EXACTLY the Correct Action

If preliminary reports are correct (and note this well - preliminary MEANS preliminary - and preliminary reports are notoriously incorrect) the Air Marshals involved in today's shooting in Miami acted completely correctly and completely legally.

This guy made a threat IN THE AIR. Who did he think was going to be waiting for him at the gate, Santa Claus? No, it was going to be guys with guns. And his companion following behind screaming, "My husband! My husband!" We don't even have to dig that far to find examples of husband/wife teams of suicide bombers or escape accomplices. Bi-polar? Shouldn't have been flying unmedicated. Reaching into a bag when ordered to the ground? Too bad, so sad. When people point guns at you, especially in an airport and especially in THIS day and age, you damn well better do what they tell you to do. There is NO WAY in hell the marshals, police or SWAT is going to let this guy get into a terminal building.

We're counting down the minutes until Howard Dean or some other national democrat declares the Air Marshal service to be "stromtroopers" of some form or another and this to be shades of "nazi germany" or some other such nonsense. It's coming if it isn't out there already and it'll be all over the net today, news tonight and papers tomorrow.

Man oh man..you guys and "016". Hey..016 district ranger, you could sit in your car but guess what, what happen today is a reflection on you! It affects you, me...everybody who enforces law and carries a gun which requires split second decisions. We all know we're not going to hear too many positive feedbacks on this one. There probably is gonna be a "re-evaluation" of procedures, and major changes. I just hope "they" don't overlook the real important issue here: LET'S NO REPEAT 9/11!!! These little pain in the ass liberals and their ACLU is just gonna do just that...make it easier to take over a plane and take away authority from the air marshals...because some nut wouldn't follow verbal direction...IN A PLANE!! God help us!

Get off it, M! Why do you bring right v left into everything? I think it is a bit paranoid to think that people will come out criticizing the air marshal's actions, but to make it a political agenda is wrong.

We could say the same thing about the war in Iraq, but people have been making it a political issue since day one, especially of the leftist persuation lately.

We won't deny that the right has used the war to political ends. But the right isn't the one using it as a club against the administration or claiming that the war is lost and urging withdrawl of forces. They are using it to reshape the world and advance our national interests.

Did you read the rest of Dean's surrender speech? Pull forces out of Iraq and put them in Afghanistan and deal with Zarqawi from there - EVEN THOUGH ZARQAWI IS IN IRAQ! Rove couldn't have planned this one any better.

Mark our words Lefty; someone somewhere is going to use this against the administration, the Patriot Act, the Air Marshall service, something. That isn't paranoid, that's an informed observer of the political process.

the dept. will take your guns away so as to arm you with a taser. Because most cops shoot worse than the bad guys. and we all know that most of the police shootings are doctored cause the cop was wrong. the lawsuits is what the city fears so disarm the police they just dogs anyway.

To 5:01 I will cross that bridge when I come to it, hey if you don't like it here in the USA there is always Canada. And if you don't like the job just quit so someone else can get it that will do something. Idiots like you make me sick, but it sure is reassuring to know that you are protecting people and their families.

I'm all the way "on-board" with this- and I'm not just the Po-Po- but sky-high on Lithium too! (joking... Paul Finamore- President and Member of Hairline Creations, Inc. reference...;-)

Your first two `graphs are right on the money S.C.C.... what else could they have done in that split second? NOTHING barring possessing some "Men In Black" Super-Duper Freeze Rays or these Experimental Sticky Bombs or Bolo-Net Guns being worked on in Defense Contractor labs as we speak...

We COULD MAYBE ourselves and the Marshalls to death, shoulda-woulda-coulda-ville... and who knows, maybe some of us might have had widely varying responses to this guy in our particular work realms/beats, but bottom line these Marshall's did the job they trained for and should be completely protected from any fallout/backlash regardless of whatever final details creep out into view... a nt in McDonald's is one thing, but a guy going over the edge montioning toward a "bomb" ON a McDonnell-Douglas is a terrible spot to be in as the Officer- what real choice is there??

