Off Duty Officer Killed
Headed home after work....and his car and gun are missing:
A Chicago police officer was shot to death two days before his 31st birthday on the Southwest Side early Sunday, authorities said. Just before 3 a.m., paramedics responded to the 3100 block of West 56th Street for an officer shot, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
The officer, a 30-year-old man, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died due to his injuries, Supt. Larry Snelling told reporters outside of the University of Chicago Sunday morning. The officer was heading home after his shift when he was shot multiple times, Snelling said. He worked for the department for six years.
“We lost one of our own today,” Snelling said. “He was just a great officer, great human being.”
He didn’t confirm that the shooting was the result of a carjacking but did say the officer’s vehicle was taken.
Deepest sympathies to his family, friends and co-workers. More info will be forthcoming when it becomes available.

Absolutely ridiculous, of course it was a freaking carjacking at 0300hrs. I hate it so much, we gotta crack down on this stuff AND have the courts actually follow through. When you refuse to acknowledge or effectively punish those who commit violent crimes, it emboldens the criminals. This city has given criminals no reason not to shoot the police. However, when are we going to start posting the court officials names who allow these REPEAT offenders to consistently walk away time and time again. It's Illinois. Even life without parole doesn't guarantee they won't be out on the streets again. Death may be too good for cop killers, but as long as torture is illegal, it's the best option. Public execution would be a nice way to send a message too. Maybe a firing squad with bad aim.

This is completely ridiculous. It's highly likely, given the area where this occurred, that the offenders are Hispanic. It's still very possible they are black, since their carjackings and shootings have spread across the entire city and suburbs. But to say Hispanic gangbangers don't do such things is just idiotic. From the limited info I heard, this officer was wearing his uniform, but it was under a jacket, so the offenders may not have even known he was the police, which is what I'm sure they'll say when caught.
