Target Cancels Store Building

We'll take credit for this one - we wrote at least a couple of letters to Target, Wal-Mart and Home Depot urging them to refrain from building stores in the City due to the City Council's recent passage of an overly burdensome minimum wage and benefits package. Today, Target announced the following:
  • Target has pulled out of a 32-acre shopping mall at 119th and Marshfield and will likely cut and run from the North Side's Wilson Yards project as well, city officials said Wednesday.
Excuse us for a moment - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

This cancellation comes AFTER the project had already nailed down a $23 million dollar subsidy for construction of road improvements, utility upgrades and other construction work. So let's tally this up here - the Aldercreatures have just killed the jobs of concrete setters, bricklayers, carpenters, electricians, sprinkler fitters, laborers, drywallers, road crews, sewer, mechanical engineers, pipefitters, landscapers, iron workers, countless truck drivers, etc., etc., etc.

Do we have to go on? And how many of these would have been UNION jobs? All of them? In an area BEGGING for jobs? Even minimum wage jobs? Excuse us again - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

We will now commence to (A) continuing our letter writing campaign to have Home Depot and Wal-Mart cancel their building projects in the City and (B) write an additional letter or two to Target supporting their action AND encouraging them to remain outside of the city even if the mayor manages to find the balls to veto this project, just to teach the City Council a lesson.

Quit being such fools. let me lay out exactly what's going to happen:

1.) Daley will remain silent regarding a veto.

2.) Wal Mart et. al. will file the mother of all lawsuits.

3.) the more so liberal lower courts will uphold the ordinance.

4.) the more so conservative appeallate courts will over turn it.

5.) if the City Council has the balls to dare take it to Supreme Ct, Bush's buddies will bitch slap Dorothy Tilman so fast she'll think she's still walking the street.

Don't fret your little head, Wal Mart will be a-ok!

Well done SCC. It's very disheartening when a company caves to those special interests imposing on their freedom to do business (a la Rainbow/Push strong arm tactics). I think the mayor might end up vetoing this one, but I'm glad he didn't do it before Target could make a stand.

Rarely do you see stories that discuss the costs of illegal aliens. There is simply a disproportionate number of stories describing "racism" and other weak points of view. Of course, it's the liberal media who hates America that creates the perspective.

Illegal Alien Beefs Because She Can't Have It All
She's lucky this foolish nation paid for her secondary education.

She watches the coverage on TV, reads about it in the newspaper, writes about it in her journal. "I am tired of having to find ways around what normal teenager citizens do. I can't drive. I can't travel. I can't work. I can't apply to thousands of scholarships that are perfect for me."

Oh, poor baby. Your parents cut in line, didn't follow the rules, and now things are coming back to bite you. Sure, it's not your fault; dad and mom did their best to make a better life in America by thumbing their nose at the law. I can't blame the parents nor can I fault the girl. Our government encouraged the influx of illegals by creating an environment of accommodation. Nevertheless, she's got that entitlement mentality that came with all the freebies she got while living an illegal existence here. Now she's been conditioned to want more--it's only natural. And wouldn't you know it, there are a myriad of politicians (verminous Democrats) that are waiting to legitimize and pander to her and the millions that share her same condition. Who really gives a damn about the rule of law, national security, or the taxpayers' hard earned money! That is really the bottom line unless you are a fan of chaos.

And here's a perfect example of that aforementioned politician:

Last spring, Cabrera asked Angie to speak at a program honoring U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois for his support of pending legislation that would grant temporary residency status to students with a high school diploma who enroll in college. The students would achieve permanent residency once they graduated or served two years in the military. The act, however, does not help students pay for school.

Another form of accommodation to make life just a little more easy for those who cut in line. Sen Dick Durbin is just another member of the fifth column. Like the name of this blog, our laws are really pointless.

How Unskilled Immigrants Hurt Our Economy by Steven Malanga, City Journal Summer 2006

Yet while these workers add little to our economy, they come at great cost, because they are not economic abstractions but human beings, with their own culture and ideas—often at odds with our own. Increasing numbers of them arrive with little education and none of the skills necessary to succeed in a modern economy. Many may wind up stuck on our lowest economic rungs, where they will rely on something that immigrants of other generations didn’t have: a vast U.S. welfare and social-services apparatus that has enormously amplified the cost of immigration. Just as welfare reform and other policies are helping to shrink America’s underclass by weaning people off such social programs, we are importing a new, foreign-born underclass. As famed free-market economist Milton Friedman puts it: “It’s just obvious that you can’t have free immigration and a welfare state.”

