No Bulletproof Glass

How much could it possibly cost to equip police stations with Lexan or something similar?
  • No one was hurt Friday after a bullet pierced a window of a police station in the Austin neighborhood when multiple people in a dispute fired shots at each other.

Two males were in custody after their group of four argued with a concealed carry license holder and one of them fired shots, CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

The concealed carry holder took out their own gun and returned fire, he said.

The shooting happened about 7:45 p.m. near the Austin 15th District police station in the 5700 block of West Madison Street, police said. A bullet had pierced a window of the station but did not strike anyone.
Of course, supplying police stations with anything that might make them more resistant to attacks....or stray rounds, is too much to ask. Kind of like how all the new stations were built with glass enclosed lobbies that will be abattoirs should someone ever set off a IED nearby.

Since they didn't do it correctly in the first place, every window in the front of these new stations should be scheduled for replacement. It's a safety issue and it'll cost the city more with the injuries that will happen over the years than the cost of fixing them now. An ounce of prevention comes to mind...

What the hell were these idiots that designed these buildings thinking? I guess they weren't, now were they?

Lexan isn’t the answer. You need Armorlite.
As others have pointed out, Lexan breaks down in sunlight. In 5 years, it’ll be as fragile as glass.

Besides, CPS tried Lexan windows in schools 40+ years ago.
Even brought out a pitcher from the Sox to show how it couldn’t be broken.
Ghetto rats took less than a month to figure out that all they needed to do was hose it down with Ronsonol and light it up.

In my station we have had people (and I use the term "people" lightly) reach over and knock monitors off the desk. Had one that reached over and stole a coppers bag. Also had a couple actually jump up onto the desk and try to get at the Officers. Maggie Daley really knew what she was doing when she gave her input into the design of the new stations.

Oh, I have seen numerous Officers from outside Departments just shake their heads in disbelief at the design of the lobby and how easy it is to get at Officers or into the station.

I knew the meaning of “abattoir” (one B) because the word was used by Monty Python. After the academy I was assigned to 014. The station then was built in I think 1909. There were some windows but mostly very thick brick wall. Then the new 014 was built. A fishbowl with disco lights. Said to be open and inviting to the public. The newer stations are even worse. .

Think of all the money ShortShanks spent on iron (eye-ron) fencing and planters around the city, close and rebuilt few libraries and public skrools, close and rebuilt a few Districts,
As for the new Districts, they went through the expense of door code locks, overhead garage doors for the DC’s and Lt’s personal cars, useless interior 3 ft. high Stainless Steel gates, granite counters all around the desk areas, lockup processing and CAPS cubicle areas and of course those giant floor to ceiling panels of tinted window glass on all these stations too. Buying safety partitions is just too offensive to the commurnity, but gating off and locking the CAPS doe is ok.

As for the CDTP misdemeanor community understanding incident (a Cook Co reclassified UUW).
Did the shooter surrender or was there a he’s running holding his waist chase?
I’m all for CC but I don’t think this wasn’t just a nonchalant, friendly street encounter amongst community members.
Ain’t nobody knows nuffins all over again.
I hope ISP does a little digging too.
I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts that the CCL has a bi-polar diagnosis and still was granted a FOID/CCL.
Having a disability means a little extra in that monthly gubmint entitlement and there’s plenty being doled out on the west side.

The Big Johnson’s District Damage Dashboard will reflect this incident once approval is granted by the CookCo Public Offenders Office.

Un-fucking-believable.

When you walk into the PD here in my town (lobby only open 8-5, M-F) you are in a 5’x10’ box -
Behind you is the door you came in (reinforced steel with keypad); to the right, a blank, brick wall; ahead, another reinforced steel door with keypad; to your left, brick wall from floor to counter and Armorlite from the counter to the ceiling. The ceiling is a 12” thick, reinforced concrete slab that was cast on site and dropped in place with a crane before the roof went on.

The only windows in the building face the parking lot. They are 12” tall by 36” wide Armorlite and the sills are 6’ above the ground.

BTW - I live in a dinky little town of 5100 people east of OKC.
Out here, a high crime weekend is TWO loose dogs.
Our property taxes are less than 1.2% of market value ($380k house, $4400 taxes)
Average response time is under 3 minutes 24/7/365.
...and yeah, we love our cops.

I’m not sure I agree with the premise that police stations should be designed with a fortress mentality as if it were constantly under attack as in a war zone. This wasn’t an attack on a police station, but is representative of a problem that needs to be dealt with city-wide - not just in places where police are present

Let me guess, the 'dispute' involved either gang signs or an attempted forcible removal of the CCL's shit.

While we're on the subject, can the cities and burbs get on with it and start fortifying the schools too? Those things have been built like fish bowls since the late 90s all across the country. As you say, bombs are kind of a big deal and it's a minor miracle that none of the omnicidal maniacs that have attacked schools in recent years was sufficiently aware of 20th century history to understand that bombs are much more destructive than guns. Or current events, for that matter...hardly a month goes by that some Muslim extremist doesn't suicide bomb 50-100 people in one of the countries closer to their sphere of influence.

No mood ring sadly... That is just way too retro. "Guaranteed to Bleed" (the gimmick of the madras shirt printed on the label, not the Chicago city motto)

Wait for this one: Camel hair sports coat! Fashion is cyclical.
Final bonus: FIVE BUTTON single breast sports coat! European style for the Windy City!

The city should have drawers or cabinets behind the desk so officers have a place to keep their bags. It’s not right they have to keep their bags in an area where someone can reach over the counter and steal them

There is, and they have lockers.

It was sarcasm. If you leave your stuff out there, what did you expect with all the idiots in the lobby

014 is a death trap. Anyone can walk into 014 and shoot up the place. The only desk exits are at the sides of the long counter. All sitting ducks. The sergeants room in the back has no rear door. Very dangerous if a real situation happens and a bad design of the station.