The Air Marshalls (unfortunately) had visions of mini-mushroom clouds in their heads, and they acted to prevent any such possibility of that- God Bless Them! I wouldn't mind hearing all the little particulars of how it took place and all- (it's too bad the guy was able to actually flee the plane; m-a-y-b-e they could have bum-rushed him if he hadn't deplaned, but not criticizing, just trying to imagine the most perfect outcome, if any...

I wonder if these Marshall's bother packing Tasers or blackjacks or Pepper (probably not allowable in the cabin!) What kind of round size does it take to successfully leave the cabin and risk depressurization in flight? For the purposes of shooting was it better that the perp exited the plane, hence less chance of other passengers/fire/explosion if their rounds strike the fuel areas of the wings, etc...

It would be nice if our own Department would hold post shooting internal briefings so we all might learn from the pro's and con's of each particular incident... probably can't for more annoying legal reasons... It would be fascinating to have a new little department intranet web site with 3-D /Flash animations/presentations created detailing the more recent incidents of C.P.D. (or other) Officers fallen in the Line of Duty; showing EXACTLY how the incident actually physically took place- and rehearsing ways to have overcome the assault against them would seem invaluable for us to educate ourselves with. They could even teach/re-enact the most valuable ones in-person for the newbies in the Academy, or put us through the paces in a new in-service training program if they ever upgraded that shooting simulator van or could upgrade the old scenario room on the second floor into the gymnasium area with more authentic props and such... and let us see the video of ourselves at home, to download as a souvenir to more fully "connect with" /learn from...

Back to today's news- I do hope these Air Marshalls don't get legally second guessed to death over it for a long time (I wonder what THIS "Round Table" process entails...!)- and yea, every single branch of the "O.J. Avis Airport Sprinter" guy's family will probably sic lawyers on this, Mental Health advocates, fine... but bring `em on... the sky copers done right with what little they knew... he was a real enough threat to kill hundred of people!

But also S.C.C., Lefty has a point about your third stanza there- try to leave the Donkeys out of this unless they stick their nose in- then tee off! You make yourself look a bit too Moonbat-ish if you invoke the Deaniac EVERY single time something happens on the National Radar... aren't there any cogent "right down the middle" blogs we all can put stock in rather Sludge, Madame Manglelangle... I'll try the Counterterrorism link, sounds more promising... but hopefully both sides can resist for a long time trying to make political hay out of today's scary, tragically necessary shoot...

It should be noted that there is already a debate in Israel regarding yesterday's suicide bombing. There, people are questioning why the police, guards or military didn't shoot the running suspect.

I'll fairly note that part of the questioning is due to the fact that the bomber didn't necessarily look Arabic.

The shoot-based-on-a-threat-only debate has been occuring at some levels here since at least the shooting in the UK subways following the subway bombings.

Today’s shooting will get an investigation and we all hope it’s a fair one. We all understand that when it comes to a terrorist incident the days on negotiations on passenger aircraft are over. I have thoughts on what I’ve heard so far but they will wait until I know more about just what happened.

I have three big gripes about the FAA, TSA and the Air Marshal program.

1. Neither the FAA nor the TSA are law enforcement agencies. There are no trained cops in the command structure and they answer to no nothing bureaucrats.

2. The Air Marshals are not trained to handle people like cops are. Cops get FTOs and learn how to de-escalate emotional situations. Cops learn how not to turn a dispute into murder and armed robbery. It’s really a learned skill. The Air Marshals should only hired after street experience in some police agency. It’s not fair to the Marshals or the public.
3. The Marshals need to learn and utilize profiling for behavior and the worthless politicians have nixed that idea altogether.

I'm not a Republican or a conservative...but I wouldn't want an Air Marshal running around with a taser, or any other non lethal incapacitators....it most unfortunate that this man was possibly ILL and unfortunate that he lost his life...but his actions required the response that was provided........This shooting like any other shooting will be investigated, which does not mean some left political agenda is afoot...

