Memories of Eto

  • Notorious mob turncoat Ken "Tokyo Joe" Eto has died of natural causes.

Sources tell CBS 2 News that Eto actually died two years ago, but it's only coming to light now.

Eto is the only known Chicago mob figure to survive an assassination attempt and testify against the outfit.
Some of us remember the missed hit quite well. We also remember a bit of humorous wagering going on about who would turn up "trunked" for screwing up so bad. Five months later, Gattuso and Campise turned up masquerading as hamburger meat. Perhaps some of our vets could fill in the missing details? Or expound upon the seeming lack of any interest in the Outfit anymore (because they all work for the City nowdays?)

Channel 7 also covers the story.

I heard that [retired] Capt. James MAHER was sweating the fact that ETO didn't die in front of the Montclaire Theatre on West Grand Avenue.
While they say "Cream rises to the top"
In his case I think the more appropriate statement would be..."Shit floats too!"

The hitmen carried what was then part-time Cook County Sheriff deputy badges handed out by then Sheriff Elrod.

The p/t program allowed ELROD to hand out full police power deputy badges to those who worked 1 day out of 28 days.

Most were high powered politically friends as well as many mob figures.

The program came to a sudden halt after the two hitmen were found to be sworn p/t Cook County Sheriffs.

There is still a few agencies that have this program. Many call it Aux. Police or Park District Police. I know that Maywood and Bellwood use to have it.

So as I always said, just because they flash a badge, it don't mean shit.

yyPow, Pow, Pow, Pow, Pow....nay, nay ,nay , nay you didn't kill me! The ATTEMPTED hit was done with a .22 caliber Mark 1 Ruger, with the so-called hit man leaving the gun buried in a garbage can only to be found hours later. Total idiots leaving Eto alive and really botching the hit up. Hell, I would have done better than that!!! LONG LIVE JOEY LOMBARDO.

As I recall it back then (I was working in 25, 3rd watch), Eto was to meet the two men at an Italian Restaurant around the Corner of the Montclaire Theatre. (Cannot remember restaurant name but it was suppose to be an outfit joint to have meetings in, great food also).

After dinner, they went to a parking lot directly behind the show and Eto sat in the front passenger seat, with the other two driving, and in the right rear seat behind Eto.

Before they drove away the guy in back pulled out a .22 revolver and shot Eto six times in the back of the head.

Eto was either pushed out or ran out while the two assasins drove away. He was bleeding heavily and was able to walk over to the CTA Bus turn around almost across the street from the show where he walked into a drug store seeking first aid.

The drug store manager called police and a fire ambulance.

The bullets never pierced his scalp and were lodged in the back sticking out.

(It was said that a .22 fired that close may not have had enough velocity or punch to break thru his scull, but if they had used .22 mags, or a larger caliber bullet, it may have killed him as intended).

The story faded after several months and the witness protection must have worked as nobody ever talked about him since then, and now we are hearing he died over two years ago.

So even the dead are protected.

(Anyone with more facts please post as my memory fades with all the Kool Aide I have to drink to continue working).

Supposedly he was shot only 3 trimes, not six

It happened in Feb of 1983

The alleged shooters were Jaspar Campise and Johnny Gattuso who were both found in car trunks in the State of Indiana shortly afterwards

Oh there's plenty of interest in the Mafia. If comes from the FBI though. Chicagoans don't pay attention to it. We figure that's the way the world works. What do you want, Topeka Kansas? If so, then move there. We like our mobbed up politicians. We even like seeing them all go to jail. It is more satisfying than anything else.

Immediately after being released on bond for the botched hit the FBI had a tail on both Gattuso and Campise. The very day the FBI pulled the tail off them they both dissappeared. They were subsequently found dead in the trunk of a black Volvo 4 door in an unincoporated area of Naperville, Il. One of them, I forgot which one, was last seen near Patriccas Restaurant at Grand and Western in 013. I think the G stopped sharing sensitve information of this nature with the CPD after that.

Jasper Campise was found in the trunk of a car at ohare airport

Wrong. Both were found in the trunk in unincorporated Naperville. The mudball found at O'Hare was involved in a chop shop, I think. Ever think the outfit has done a better job infiltrating the CPD than the Police Department has done infiltrating the outfit? Wonder why? Look at your mayors.
