Aldercreature Revolt?

Seems the City Council is sensing the sweet sunlight of freedom peeking through the dark shadow that is the Daley Machine. And they seem to be liking it. They are openly defying Daley on a number of issues and it's amusing to see.

Unfortunately, none of them seems to be blessed in the brains department (they're Chicago aldercreatures for pete's sake and democrats to boot) and the things that they are running counter to Daley are either unimportant or economic suicide. For instance:
  • The entire "foie gras" incident. Why a major metropolitan city council would even spend a moment debating whether people with too much money should spend it at ten restaurants that serve goose liver is beyond us.
  • Monday, Ed Burke wants to ban cooking with trans fats at Chicago restaurants. What in the hell is he thinking? We bleed convention business, are billions short in pension obligations and Eddie wants to stop people from spending money?
  • The City Council demands the mayor hire more cops and the mayor essentially says "Screw you." This has yet to play out. Can the Legislative Branch force the Executive to bend to their will, which is essentially the will of the people? This could be interesting shortly.
  • And now, the mayor is trying to get aldercreatures to back off of a number ordinances that will make it difficult for Wal-Mart to open a couple big box stores in town. These include "living wage" and benefits packages.
This is hilarious. And great theater. The aldercreatures don't have a brain among themselves in regard to economic realities and are slowing killing this city on the national stage.
  • Mandating "living wages" will keep Wal Mart out of the city. But city residents are still going to go work there - there goes the City's "head tax" they so dearly love.
  • Wal-Mart, for all it's alleged faults, supplies things that people want and want at a price they are willing to pay - there goes the City's sales taxes.
  • City stores will be driven out of business as the people flock to the surrounding suburbs that are happy to have Wal-Mart there - goodbye to even more head taxes and sales taxes - the death spiral tightens
  • Here's the best part - the aldercreatures are beholden to the unions who are demanding Wal-Mart submit to their will and their insane economic shackles. Wal-Mart probably won't. So the unions contribute to driving more union people out of jobs as businesses shut and support services disappear.
And if you really want a laugh, the City is declining to enforce immigration statutes, becoming a "sanctuary city" of sorts. More illegals show up and the illegal job seekers increase. Illegals are doing jobs at lower wages, further damaging and eroding the unions membership. Illegals don't have a lot of money, working these lower paying jobs, where are they going to shop? Wal-Mart!

God help us, we love this stuff.

How about a "living wage and benefits package" for city employees?

We used to have great medical benefits but we got conned into paying $2.00 a paycheck for what was part of our compensation package. Now the city goes to the insurance companies and demands that they create special low end plans that make welfare look better.

Meanwhile, I wonder what the mayor and alderman get as medical, and retirement plans.

Hope you're enjoying life outside of the city in the fu*kin middle of nowhere. On the other hand, life in the city is great with great seats to Bears and Sox games, great restaurants, great music downtown, constant stream of activities to keep anyone occupied. So have fun watering your grass in the middle of nowhere. With your personality I'm sure your neighbors and former coworkers do not miss you at all.

Allah forbid we pay a decent wage to the Walmart workers on the South Side. Could it be because these new stores shall be located in African-American neighorhoods?

That's right (dear M, as lefty calls you) blame the unions. The unions drive the jobs out; the unions hike up the prices when they're there; the unions, the unions, the unions.

Yet you dear M, reap the benefits of a fraternal organization, that despite all its faults, still serves a purpose. Think without representation things will be this good? I doubt it.

Look at those states where unions are scare. Low wages across the board, especially to those persons of color.

Illegals, well that's another topic. Typical Republican garbage. Blame the lower class and unions even when the rich EUROPEAN-AMERICANS rape the American public. Unfortunately those persons not of color close their eyes. You are part of the problem.

You Sir, Are What's commonly referred to as a Hand Job! Chicago is the only place in the country to live? Broaden your horizons for God's sake and maybe travel a little. Yuppies near Taylor and Western you say? Look at them closely. Living amongst the most dangerous creatures in 011 might seem easier than living with the Taliban, or malaria back in their native village. They can have it. Chicago will have all-white enclaves near the lake and those who remain will be taxed out of existence to support the shit in the remainder of the city. Where do you guys get your facts? Are they for attribution or is this knowledge imbued in you at birth? What is with the shoe shine box thing? It's from a twenty year old movie. It's trite. It's banal. It's pathetically old. Below is some information taken from the 2000 US Census. Try to digest it without bursting a blood vessel.

