Speaking of Selling Assets
Has the mayor looked into possibly selling the Police Department? Seriously. It would relieve the City of it's largest employee base. The City wouldn't be liable for all those big settlements they seem so eager to pay (a private company hiring it's own attorneys would be more likely to fight some of those cases anyway). We'd probably be able to live outside the city; we'd probably be able to strike if need be; equipment and training would be more up to date. We think this has been tried at least once before:

If the city would start fighting some of these frivolous lawsuits and stop giving money away, maybe we would not have to pay for benefits, get at least the cost of living as a raise. Mayor Daley has announced the selling of all its Detective Ed Gorman Memorial Restrooms. Once sold it, all Eddie's Johns will have pay toliets, pay paper towel dispensers and pay sinks. The pictures of male swimmers in speedos will stay and the toliet paper will be a Det. Ed Gorman signature brand toliet paper. The toliet paper will be nice and white without any markings just like his supplementary reports. Everytime you flush a pre-recorded announcement will be made in Ed's own voice giving out helpful police and investigating advice.
The selling or long term leasing of any City property or service is a quick fix with terrible consequences. What Daley is doing is making Chicago look financially solvent during his time as Mayor and leaving our children and grandchildren revenue less in the future. The Skyway took in over 70 million a year before they granted the corporation that took it over the right to raise fees as much as double over the next 10 years. Once the money from the sell of this Skyway is gone and blown who do you think will have to come up with an extra 100,000 million a YEAR to make up for the Skyway over the next 99 years? It's the biggest shell game I ever saw.
As I drive through the inner city all I see now is new senior citizen buildings going up and section 8 houses and town houses. I don't get it? Most of us are working 2 maybe 3 jobs to have our house and maybe send our kids to a private school. The inner city skates free. Free new homes, new kitchen appliances and even furniture. Its a fucking joke and I am getting to the point of exploding. Where the hell in this free country's constitution did it ever say... give the nonworking, the lazy, the baby pumping machines a free ride at our expenses? You don't think that most of this construction is Kenny Brothers or other Daley kickback friends?

We are paying for the lazy ass holes medical with no deductibles, food stamp programs, free beautiful new housing, WIC for the babies (By the way, WIC isn't a government agency, it id wholly sponsored by the Catholic Church of Chicago, that's right, your donations are going to encourage marriage less child births and reckless young baby pumpers) and so many more programs that are too numerous to mention.

Your know how many people are screwed each year by the IRS because some illegal alien is using their social security number. Try explaining to the IRS that you didn't work in California and don't know why the IRS has a W-2 form in your name. They say, too bad, prove you didn't. Hard to prove a negative. As our medical deductables shot up this year, not only can a mexican sneak in our counrty, enjoy free medical, they can also pop out a kid in the USA and wow, its a citizen. So even if you deport the parent, the welfare system has to send checks to Mexico for the kid. Thats like hitting the lotto in Mexico where 1000. bucks a month will get you a house and a maid.
The largest P.O. Box center operated by the US POST OFFICE is on the Texas boarder. They estimate that over 90 percent of the millions sent in government checks there are picked up by the PO BOX holder who is a Mexico resident. They just "visit" the US each month to get their benefits.
We need to do what Wisconsin does. Make the unemployed get jobs to get their free checks. It is working there. I am sick of locking up the drugdealer with the Escalade and the money in his pocket, and the link card THAT WE PAY FOR in his wallet!

S., right before the baby was born to get free medical care, and also to get the baby citizenship so that the baby could come and work here some someday to fund his ranch in Mexico. he took advantage, and he is still laughing at our govt!

Why can't we pay a little more in the pension so a retired cop or fireman can have medical insurance. How do they justify making a retired cop/fireman to pay so much a month for health care coverage but provide FREE coverage to all the people we have been locking up over the years?
We took an oath to hold up the U.S. Constitution and the Illinois Constitution when we accepted employment. The FOP should go to court and demand that Mayor Daley rescind the order for Chicago police officers not to ask or inquire as to the citizenship of an arrestee. But what the Mayor is really afraid of is that is allowed there will be documentation of how many illegal's are committing crimes and not just coming to the USA to better their families.

About those frivolous lawsuits.
I have heard about the city not fighting all those frivolous lawsuits for almost thirty years and I have always wondered about something.
Why would somebody be a city attorney, it can’t pay very much. At least not the mega-bucks that a lawyer can make suing the city.
Now there is no proof that this ever happened even once. The history of graft and corruption in this town suggests that some of those cases could be “sold.” It would make sense, the city pays off, the plaintiff’s lawyer gets his cut, and the city’s attorney, maybe he gets his cut too.
Problem with lawsuits as I had explained to me years ago, is the Federal system. If someone sues the department in federal court and prevails, even if damages are only ONE DOLLAR, the lawyers get their fees.
So you bitch slap some asshole that kicked you in the balls. He sues you in federal court, but the jury understands why you slapped him, after all he kicked you in the balls. They have to uphold the suit, but they think they'll screw him over and award him $1 in damages. Ha Ha, we showed him.....wrong.
Plaintiff gets his $1 but the lawyers get their fees. That is part of the reason that suits that should be litigated are settled....at least that is how it was explained to me.
As a non-lawyer, but long time copper, I think it's screwy. Litigate everything that doesn't have 100% merit. It may cost some, but after a while, the assholes who file for the sue payoff will stop. My 2¢ worth. Too bad King Richard II won't agree.
OPS investigators have been selling cases to private attorneys for years. Some of the cases ther are doing the investigation. If they can manipulate the investigation, the city will settle the civil case and they get their cut...get it!!!

It's not so much the cty atty's. It's the city. Daley specifically. It's really easy. Daley finds his buddies from DePaul that helped him pass and they get to be the plaintiff's. City settles cause they hire pol hacks that could not try a DOPW case, and tell them ahhh, just settle it so wwe don't loose every thing. Joe gets $18M (which he'll piss away in 18 days). Daley's Law School chum get 1/3 to 1/2 (depending if Joe finished his CPS education). And a fat kick back ends up on the 5th floor. All is well.
What we should be asking is why doesn't Chicago or IL pass a no-fault protection for their civil service employees??

For once let's stay on topic.Is the mayor selling assets to make up for a budget shortfall? If this is the case,the end results could be devistating to the citizens and empolyees in the longrun. What is he doing with the proceeds of these sales? Is he funding the policemen's,firefighters,or municipal workers pension funds? All of which are underfunded. After there's nothing else to sell,where will the revenue come from? These are the subjects that we as Police Officers,city employes,and citizens should be concerned about. Instead of trading juvenile insults and racial slurs,we need to concentrate on these things that affect our careers and retirement.
