Almost a Darwin Award

  • One juvenile is hospitalized, reportedly with a broken neck, after he tried to escape police and jumped from the roof of a building he was "“tagging"” with two other juveniles who were in police custody early Wednesday on the Near South Side.
  • The juveniles were scrawling graffiti symbols atop a tire remanufacturing company near the railroad tracks at Cermak and Western about 3 a.m. when one of them jumped from the building to avoid police capture, said Ogden District Lt. Sam Cozzo.
  • "One of them got real stupid [and jumped]," Cozzo said.
Well said boss. Now, any bets on how soon until mommy and daddy sue the police for their delinquent child? We give it 30 days.

SCC, no thread about the huge round-up in 021's Dearborn homes?

Any one hear that a Female Black copper from 021 was found in bed with a high ranking GD, when they served one of the warrants?

I have a question, though I doubt anyone has the answers.

How many of those arrested were on a CHA lease or engaged in activity on the premises or with the consent of someone on a CHA lease?

The CHA is supposed to have a zero-tolerance policy (or something close) for leaseholders. And the Dearborn homes is one of the last remaining blights on State street. If 30 of these people being arrested can lead to the eviction of 30 leaseholders and family, can we call it even and tear one of the Dearborn homes down?

That would be a nice milestone. Every time the CHA has reasons to evict the equivalent of a building's worth of tenants, empty one out and tear it down.

I honestly doubt the CHA has even asked to check who was arrested, but it sure would be nice.

Monday quik hits

Pull the proposed by laws from your ASS?

You are great about posting all kinds of bullshit but when it comes to the future of your union suddenly everyone else has to post and link

The proposals were made at the May general meeting and with your contacts with Donahue and crew if it was in their "best interests" we would all know about the proposed by law amendments but since Markie doesn't like the proposed amendments no go HUH...

It is amazing what you choose to post but then again it is your site but the things that are not of interest to you speaks volumes!!! I guess you will remove this post too.

Great, another mouthbreather. Listen up asshat. Go read what we posted, then have someone with a brain translate it to whatever language you are using this week.

In fact, we'll repost the comment for you rather than tax your tiny little brain:

E-mail us the bylaw proposals and we'll publish them. Put up a link and we'll link to them. But don't expect us to pull them out of your ass just because you think they exist somewhere.

We don't have them - supply them or shut up.

E-mail us the bylaw proposals. What's so hard about that? Can't you type? Can't you attach a file to an e-mail? SUPPLY THEM TO US AND WE WILL POST THEM. Do we have to say it again? You need us to hold your hand? What? Give us a sign, something that says you aren't as stupid as you appear to be.

Isn't it YOUR union too? Or are you one of the recently expelled members? We don't purport to know what "markie" (as you so quaintly put it) thinks about the bylaws and we haven't seen them. Are they on the site? Are they in the newsletter? Give us info. We are a clearinghouse for info, rumor and innuendo. And you provide none of the above.lrfljiag

Anyone know what the hell is going on with the city stickers? I went to purchase mine today and it said I had to pay $90 for a heavy passenger vehicle!

I drive a '01 Pathfinder and the last time I checked, it was well under the 4500 lbs limit.

When I bought the sticker last year, they tried that shit and I told the clerk, "I don't think so."

Today, the revenue guy told me that when the city sticker police randomly check vehicles, they don't give a rats ass about the year, just the make and model. I paid the extra $15 but I'm going downtown and pitching a bitch to get it back.

How many other people got screwed? Tens of thousands I bet. Multiply that by $15 and Lil' Richard has enough to pay off his new condo.

Anybody know a good class action lawyer?

A Chicago Police officer and a key Mickey Cobras street gang leader were among 47 people charged Wednesday with running a major drug operation out of the Dearborn Homes housing project -- but no charges involved a rash of fatal overdoses involving fentanyl-laced heroin linked to the same area.

According to a 213-page federal complaint, Prairie District Officer Tashika Sledge, 29, helped Lynn Barksdale, a member of the gang's board of directors, by hiding his drug sales paraphernalia.

Mickey Cobras arrested

She also allegedly gave Barksdale access to her police database to help him determine which Mickey Cobras were under surveillance and to identify who was following him by checking vehicle license plates.

Overseen by James Austin, the gang's "king," dealers marketed eight strains of potent heroin -- identified by names such as "Max Pain," "Reaper," "Lethal Injection," "Drop Dead," "Fear Factor," Final Call," "Skyrocket," "Girls Gone Wild" and "Penicillin," First Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary Shapiro said.

"They carry niche marketing to the extreme," he said.

Dealers working with Austin would pay street taxes between $500 and $1,000 a week so they could sell the different brands, Shapiro said. Austin, 29, was arrested Wednesday in Akron, Ohio, and charged with overseeing sales.

'No one is above the law'

Police Supt. Phil Cline said it was troubling that Sledge allegedly betrayed the public trust. She was stripped of her police powers and assigned to a clerical job two months ago when U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency officials alerted the department of suspicions about her actions, he said.

She will be placed on a "no-pay status" in light of her arrest, Cline said.

"More than ever, this should illustrate that no one is above the law, not even a police officer," Cline said.

While federal authorities spoke of many strains of heroin, they divulged no details specifically related to fentanyl-tainted heroin at the Chicago Housing Authority's Dearborn Homes complex.

They would only say that fentanyl, manufactured for legal use as a pain-killer, was seized alone and not mixed with any other drug Jan. 25 and April 25 in small plastic bags.

No link to fentanyl deaths yet

Shapiro said additional charges could be filed, but he would not connect 60 Cook County deaths linked to fentanyl-laced heroin to any of the defendants listed in the federal complaint.

"It contains no allegations relating to resulting harm to drug users," Shapiro said after an early-morning sting that reached from Chicago to Katy, Texas.

"For this reason, I have to emphasize that none of these defendants are charged with or are alleged to be responsible for any of the deaths connected to fentanyl use," he said.

The other suspects charged in the "Operation Snakebite" probe include Austin's chief assistant, Johnny Shannon, 27, of Chicago; Barksdale, 32; another Chicago-based Mickey Cobras' director, Larry Smith, 31, and Kevin Williams, 25, who had been freed on bail after he was charged with the 2003 shooting of a 9-year-old boy, police said.

Williams posted 10 percent of the $100,000 bond in the shooting. He failed to appear at a court hearing, but he still managed to stay out of jail, Cline said. The victim suffers from slurred speech, can't use his right hand and is in a special education program in sixth grade, Cline said.

"We're disappointed that such a low bond was set for a person who shot a 9-year-old boy," Cline said. "It's a shame he was able to continue doing business."

Thirty of the 47 defendants in custody are expected to appear in federal court today.

All of the arrested suspects in the investigation, which followed months of wiretaps and undercover drug buys, were charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana and fentanyl from 1999 to 2006.

Renee, I beg to differ. If you check the City website, it says all vehicles with a curb weight of 4500lbs or more have to display the LP sticker.

As I stated before, I have a 2001 Pathfinder, with a curb weight just under 4000lbs. Since the city started this crap, I've never paid $90.

Apparently someone just decided to include ALL Pathfinders, regardless of the model year.

Nissan didn't start making those HUGE Pathfinders until 2003. Those suckers weigh anywhere from 4400-4900lbs.

I'm headed to City Hall next week for a fight. I'm sure there are thousands of people with the same gripe. It's the principle of the thing. Besides, $15 is a third of a tank of