We don't want the Police on an airplane acting as a FAM. The Police are trained to use a weapon in a defensive capacity,to be used only as a last resort. FAM are trained, as they should be, to use the pistol in a more offensive capacity. A guy says he's got a bomb in his bag, a FAM smokes him. Good job. A guy tells a Police Officer he's got a bomb in his bag, the P/O will back off, form a perimeter and call for a Sgt. and/or HBT. If he was audacious enough to take a shot he'd probably miss anyway. Big difference.

I'm sure this shooting of an unarmed, wack job, with no criminal history will haunt the air marshal for the rest of his life.

It's a sad event for sure. Had this guy been on a criminal or terror mission we'd ALL be cheering. There's nothing to cheer about here. I feel bad for the guy's family and pals that will miss him.

It's looking like only the shootin' air marshal heard the word, "bomb"...

Hero my ass! The dead kook was not even on the plane when he was shot.

The "bad guy" does not even have a sheet. Can we say the same for the air marshal? They hired a load of them with lots of arrests. They had to fire the felons but kept the rest.

I wonder what the local ME is going to say about the wounds.

5:38:56....uh pardon me, but you're a horses ass! Hero...no, I won't say the marshall was a hero, but he did a heroic thing. He made a split second decision to do what needed to be done, based on what he knew at the time. It very easily could have been a bomb the idiot was reaching for, in which case the news would have reported dozens dead by inaction of Air Marshall.

I don't envy the Marshall's position, but he didn't do anything wrong. Hindsight has 20/20 vision. If you're stupid enough to say "bomb" on an airplane, and refuse to follow commands when armed peace officers are pointing guns at you, then you get shot. Too bad, so sad for him. He's nuts?? Again, too bad so sad for him.

I'd like to remember all the times I could have pulled the trigger and did not.

In 1979 I nearly shot a scumbag with a gun named Robert Gurney. He pointed a colt .357 magnum in my direction as I approached him. He dropped the gun in the nick of time as I pointed my gun at him shouting orders. After the felony review ASA did not approve stronger charges, I arrested him for misdemeanor UUW. He failed to appear in court was the BFW was issued for his arrest.

About two months later, one night officers Bob Greenwald and Jay Slade Fletcher aka Jolie Gosnel of 016 gave chase to a running subject behind Super Dawg at Milwaukee and Devon. The lost him and began to open garbage sheds looking for this man. Greenwald opens a door and was shot in the chest by Robert Gurney. Gurney caught a bullet of his own too. Both Greenwald and Gurney were rushed to Resurection Hospital where the were put in intensive care where Greenwald was forced to see his attacker accross from him for more than a week. Gurney was under police guard.

In retrospect I wish I had killed Gurney. Greenwald returned to work for a short while but suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and drank his way off the job.

The Federal Air Marshall acted appropriately, and responded as he was trained to do. However, all the "arm chair quarterbacks" are commenting on his actions with hindsight! Katie Couric (news anchor) said something to the effect of..the poor man was mentally ill (only learned hours into the investigation after examining the victims medical history and interviewing his family members).. couldn't they have shot him in the leg or something? Maybe these media people need to spend a few weeks in a ride-along in 007 or 015.

1:04:14 hit the nail on the head with Couric's remark "couldn't they have shot him in the leg?" Sure they could have, and if he really did have a bomb, he would have been able to detonate it.

As the coppers already know, if you're shooting at someone, you're trying to KILL them, that's it. Otherwise, we wouldn't be shooting.

He's a mental? That's too bad. But better to err by killing him than hesitate and let a bomb detonate.

Say "BOMB" in an airplane, don't expect handshakes and kisses.

These Marshalls did their job, nobody cares that a nut job said something stupid on an airplane that eventually got him killed.

If you were on that plane and some idiot got up and pushed his way to the front making statements about a bomb, you would want him nuetralized also. Stop the madness, kill crazies.