After a population decline since the 1950s, the population of Chicago increased from 2,783,726 in 1990 to 2,896,016 in 2000. According to the 2000 census, whites constitute 42 percent of the city's population; blacks, 36.8 percent; Asians, 4.3 percent; Native Americans, 0.4 percent; and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, 0.1 percent. People of mixed heritage or not reporting ethnicity were 16.5 percent of inhabitants. Hispanics, who may be of any race, represent 26 percent of the city's population. Chicago is the center of a large metropolitan area spreading across three states, from Kenosha, Wisconsin, in the north to Gary, Indiana, in the southeast. The population of the consolidated metropolitan statistical area increased from 8,115,000 in 1980 to 8,240,000 in 1990. It reached 9,157,500 in 2000. The percentage of minorities is lower in the metropolitan area than in the city. Blacks account for only about one in five in the metropolitan region as a whole, and Hispanics represent approximately one in nine residents. While the proportion of Hispanics is growing in the metropolitan area, black presence has remained mostly unchanged.

Do you think we care? Animals are here for three purposes - food, clothing and entertainment. That's it. Sometimes they can be all three at once, like when we go hunting for Bambi. Sometimes we like to go see those bears that ride the bicycles in the circus. And if someone made them into tasty bear-burgers later and we got a nifty hat like the Queen's Guard has, we'd be even happier. Who cares how they made foie gras - that wasn't the point of the post. The point was aldercreatures deciding how and what the market will provide. Attempting to control the what should be unfettered. Let the market decide.

Still confused after all this time I see.

Without union representation, we as Chicago police officers would not have the workplace protections we now take for granted. In fact, it is very likely we'd be forced to eat out Daley's ass to keep our jobs--which was very near the truth 50+ years ago.

You see SCC, it's unions--workers orgainizing for decent working conditions and a living wage--that brought us the 8 hour working day, weekends off, and the recognition that our children are ill-served slaving in cold mines and sweat shops.

Wal-Mart is and always has been anti-union. Its business model is a "success" because it entirely depends on reducing costs via the payment of virtual slave-wages to their non-union employees.

The so-called "benefits" to the city's coffers should Wal-Mart be allowed to build its sweatshop here are negligible when one considers that Daley attempted to attract them through the use of massive public subsidies. For example, the use of Tax Incriment Financing zones (TIFs) are a case in point and one of Daley's favorite divices. A TIF zone ensures that the fetted corporation's taxes will only be used for the upkeep of infrastructure within an area restricted to the immediate environs of the company's assets. In other words, not a dime will be spent on infrastructure in neighborhoods outside of this zone. Not a thin dime will be spent on a single squad car, school book, play lot, or library not specified in the TIF.

Often, as inducement, the Daley administration has offered companies reduced tax obligations or deferrment of up to 15 years. So the cost of operating in the city for Wal-Mart would be peanuts, whereas the the costs to the taxpayer would be enormous since we are in effect footing the bill.

In no way are we served as citizens or city employees by assisting Wal-Mart's bottom line as they attempt to fuck over more workers.

SSC I think we enjoy the benefits and protections that the FOP provides us (sure they could be better), why should it be different for workers at Wal-Mart? What do think a union is exactly and are you familiar with the concept of solidarity?

And yet, time and time again, attempts to unionize at WalMart fail. Why is that? Because people who work there might actually be happy there??

::gasp!:: Oh my god! Let's unionize! People are happy! This cannot stand!

Go look at the employee surveys. Go look at how every single manager there started out as a greeter. Go look at how WalMart already offers health care for its full time workers. And stop relying on these loaded and biased leftist surveys that only take into account part timers not getting health care (show us a part time gig that does) and go find out why WalMart is a pioneer in a global economy.

Sure, unions were great in the days when workers had no rights and worked 12 hours for straight time and had no health care. But they've become ossified dinosaurs and free money machines for democrats and other leftist causes. Did you know unions contributed around $20 MILLION to Republicans over the past 5 years? Twenty MILLION dollars. To the democrats over the same time frame? $229 BILLION. That is not a misprint. Two hundred twenty nine BILLION dollars. That is a difference of something like 4 orders of magnitude. And that doesn't reflect the opinions of union members, 40% of whom identify themselves as conservative or right leaning. Put that in your union pipe and smoke it.

And as so many visitors point out, we don't belong to a union, we are a fraternal order. We lack the power to strike, so we pretend that we come to agreements with the mayor when in reality he could tell us to go pound sand every time we came to the table and force us to arbitration. Unions refused to change with the times and so have doomed themselves and their workers to obsolesence. Union rules are killing convention business here in town. It takes 5 or 6 unions two days to put up a remote police cameras when a private contractor was putting up 5 a day. GM keeps an entire workforce on standby, paying them to drink coffee every for a year at a time due to antiquated rules. The mayor can't even fire incompetent teachers anymore without the union screaming. And just TRY to test a teacher to see if they know the material the are supposed to instruct our children on. Don't blindly tell us that unions are a good thing for everyone all the time anymore. More often than not, they aren't.

