have been hit but news never tells the stories
Nehru jacket? Hey gramps, you're not too old to go
to the range. The purpose of this (timeless) blog is to
educate. We don't dumb down to accommodate a
certain reader demographic. I've seen plenty of
WWII references here. By all means, don't go see
or stream "The Irishman" because it tells the story
of a WWII MP who went on to become a hit man
for the Buffalino Crime Family, and supposedly
was the guy who whacked Jimmy Hoffa. Hoffa
came before Nehru jackets.
Almost every store in “the community” keeps its employees behind bulletproof glass.
Not so for CPD stations . Maggie Daley wanted CPD Station’s to seem open and welcoming.
Nehru was a good prime minister of India.they
I worked in an old station that opened in the 30’s and then that station was replaced by a new cookie cuter one in 2008.
In some ways the old station from the 30’s was safer than the newer ones.
The newer ones are very much Swiss Cheese.
Talk about ass backwards. Thanks Shanks and Maggie.
City cares more about "da community" feelings than your safety. It's cheaper to bury you than to build/make safer workplace.
Just like the old days in 015 when the Rose was there instead of the new station.

I have a madras shirt plus a madras cap too. Way better then common-man plaid.
No mood ring sadly... That is just way too retro. "Guaranteed to Bleed" (the gimmick of the madras shirt printed on the label, not the Chicago city motto)
Wait for this one: Camel hair sports coat! Fashion is cyclical.
Final bonus: FIVE BUTTON single breast sports coat! European style for the Windy City!

It was sarcasm. If you leave your stuff out there, what did you expect with all the idiots in the lobby
014 is a death trap. Anyone can walk into 014 and shoot up the place. The only desk exits are at the sides of the long counter. All sitting ducks. The sergeants room in the back has no rear door. Very dangerous if a real situation happens and a bad design of the station.
Don’t hear the word abattoir every day of the week. Nice!
