No More Free Fests?

Golly, this sounds familiar:

  • Chicago’s neighborhood street festivals — a staple of summertime in the city — are struggling to survive, according to a new coalition of 20 festival organizers that includes Chicago’s Pride Fest, Taste of Randolph and the Square Roots Fest in Lincoln Square.

    The organizers have joined forces to sound the alarm on rising operating costs and diminishing entry donations. Those two factors, the group said, have made the model unsustainable.

    The coalition called “Save Our Street Fests,” which went public with its concerns Friday, also includes nonprofit street festivals such as Wicker Park Fest, Northalsted Market Days, Lincoln Square Ravenswood Apple Fest and several others.

When we wrote about it just a week ago, we concentrated on parades:

  • spare the neighborhoods - Grant Park for all parades, ethnic, cultural, alternative lifestyle...every single one;
  • staging area is Columbus, Randolph to Monroe;
  • parade route is Monroe to 1100 South;
  • disbanding area is 1100 to Roosevelt;
  • in a pinch, you could even end parades across Roosevelt at the Museum Campus or toward McFetridge (plenty of room for buses);
  • encourage the use of Soldier Field and Grant Park / Millennium Park lots for attendees. You'll sell them out within the first few hours for the big events.

A smart politician (haha - sorry) could probably figure out what parks and neighborhoods could be utilized for festivals without the massive disruptions the parades have wrought. Maybe even use a bunch of the under-utilized high school campuses. Lots of these have built in parking areas and gigantic flat spaces for use.

Or just cancel anything that can't fund itself - the days of the free ride are rapidly approaching un-sustainability.

The problem is fest fatigue and competition for time and less disposable income. 22 fests on that web page competing with concerts, parades, block parties, family events, ball games, back yard time, etc. $10 beers don't help.

What Mayor is going to get full credit for killing Chicago? It’s on life support and at some point the plug is going to get pulled.

This is a perfect example of the result of people moving out of Chicago and relocating into other states never to return for safety reasons. Not worth going to these festivals when the city can’t provide basic safety precautions. It’s much more enticing to go to another state or suburb where there is security that can actually do their job to make people feel safe and not have to worry about getting shot or killed.
The downward spiral continues ladies and gents.

Along with the free ride comes bad actors as well. That part is why the socialist community activists always end up balking when they want to charge. Not that long ago, someone tried to start an alternative to the alternative lifestyle Pride Day Festivities up in Rogers Park. The organizer just wanted something less chaotic & so they tried to impose an entry fee to keep out miscreants. That got quashed before it even happened. I think it was the first and last of that.

"Neighborhood" fests have not been about showcasing the neighborhoods they're in for a long time now. They may use them as a theme but they're not a showcase for local business. And should not be allowed to cut off access to local businesses.

Good Riddens!! If you want a party, keep it to a neighborhood block party. Pride Parade is nothing but a pain in the ass and is waaay to big to block streets and disrupt traffic for miles. More and more made up festivals popping up every year and not enough police, since we cant even man beat cars anymore. Cut these festivals and save money..we did without them years ago and will survive without them now!

When you have a mayor that drives people away. Does nothing about crime. Bashes police. Kills businesses.puts illegals and the CTU first. That’s what happens. And that’s also why he has a 6% approval rating.

I absolutely agree that any event that cannot pay for itself, including reimbursing the police department for security costs, should be ended. As a taxpayer I don’t think I should have to fund every ethnic or special interest party someone decides to throw.

Inclusiveness is key to success. Community organizer can provide free or at no cost transportation to underserved communities in need from the west and south sides. Hate had no home here. Churches can be used as staging areas similar to organizing voters for political rallies or conducting non-police roundups to vote early. Imagine the diversity and cultural exchange each sharing their cultural heritage. co existing side by side forming that partnership. Government entitlements can meet gig economy affluence not on a bumper sticker, but in a grass roots coalition unifying type setting. Remember, diversity is our strength and cultural awareness is key for sustainability in our democracy.

These festivals are in upscale areas. Not sure why they are so expensive to operate. Is it government permits/ fees or could it be liability insurance? Or transitory inflation, lingering effects Bidenomics or just too much government on so many levels? I would think these densely populated communities would have enough discretionary disposable income after through the roof Cook County property taxes, a multitude of excessive local taxes/fees, state and federal taxation by the boatloads curtail the individual support for local festivities. Excessive forever rising taxation has engaged the emergency financial brakes on their entertainment spending. If the well off in these communities are taking a beating, imagine being a nine to five lunch bucket Joe. On a lighter note, my family and friends have attended several of these festivals and had a wonderful time.

I call bullshit. These operators are losing the federal grift money they were using to fund these bullshit parties. Now they want to charge admission instead of asking for a "suggested" donation. The federal "nonprofit" grift is over. No more bread and circuses...pay for your own party.

Cash money folks and cash money allows for everyone to underreport income, everyone gets a taste.

A few summers, I did off-duty security for (Chicago) Special Events Management. They hired the police not to provide security for the street fairs but to guard donations at the gates/ticket booths and make sure the volunteer cashiers didn't have big paydays.

Tons of cash money for these event companies and they made even more money on keeping all the tips intended for people working beer tents and trucks along with being the exclusive seller of water and ice to businesses with booths at the events for them to resell to fest goers.

Really no way to track all the cash money flowing at these events on public streets.

THAILAND has unveiled the world's first true robo-cop capable of detecting and stopping crime.

...It can also withstand a whopping four tonnes of impact damage to prevent criminals from trying to cover their tracks and kill it.

Despite the RT-G only being able to reach a fairly slow speed of 22mph, it does weigh a back-breaking 125kg.

The RT-G can also be equipped with non-fatal police gear like net guns, tear gas sprayers, some grenades, loudspeakers and sound wave dispersal devices.

Something tells me the money that was allocated to festivals was diverted to cover the costs associated with cultivating new migrant democrat voters. A democrat proven strategy: Introduce a minuscule festival tax. Later, hide a drastic increase in one of those thousand page legislative bill they pass in each session. Who actually reads all those thousand page bills before they are codified into law. Call it an omnibus bill confusing the public. And then scare the public creating fear of a government shutdown if the emergency legislation isn't passed. The go with the program masses won't figure it out until its too late.

All parades should go down Madison from Pulaski to Austin kicking off at 8pm. Zero security and unlimited drinking and weed. Let nature take its course. Survival of the fittest. Unlimited floats and no end time.

Let it ride.

Just lots of remote cameras to watch and record the carnage.

Would be epic

When Burke took office in early December, the jail’s population was around 5,200, having increased slightly at the end of Foxx’s term, according to data from the sheriff’s office. As of Friday, the population had grown to just over 5,600.

The sheriff’s office plans to produce a monthly analysis with the goal of tracking the impact of Burke’s policies on the jail, according to the first such report in March.

The mayor was on tv today sounding like he was from DOGE signing executive orders.

The Chicago budget has grown exponentially in the years following the Coronavirus pandemic. In just five years from 2019 to 2024, the city added over $6 billion to its expenditures, a whopping 58% increase. The Chicago budget has been mismanaged for decades and is constantly facing structural deficits.

With an influx of billions in federal funding for the COVID-19 pandemic, the city had a chance to remedy these issues and set a course for financial stability. Instead, city government decided to take on costly projects and build more debt. Now with funds running out, options are limited to close a looming $982.4 million budget shortfall.