SCC, these birds are NOT shot to death but kept ALIVE while they are tortured for this gourmet food.

Again, do you think we care? Let's spell it out for you - w.e. d.o.n't. And if there are people with money to throw away on nonsense such as diseased goose livers, hooray for them. Have you ever seen how cows and pigs are slaughtered? We have. Doesn't make us dislike a nice steak or burger or a big hunk of ham or a side of bacon.

ONCE AGAIN, our point isn't how or why goose liver is made into paste (tasty or not, we don't know, we choose not to indulge). Our point is aldrecreatures attempting to nanny state us constantly into what is good and proper for the citizens. Leave those decisions to us. Stay the hell out of our homes, our refrigerators, out bedrooms and our cable TV menus. We decide what is good for us. We decide what our children should be exposed to. We decide - it's the American way.

I often forget how little you understand SSC, forgive me. I should not have assumed that you would recognize that as a member of a collective bargaining unit which elects represpentatives to negotiate work rules, salary, health care packages, and arbitrate disputes with management makes you a part of a union. None of these things could be accomplished if we were working alone in isolation, each of us independently negotiating with the city. Thus, in order to strengthen our position, we unionized. Do you see how that works?

Fraternal order? Well of course. It is axiomatic that fraternity and solidarity are the foundation of ANY union. By pointing out that we are a fraternal order in no way undermines my position--it supports it.

As to your assertion that unions contributed 229 billion dollars to democrats over the past five years, I am extremely sceptical of its veracity. In any event it should not be remarkable that unions are willing to contribute more to the political party that at least pays lip-service to union concerns.

What is more troubling is your inablity to recognize as clumsy propaganda, the nonsense that most workers would prefer the agenda of so-called conservatives peddling "globalization" and all that it entails.

Lets take the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as an example. Before you go on an anti-Clinton tirade let me acknowledge at once that it was rammed down the throats of Mexicans under the Clinton administration. But that is unsurprising given the fact that, in reality, there is fundimentally little difference between the Democratic Party and its Republican counterpart. In this country we have but one political party--the Business Party--with two factions. NAFTA ensures that profits for American muti-national corporations will be protected and enhanced, while workers on both sides of the border get shafted.

Here is how it works. The "trade" between Mexico and the US overwhelmingly consists of transactions between American corporations and their subsidiaries south of the Rio Grande. NAFTA removes such inconveniences as tariffs or taxes that would nominally support the infrastructure of the host country (Mexico). Far more importantly, due to this "agreement" unions in the American-owned subsidiaries south of the border are banned. With this ban of course go the work place conditions and wages that Mexican workers fought so hard for over decades.

This has the double effect of increasing profits via sweat shop conditions maintained and, in fact, formalized by NAFTA in Mexico while disciplining American workers with credible threats to relocate further operations south of the border should they make unreasonable demands such as decent working conditions and a living wage.

Clearly it is to the benefit of corporations to lobby Congress in support of such schemes, but where do you get the impression that American workers are overjoyed with them as well?

I'll concern myself with mistreatment of farm animals when we stop aborting a million babys a year in this country. I'll trade chicken livers for foie gras when I rest assured the disabled and the elderly aren't allowed to be euthanized become it is no longer convenient to keep them alive. What are the priorities in this country, and city. I hope that Irish prick Burke chokes on a chiken bone.

Now alot of those conventions have gone to Las Vegas and Orlando. Guess what if you dropped out of 8th grade and the only job you can get is stocking shelves at Wal Mart you deserve the pay you get. I wonder if the city is paying the mexicans screwing up traffic on every street watering and planting flower beds $13 a hour how about the workers at Moo and Oink do they get $13 an hour. This city is a joke and the aldercreatures are out of control and thank god The G is locking up a few of the A$$holes. You obviously were not on this job prior to the advent of the FOP. I was and we were owned by City Hall and at the mercy of the divine right ruler sitting on the fifth floor. The greatest change was the codification of police officers' rights. Yet, this seems to be unknown and ignored by most officers. If you are unhappy with the current administration of the FOP, an apparatus exists for change. Vote the rascals out of office. Naturally, the change will involve time and effort. Instead of using this blog for sophomoric commentary and feeble attempts at humor, let it become one of the instruments of change. Don’t denigrate history lessons. The stuff that happened before put us where we are today. Understanding the past will help navigate the present and the future. If you don’t like the current situation, you definitely won’t like a return to the pre-FOP days.