Another Precious Contribution By An Illegal Alien
Charlotte Observer 07/16/2006 `There's not any closure for us'

They come here to work? They come here to raise their families and try to have a shot at the American dream? Well, perhaps most do. Nevertheless, apart from their line cutting in the immigration line, they also kill and maim. Here's a nightmare story about a not-so-atypical illegal did to the lives of an American family. The verminous scum embodied two of most contemptuous traits that make me sick: a drunk driver and an illegal alien. Read the article and cry. I did.

I am tired of hearing you cry babies complain about the FOP 7 President Mark Donahue's salary.

You don't think he should be paid well? He has to take many out-of state business trips (at your expense), he has to wine and dine many friends of the FOP including himself! (at your expense) he has to manage a large FOP budget and carefully hide any cash kickbacks (at your expense) He has to drive a nice car provided by FOP with special FOP plates (at your expense) and those misc. charges for away expenses... call gals, lap dances, female escorts, strip clubs are to entertain friend of the FOP (at your expense).

Quit bitching and let the man bleed the FOP dry and get all his freebies, blow jobs, fucks, and free trips. Not to mention take care of those girlfriends of the married FOP other elected officers.

There is more drinking, sex, free trips, favors for females going on at that office than was going on in the White House when Blow Job Bill Clinton was in office.

Why not have them publish a complete list of all the elected FOP officers expenses, both here and when they are out of town?
You want to be shocked. The expenses they have are 10 times all their salaries COMBINED!
All those bullshit national FOP conferences, top rated hotel stays, big bar bills, big dinner expenses and other "MISC" expenses.

And the funny part is they couldn't give TWO CENTS what you or I think! They truly believe in their hearts they deserve it all because they were elected!

The Mayor does not need the balls. He just needs two votes, which he will get, and then some, by promising the moon to affected aldermen.

He knows that we cannot keep these companies out of Chicago. He also knows that if they go, otherw will follow. Home Depot will cut jobs to absorb costs. Other major retailers will stay away.

Our economy and tax base rely on these stores, otherwise. our property taxes will shoot through the roof. But it is up to us, the citizens to pitch it by letter writing and action.

Critics believe that Wal-Mart should play the role General Motors played after World War II… [and] establish the post-world-war middle class that the country is so proud of. The facts are that retailing doesn’t perform that role in the economy. Retailing doesn’t perform that role in any country.
—Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott, April 2005

To workers and union leaders, it is a familiar refrain. These days, the story goes, consumers demand low prices, meaning goods must be produced and sold cheaply — and retail wages must be kept as low as possible. Companies like Wal-Mart insist they’re feeling the squeeze and must pay workers poverty wages — even while netting $10.5 billion in annual profits and awarding millions to top executives.

But there’s another company that is breaking the Wal-Mart mold: Costco Wholesale Corp., now the fifth-largest retailer in the U.S. While Wal-Mart pays an average of $9.68 an hour, the average hourly wage of employees of the Issaquah, Wash.-based warehouse club operator is $16. After three years a typical full-time Costco worker makes about $42,000, and the company foots 92% of its workers’ health insurance tab.

How does Costco pull it off? How can a discount retail chain pay middle-class wages and still bring in over $880 million in net revenues? And, a cynic may ask, with Wal-Mart wages becoming the norm, why does it bother?

A number of factors explain Costco’s success at building a retail chain both profitable and fair to its workers. But the basic formula is one the labor movement has been advocating for decades: a loyal, well-compensated workforce means a more efficient and productive one.

A little off topic, but for those of you who live around St Xavier Univ. in Mt Greenwood and own rental property, beware of the following scam.
A Polish woman in her early 50's who works at the university is going around to properties for rent and arranging to rent the house/condo for a year for herself. Before signing the lease, she tells the property owner that she needs to have her associate, who is being listed as a renter, take a look at the place. When he shows up later, guess what, it's duke. Three separate instances so far involving this lady. The people involved will not give up her name yet, but be wary. If they don't show up with enough info to do a proper background check, that's grounds for denial of rental. Also, if she adds the name of a second person at the last minute, that's a violation of most standard rental agreements. Lastly, this practiceshe is engaging in is called Deceptive Practice, as she cannot live in more than one property, yet she is listing her name as a renter of a residential property, and not having the authority to sub-let the property. Of course, the affected property owners are being threatened with the race card if they refuse to rent when duke shows up.

Shopping in a Target store, you know you’re not in Wal-Mart. But, critics say that in terms of working conditions, sweatshop-style foreign suppliers, and effects on local retail communities, big box Target stores are very much like Wal-Mart, just in a prettier package.

