Sun Times today. Gangs are becoming more evident in the military - but how big a problem is it? Frank Main's article deals mostly with Chicago gangs and their graffiti appearing overseas and the effect they may have on gang activity back here in the US. One example cited is flak jackets turning up here in town. And a California example of two police officers being shot, one fatally by a Marine gang banger with a rifle.
Anyone have any insight into how extensive this problem might be? Any gang specialists? Detectives? Should the Department be putting some more heavy weapons on the street to counter any of this? Or is the media peddling panic again?

Working on a gang team, we run across a lot of military id's from Uncle Sams Misguided Children in the hands of the hispanics. I'm going to be worried about this now along with the other problems here in the U.S. My God, its like I can't even go out of the house anymore without worrying about more stuff. Off topic, but I just returned from the march downtown. Luckily from what I heard and saw it went peacefully, but I have to say that the set up was horrible. Tact teams from every district (but only one team-10 each), special employment, TRU and a few other units and lots of bosses were there. We were so outnumbered it was not even funny. At one point we had one officer PER CITY BLOCK. I was completely surrounded by marchers with no other officer in site. Thank god it went well, but can you imagine how dangerous it would have been if it got out of control?? What moron decided to throw us in there like that? Funny, the city went all out for the anti-war protest with only a couple thousand, but knowing this one was supposed to be over 300,000 you think they would have taken officer safety into consideration. I am just glad no one was hurt.

What I recall of the Marines at least 5 yrs ago. You could not have any markings aka tatoos when you went in. Now after graduating boot camp quite a few would get their tatoos, usually one and it would be hidden, seemed they prefered symbol of military branch.

Actually Majinowski was convicted on the testimony of two gang bangers. No money was ever found. His partner took a plea for giving an informant a rock. Something was definitely fishy about Majinowski, but the court system (state & federal) has a different standard of guilty for police officers. About 2 years ago a G/D gets pulled over in 7. Under a blanket in the back seat is a stolen U S Military M-16? He is taken into 7 where the arresting officers learn he is AWOL from the military. Military requests we don't charge him with the Felony so it will be easier to just come to 7 and scoop him up. When the M.P.'s fail to show up by 0500 Midnight Watch Commander I Bonds him. Took 9 monthes for the military to catch up to him again.
I came on the job without any preconceived notions. My experiences with other races in the military and pre-police jobs were pretty positive. In the acadamey I learned about CPT when I was told by one black PPO, "Black folks don't pay no attention to that shit." Within half an hour of my first roll call I was called, "bitch ass po-leeces" and "white muthafucka" in the beautiful 015 District. Any opinions that I may have, were taught to me by the occupiers of 011 & 015.

In order to receive a "merit" position, one must have taken the examination for that position. i.e., you need to take the dicks test to be considered for a merit position of detective. You do not need to pass the exam only to have taken it.

During my stint as a "fister" we had a guy on the team from Gary, V. Powell, pure gang-banger. Pitch forks and 6-point on his arm.
Not very birght, fairly reserved, spoke ghettto. Used racial terms (honkey, cracker, etc.) when referring to the rest of us.
Damn good at his job!
I frankly don't give a shit if he is/was a gang-banger, as long as he was serving the country, he gets my respect. Given, he left the gang shit behind.
And in his defense, we called him "boy" (he was, after all, the lowest rank of the team).
P.S.
I would rather have that Gang-banger in my squad, then deal with the average butter-bar from ROTC any day.