Lived my entire life in the city, willing to pay my taxes, earned enough to pay them due to building my own (very successful) business in the private sector. Not a disappointed, disillusioned, public employee who regrets his career choices. Took the risks that I (you) needed to take to live in an extraordinary building with security, views, educated successful neighbors and access to a beautiful city with plenty of activities any night of the week. Pleased to live where I do.

We back our facts up with research, Go look in our last July Archives around the 25th or so. We link to the story about the discrepancy in union contributions among the political parties. We forget that you leftists never let a bunch of facts get in the way of a valid point. You just put your fingers in your ears and scream "la la la la" so you don't have to hear facts. It's amusing when you're 2 and annoying when you're a teenager. It's very sad when you're of voting age and think you're actually making a point.

As to the difference between Unions and Fraternal Orders, it is huge. Unions were (and are) able to bring management to the bargaining table with the threat of work slowdowns or stopages. Management counters with scabs, relocating factories and lockouts. For a time, it balanced itself out.

As many are fond of pointing out, we are a Fraternal Order. We are restricted by local, state and federal law from striking. Even advocating a ticket slowdown or a "blue flu" is grounds for charges and immediate dismissal from the force. So what is our club to bring management to the table?

Here's a hint - there isn't one.

The only reason we got a "union" is because the Machine was reeling at old man Daley's death and Byrne liked the police. We got the best contract in history under Jane. But don't kid yourself that we dragged the City to the table and forced a union on them. We had no threat. We still have no threat.

As stated before, Daley and his people could refuse to meet with us for months and years (and have refused for months on end) whenever our contract comes up. We can't drag them to the table. All we can do is file for arbitration. Do you think the UAW would stand for all the "interpretation" on their contracts with the automakers that Daley's people do to us? Not a chance in hell - they'd stage wildcat strikes and drag GM and Ford back to the table. What do we do? File for arbitration again. And again. And again.

Your stating Wal-Mart pays "slave wages" is pure rhetoric and baseless. And bringing up the specter of child labor is laughable. Try making a cognizant argument based on fact and existing labor law. Sure, the unions forced a number of beneficial and overdue changes upon the business community. Years and years ago. But don't pretend that the demise of unions will bring back the bad old days. You sound ridiculous.

You made a part 1 felony arrest arrest every day, get all convictions, have lots of honorables, are the real police, etc., etc...don't have time to study for the test due to all the court, and the merit promotions are for suck asses and clout babies.....

Yep. And you know this, but keep busting your ass.

Don't worry, kid. In 20 years, you can tell the new guys stories about when you worked with ADS Curry in 025, and what a tool he was.

And by that time, his kid might be your sergeant.

Curry is a little late to be anybody's boss. Jiminy came on right in front of me, so he's pushing 14 or 15 years. Do you really think kissing up to the WC will get you made Sgt? 50 Sgt's in a class means 15 clout spots. Daley, Burke, Beavers, a few other aldercreatures, Cline, Starks, Grau, Williams get their picks. How many do you think are left over? Throw in maybe one legit one for a guy who jumped on a hand grenade and their ain't a lot left over when the big fish are done eating. Do you think Williams is going to give a pick to the 3rd watch WC in that shithole 025? You're a stupid fuck if you think a WC can get you a clout promotion. Whoever posted that stuff about all the handjobs giving you the look when you walk into 025 was right on. Facts backed up by research? Could have fooled me.

The unions you disparage with such glee represent the interests of their members with respect to corporations. A corporation (by law) has only one concern above all others--the profit margin. It is quite reasonable for workers to use the threat of a strike as leverage at the bargining table with management when ultimately only money is at stake. If a corporation losses money or even goes out of business entirely the world doesn't stop turning.

Juxtipose this, however, with the responsibilities public safety employees have to the municipalities (thus the public) they serve. For us to declare a strike would be both irresponsible and immoral. So of course the strike is not an option for us--nor should it be. We serve a higher purpose than money.

That said, our union or , if you prefer, our fraternal order provides the strength in numbers an institutional framework from which we may adress our concerns with the city in a way not feasible were we isolated individuals. That's what a union does.

You write that I "sound ridiculous" yet you carefully avoid (no doubt wisely) addressing my arguments. What "benefits" will a Wal-Mart bring to the city given its notorious approach to labor and the massive public subsidies offered to attract them? What evidence can you provide that supports your outrageous claim that workers embrace the third-world, sweatshop business model Wal-Mart and other corporations wish to bring to America?

If support for these policies is so vast why are the so-called "free trade" agreements faceing such sustained resistence both domestically and abroad? The NAFTA extentions are in deep trouble. The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) went down in flames in the face of overwhelming popular opposition. OFTA (the same scheme for the Middle East) is headed for the same fate.
