Sheriff Deputy Fundraiser

A tragedy while on vacation:

  • The family of a Cook County sheriff’s deputy who was hit and killed by a stray bullet while on vacation in Turks and Caicos this month has launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral costs.

Deputy Shamone Duncan, 50, was celebrating her sister’s 40th birthday on the rooftop of the Aziza Restaurant & Lounge in Grace Bay when she was hit by a stray bullet about 10 p.m. Jan. 18. A man was killed, and a 29-year old man was wounded in the shooting.

“She was a beacon of strength, compassion and leadership, touching countless lives in her community and beyond,” the GoFundMe stated. “Above all, Shamone was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend.”

Duncan was a 20-year veteran of the county’s Department of Corrections — “a testament to her unwavering dedication to justice and her passion for protecting others,” her family wrote in the fundraiser.

Sympathies to family, friends and co-workers.

News accounts state that when the shooting started (or was about to start), people yelled "Get Down!" Unfortunately, the victim stood up.

There's parts of the Caribbean that are just Englewood with palm trees and white-sand beaches. (And their police somehow do less work than I do.) No matter how spectacular the natural beauty there's a reason all the windows are covered in iron bars and their policemen carry sub-machine guns. Hope this deputy's family wasn't too traumatized...

I try to avoid countries with active Death Squads myself. Like Mexico, for instance. About twenty years ago I was stopped and robbed by the police. It used to cost about 20 bucks to make the grift. This time the guy emptied my wallet. I then realized he could have taken me out to the desert and hacked off my arms with machetes if he felt like. Left the next day and never went back.
