More Democratic Fantasies

Senator Harry Reid has said that the President and Vice President should apologize for the actions of their aides in the CIA leak case. They should also pledge not to pardon anyone convicted in the investigation.

What?

Firstly, no one has been convicted of anything yet. For all we know, Scooter will be found innocent of all charges.

Secondly, why would Bush and Cheney have to apologize for the conduct of another person who appears to be over 21? Maybe Libby ought to apologize to Bush and Cheney for putting them in an unintended position, but to whom does Harry Reid expect Bush and Cheney to proffer this apology? Probably seventy percent of the American public couldn't pick Scooter out of a line up and couldn't identify his job title. If Bush has to apologize for Scooter, we want the democrats to apologize for Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Dick Durbin and the Clintons.

Thirdly, we'll spare lefty and shady of the time explaining away Clinton's last minute pardons of just about every administration official who sneezed in the presence of an FBI agent. Suffice it to say that the leader of the minority party in Congress ought not be making outrageous demands on the President or his people.

UPDATE: Now Harry Reid says Rove should resign. What a maroon.

I asked this in another post, but I don't know the answer...how many people did Clinton (without Lewinsky in his lap) pardon at the end of his term, and why?

176 Executive Clemency Orders(140 pardons, 36 commutations) were issued on his last day in office.

I think the final "11th hour" number of pardons was 176. He pardoned his brother Roger on a cocaine charge, that was one for the record books.

From the Washington Post: "More than half the 457 pardons he (Clinton) granted came during his last month in office." Good, thorough article on the topic.

SCC is right: The double standard is atrocious. Republicans can nominate someone and, right away the Democrats start crying that it's going to "divide the country!" Where is the outcry from Republicans when the Dems pull in some quasi-Marxist for a top post? There is none - we simply want whatever is good for the country. When David Souter and Ruth Bader Ginsburg were going through the appointment hearings, no one raised an eyebrow when they confessed to being pro-Choice. But if a conservative says he wants to dismantle Roe v. Wade, Oh my God! The Leftist, Liberals start hyperventilating.

True Dat!

Hey M, presidential pardons are something ALL chief executives have done not just Democrats.

Among those Clinton should not have pardoned was Marc RICH, but then again some of the persons issued by Republican presidents should be examined.

Let's see, off the top of my head there was:

BUSH I never should have issued a pardon to that convicted heroin trafficker, whose name I cannot recall. Remember that one buddy? BUSH I also pardoned several persons convicted on improper cotributions to various GOP campaigns. Don't forget he also pardoned Caspar Weinberger.

RAY-GUN (oops,REAGAN) pardoned Yankee owner George STEINBRENNER for improper contributions to the NIXON campaign.

FORD pardoned NIXON (enought said on that one). He also pardoned TOYKO ROSE. What do those flag wavers think of that one?

NIXON pardoned Jimmy HOFFA the union leader hated by rich Republicans.

Presidential pardons are issued to the rich and, or powerful. It is class warfare and working folks like you and I are included in that club.

Should I even bother replying to you? I usually don't simply because I know it will not make any difference in your opinions. Not to flog a dead horse but we all know that every president pardons. Prez-Pardons go back to Thomas Jefferson. The point is that Clinton did what NO OTHER president did - absolved criminals simply for political ties and/or PAC funding. Also, more than 30 of the 177 pardons and commutations granted by Bubba on his last day did not go through Justice Dept procedures - that shows he was doing an end-around with some last-minute favors. You bring up Weinberg and Nixon? Nixon was an altarboy compared to LBJ! And Jimmy Hoffa was a labor organizer - big deal. Did a Republican president ever pardon stone-cold, murderous terrorists? Clinton did. He pardoned FALN thugs. Eventhough you & your ilk 'poo-poo' how tough we are on Clinton, he deserves all of it. It's documented that he damaged this country in ways we are only beginning to recognize. It's truly a shame that the Left doesn't recognize that.

Reagan, Bush, Bush Jr... ...deja vu all over again...

BUSH PARDONS WEINBERGER, FIVE OTHERS TIED TO IRAN-CONTRA

(Six super X-mas presents to illegal proxy warriors who gave in to terrorists holding hostages... why do you Righties HATE AMERICA'S JUSTICE SYSTEM SO?) (And watch "Dubya" do what Daddy did when the "PlameGate" heat rises... lots more "True Patriots" gonna walk to get a BUSH's tit out of the wringer. "Justice"- feh!)

By Dian McDonald USIA White House Correspondent Washington -- 24 Dec 1992

President Bush December 24th granted pardons to former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger (click here)
and five other individuals for their conduct related to the Iran-Contra affair.

Bush said Weinberger -- who had been scheduled to go on trial in Washington January 5 on charges related to Iran-Contra -- was a "true American patriot," who had served with "distinction" in a series of public positions since the late 1960s.

The president also pardoned five other persons who already had pleaded guilty or had been indicted or convicted in connection with the Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages investigation. They were Elliott Abrams (here and here), a former assistant secretary of state for Inter-American affairs; former National Security Adviser Robert McFarlane (here); and Duane Clarridge (here), Alan Fiers (here), and Clair George (here and here), all former employees of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Weinberger had been charged by independent counsel Lawrence Walsh with four counts of lying to congressional Iran-Contra investigators in 1987 and to Walsh's prosecutors in 1990. His case involved allegations that he had concealed from congressional investigators his personal notes that detailed events related to Iran-Contra and which reportedly undermined what then-President Reagan said about the origins and operations of the covert arms-for-hostages dealings. Weinberger had pleaded not guilty and said he was being unfairly prosecuted.

Although a president has unlimited pardon powers, it is highly unusual to pardon someone before trial and conviction. The best-known precedent -- following the Watergate political scandal during the Nixon administration -- was former President Ford's pardon in 1974 of former President Nixon, who was never indicted.

Bush said the prosecutions of the persons he was pardoning on Christmas Eve represent "what I believe is a profoundly troubling development in the political and legal climate of our country: the criminalization of policy differences." (Sound familiar? - the recent lock-step cries of "This (PlameGate) is "The Criminalization of Politics" ad infinitum by the Righty Talking Heads... scumbags)

You conservatives & liberals make me sick! Bush this, Clinton that, each one trying to prove the other is a bigger crook.PATHETIC!! Don't you fools realize Republicans and Democrats are two sides of the same coin? This whole scenario is designed to divide and conquer America. While you numbnuts fight over insignificant differances;conservative/liberal white/black citizen/immigrant hawk/dove, this entire country is being dismantled right under your noses. Jobs and entire industries are being shipped overseas never to return in the name of "free trade" increasing numbers of our youth are going uneducated or being UNDER or MISeducated by our public schools. The "war on drugs" has failed. Drugs are no longer just a urban (black) problem. Meth is spreading across this country like cancer in a way that crack dealers could only dream of.Too many of our young men & women are coming home in caskets or missing body parts fighting a war that was started based on innuendos and outright false information.Every year the poverty level rises for ALL Americans.People are working 10-12hrs a day and still cannot provide for their families. You guys think Bush & Clinton are different? Have you seen the news or read a paper lately? Clinton & Bush Sr. looked pretty chummy to be ideological adversaries. The name of the game is to keep common Americans fighting over trivial garbage while the top 1% of the most wealthy Americans own/control EVERYTHING. These guys are laughing all the way to the bank. (Located somewhere in the Cayman Islands.)WAKE UP! and realize this liberal/conservative rivalry is nothing but a farse. Until the average American realizes he/she is being bamboozled by the powers that be, America is headed the way of the Roman Empire.