Target, the national discount-store chain, has informed employees who work an average of 20 hours a week or less that beginning in March, their paid vacation and health care coverage will be eliminated, according to the Star-Tribune newspaper of Minneapolis.

Currently, employees can work just a few hours a week and become eligible for the company's basic health-care plan. Such benefits have given Minneapolis-based Target a reputation as a benevolent employer.

But Target, like other retailers, finds itself in a difficult climate. The discounter's year-to-date same-store sales - a key indicator measuring sales at stores open at least a year - have increased just 1.1 percent, the Star-Tribune reports.

Target spokeswoman Carolyn Brookter declined to discuss specifics about the changes or the number of people affected. With 1,000-plus stores nationwide, Target's discount store division employs about 245,000.

Brookter told the Star-Tribune that while some workers will see benefits eliminated, others will receive an improved package - though she again declined to give specifics.

"This is not a cost-savings measure," Brookter said. "This is a way to remain competitive in the industry and to make sure we can cover people with our future growth. The majority of employees will receive increased benefits."

The other employees will have the option of increasing their weekly hours beyond the 20-hour benchmark in order to receive health care, dental, vacation and other benefits, she added.

The news has left some Target store employees, both full-and part-time, confused about how their benefits will change, according to the Star-Tribune.

The newspaper also reports that such cuts at the low-end come at a time when Target Corp. Chairman and CEO Robert Ulrich's salary has made him the highest paid CEO in Minnesota.

The disparity between the two will be a rallying point for the United Food and Commercial Workers union as it attempts to organize SuperTarget grocery/discount stores in the Twin Cities metro area. "What [Ulrich] makes in a year, we could provide health care for 6,000 workers for a year and a half. . . . People are getting hosed," said Bernie Hesse, an organizer for UFCW Local 789.

Citing documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Star-Tribune reports that Ulrich received total compensation of $19.2 million for the fiscal year ended Feb. 1, which included a $4.6 million bonus. In 2001, he received $16 million in total compensation, including a $3.7 million bonus, the newspaper reported.

I am a dork too. I wrote letters to Target and Walmart. This city council is totally out of control.
Smoking bans, fois gras bans, trans fat bans, retail store bans. What will they think of next?

These people have their heads so far up their keesters that they can see s@#t.

The city that works is going to be renamed the unemployed city.

lekzdomWhat's up with the Evergreen Park police? My 16 year old daughter, a brand new driver, was stopped by an EP officer for speeding on 103rd St. Of cpourse there is a sticker in the windshiled and she politely informed the officer that her daddy was a PO. It didn't matter a bit to him and he scratched out a $105 ticket. Four weeks later my little princess rolled through a stop sign at 100th and Central Park. Different copper, same result. Now, I am in no way excusing my daughter's poor driving. In fact I am thankful the police stopped her. I just find it somewhat odd that two different traffic stops involving two different EP officers someone didn't think they could give her a pass or a warning ticket or a lecture or even a phone call to me. Is there something going on between EP and CPD? I just don't understand the new breed of police officers. Giving the son, daughter, wife, mother, or father of a police officer a ticket is totally against everything I stand for and evrything I was taught when I came on the job....unless they beg for one. Can anyone enlighten me on what's going on in EP or were these isolated incidents.

I found out that having your daughter blow the cop will get better results than telling the cop her father is the police. Teach her some oral skills. She will also get a better man when she blows like a pro! You know she is already drinking and blow guys up at Mt. Greenwood park, so whats the difference is she blows a nice officer!

Maybe her violations were especially bad. How fast was she going? She rolled through the stop sign? Could she possibly have flew through the stop sign w/o even slowing down? How many times was she stopped by the CPD and given a break? You shouldn't be complaining about EPD. You should take her driving privliges away, before Jesse White does.

Some cops are a little harder on a young driver when they are already on a moving violation ticket. Some cops think that she should been even more careful while driving on a ticket. Not saying she should of got another ticket but being on ticket when she got stopped may have played a role in it.

She was going seven miles over. Maybe she did completely blow the stop sign....she says she didn't. I wasn't there. She has had her driving privledges restricted by someone much more powerful than Jesse White.

Wal mart and Target are fine for the suburbs. Lower standard of living out there. The city is to expensive for minimum wage jobs. If you thing a minimum wage job is a good source of income and your not in High School or retired and collecting some pension or 401K then you and your target need to get out of the city. And take this asshat of a mayor with you. Finally the alderman did something right.

You ever think your little angel maybe was rolling her eyes or talking with disrespect? Kids are COMPLETELY different when not in front of their parents.

And maybe at 16 she doen't need to be cruising the neighborhood in a fucking car.

Be a parent and not her friend. Two moving violations? I think a period of time without driving may remind her more than Daddy getting her out of the tickets.

Yes, that's quite possible. And I agree that she should have been more careful..... I just don't get this way police families are being treated these days. Maybe I'm a dinosaur who's time has passed.

You know, that's the first thought that came to my mind because that would certainly justify at least a ticket.....but she isn't likely to act that way. Believe me. I'm a realist and I know how kids can act but I've kept my kids in line their entire lives. I don't put up with any bullshit. But let's say for an instant that she did have an attitude. You know what I would have done? I would have called her father and let him know that his daughter was mouthing off to the police and the only rerason she was getting a "play" was because her daddy was the police and being shown mutual respect. I think "Daddy" would then set things right with the little angel.

I come from a police family and been the police for a long time. Mt. Greenwood is a pain in the ass. Everyone you pull over is either a cop/fireman or kids on one. I have never personally written any of them but some have a very bad additude when stopped by police. Believe me if I wasn't such a firm believer in professional courtesy, some of these violators not only would of been ticketed but locked up for their additudes.

If that was the same traffic stop I saw, she was with another white female and one black guy. I saw the FOP sticker and wonder what daddy would be thinking if he knew a shithead was in the car with his princess.

If I were you I would reach out to the EP officers (in a nice way) and find out exactly what happened. I have a feeling you will find out that your daughter wasn't as courteous to them as she is telling you. Two stops, two tickets...think about it. Ask the coppers they will tell you the truth, your daughter will tell you whetever it takes to keep her ride.

My son and wife has been pulled over by EP a few times. They love radar on 103rd Street. Each time they were given a pass. So maybe your daughter just has a bad apple cop from EP or there is more to the story. EP has been very nice to my family.

Well, Mayor, maybe you need to hire someone to clean up your city and departments. That includes the leaking ship called revenue dept. like i told you about, and get rid of the worthless people, job titles that are equally worthless, and start putting the city back into the positive.

Are you listening?

We are now at the age where we should not expect and professional courtesy. I have never given any coppers wives, kids, relatives or friends a ticket. How I was brought up. I got breaks once or twice cuz of my pops so I have returned the favor 10 fold. But your daughter (notice no angel, princess, baby dolls) is obviously not handling her responsibilities as a driver very well. Time for a home suspension via the real DMV , which is you. Don't expect coppers to give her a break, much less feel obliged to call you. I remember stopping a young lady, 19, FW, who proceeded to tell me her daddy was a Sgt. Thing is I knew her dad, was a good guy, but one who could be a spiteful mother fugger when he got angry. I cut her loose telling her to drive carefully, and proceeded to tell my partner, we will not be telling her father we stopped her, because then I'd feel obligated to tell him she was riding with dude as her passenger. If you don't know who your kids are with or where they are, thats your own damn fault. Watch them, if you don't nobody will.

Chief Corbitt of Willow Springs was getting more than $20.00 for dropping all those mob related stolen cars in the canal!

He didn't own that giant house and seven Corvettes on his 15,000 a year salary at Willow Springs PD.

But he got fucked in the end by his friends, the mob and the FBI.

There are quite a few fellow Chicago Police officers that were originally Willow Springs Officers under Corbitt. I know one is now a CPD Lt. a few CPD detectives and some others are P.O.'s.

None of them talked nor cooperated with the FBI and were never charged with anything.

12:51- Walmart does more than employ only minimum wage workers-and the "standard of living" is not a constant throughout the City. Can you pay for a mortgage on the Gold Coast make $8 an hour? Can you live in Englewood for that? I guess so since most of the residents there don't work at all.

8/04/2006 04:06:00 PM

If you are unintelligent, unreliable, untrustworthy and unfriendly and working as a stockboy, should your company be forced to pay you $10+$3 an hour? Or should that be up for the company to decide? The coppers who support this (lefty) are the lazziest coppers I know. Why? Because they love Unions and/or communism-anything that guarantees they can continue being a lazy waste of a city paycheck without worrying about their jobs. Right Lefty, you poor excuse for a cop who would have been fired from a department with any standards a long time ago?

They dont want to give their own employees benefits, and you think they will support some cop? You are nothing more than security to them. And if you raise a hand to a shop lifter in THEIR building, they will drop that tape on your head so fast.

Please get a clue.
