It's the Economy Stupid

  • Wall Street ended an erratic week with a big advance Friday after the Labor Department said employers added 128,000 jobs in August, signaling that an economic slowdown might not be as severe as some have predicted.
  • The added jobs, slightly more than the 125,000 economists expected, brought down the country's unemployment rate to 4.7 percent from a five-month high of 4.8 percent in July. During the past 12 months, wages grew by a strong 3.9 percent, the Labor Department said. The last time the figure was higher was in June 2001.
And here's a blog at engram-backtalk.blogpost.com that explains the current economic good times with lots of helpful pictures, charts and graphs. Yeah, it's kind of wonky policy type stuff, but what else do we have on a Saturday morning? The news out of SOS is sporadic at best.

Harvey mayor denies link to missing gun

September 2, 2006

BY FRANK MAIN Crime Reporter

Harvey Mayor Eric Kellogg insisted Friday that he didn't have anything to do with a gun that disappeared from the police department in a criminal case, but he vowed to discipline four officers involved in the incident and to retrain officers in how to inventory evidence.

Hollis Dorrough, a Harvey detective and son of a former Chicago Police sergeant, was charged with official misconduct last month in connection with the disappearance of the .45-caliber pistol. Police seized the gun last year after Anthony Reynolds pointed it at officers, prosecutors said.

At Dorrough's bond hearing, Cook County prosecutors said an unnamed Harvey official -- whom sources identified as Kellogg -- told Dorrough to return the gun to Reynolds. Dorrough gave the gun to Reynolds' stepfather, prosecutors said.

'I never was involved'

In June, prosecutors said they realized the gun was missing when Reynolds went to court on a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Reynolds also faces a murder charge stemming from a shooting this year while he was free on bond on last year's weapon charge. A .45-caliber pistol was used in the murder.

At a news conference, Kellogg acknowledged he met for about three hours Thursday with officials from the Illinois State Police and Cook County state's attorney's office. "I never was involved in a missing gun," Kellogg said. "I never told Detective Dorrough to hide a gun."

Dorrough told investigators that Kellogg instructed him to "give the boy [Reynolds] back his property," said Sam Adam Jr., a lawyer representing the mayor. But Kellogg denies meeting with Dorrough about the gun, Adam said.

Outside consultant considered

The Village of Harvey will take the unusual step of sending letters to defendants in former and current criminal cases that involved Dorrough -- warning them that he is now considered a "rogue cop," Adam said.

Responding to criticism over his handling of the police department, Kellogg pointed out that overall crime had dropped about 28 percent in the south suburb in 2005.

Still, the department may bring in an outside consultant to examine the department, Adam said. He said he contacted several Downstate police chiefs to submit proposals.

Cops shoot man on Southwest Side

Tribune staff report
Published September 2, 2006, 6:44 AM CDT

Chicago police shot and critically injured a 23-year-old man early today after he allegedly pulled a knife on them during a traffic stop on the Southwest Side.

Around 3:40 a.m. Saturday, two Chicago Lawn District officers in a marked car were driving on the 2700 block of West 59th Street when they noticed that a double-parked Jeep Cherokee did not have any plates, said police spokesman Pat Camden.

As the Jeep pulled away, the officers signaled the driver to stop with their car lights, Camden said. Instead, the driver turned right onto South Washtenaw Avenue and right again into an alley, where it pulled into a vacant lot at 2709 W. 59th St., Camden said.

While the Jeep was still moving, the male passenger jumped out, prompting the officers to exit their car, Camden said. At that point, the passenger allegedly pulled out a silver knife out of his waistband. One officer fired shots, striking the man in the stomach, Camden said.

The unidentified man was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Camden said.

"off the subject" NICE, I'm gonna to go to every Walmart around the Chicago area and buy all of the bb guns and air rifles I can get my grubby hands on and pass them out to all of the wonderful children in that area. It's the only smart thing to do, right? The so called parents think it OK that the kids have them. That's the plan... next O.T. check. Walmart, look out!

Lets say you get shot, what are the odds of being killed. Perhaps the parents are giving these kids BB guns and telling them to hit the streets and sitting back and waiting to see what happens. Then say they do get shot, its like winning the lotto. In some parts of the word women and children are used as human shields. Human lotto tickets.

Boo Hoo. We're sure that as soon as you got hired at your last three jobs, you went right to the top of the wage scales, right? Right? Bullshit lefty.

Minimum wage is an ENTRY level wage. You start at minimum wage and then you get raises, promotions and experience. Then you go and see what the market will offer someone of your experience, motivation and ability. Your communist utopia is nothing but a fantasy lefty - reality is much more unforgiving.

Not that I have sympathy for stick-up men

In 1995 the Legislature passed subsection of section 18 which is titled Aggravated Robbery

Where someone gives the impression by their words or actions that they are armed with a firearm, whether or not they actually are

This was done specifically for situations like the BB gun one

A happily retired retiree.

Hey there SCC. I know its difficult do come up with topics for a blog but if I wanted to talk or read about national politics I would look up some blog on CNN. Let's try to keep it local. If you're torn between north and south side topics, keep in mind, the south side is smelly and indusrial while the northside is akin to the renaissance (sp?). Keep your chin up.

Is it just the economy, or that politicians take from us to feed their campaign contributors who line their pockets.

I just spent $160 to refill prescriptions that used to cost $20, then $60.

Thank-you Richie!!!

What will we have to pay when I am retired?

What do our politicians pay, now and when they retire?

To leftisbest, The greatest thing about our system of government is that people such as yourself are allowed to start businesses and pay employees whatever you wish. You seem genuinely concerned about the people making minimum wage raising a family. I, for one, believe that people should consider their financial situation prior to having children to raise. The evil corporations that are moving to other countries in search of cheaper labor is so they can compete in a global economic environment. Again, there is nothing stopping you from starting a business here and paying high salaries. Who do you think would invest in that business? Communist Utopia, this is something that the rest of the world is moving away from and it appears that you would move towards this. There is nothing stopping you from exercising your right to give the government more of your money to support the social agenda that you support. However, as we all know, its never been about you believe as an individual but making everyone else conform to those beliefs.
Take a proactive step with your beliefs and start a company paying the wages that you believe that people deserve. Of course, we know that will never happen. You will continue saying what others should do. By the way NAFTA was passed under Bill Clinton with Bill Daley as the point man to get support which was rewarded with an appointment to Sec of Commerce.
The quickest way for individuals to show their belief is through their actions. It's time leftisbest for you to take action and create those high paying jobs that people who already have children need so they can raise the kids in a level that you think is adequate. Good Luck to you. You'll certainly need it. But as I said its not about what you want or believe its mandating that others conform to those beliefs through government intervention.

The fact still remains that the amount of living wage jobs are shrinking while low wage jobs are increasing.Wal Mart has replaced GM as our nation's largest employer. The influx of illegals drives wages down even further. The economy may be doing well(technically)but working people are losing ground every day.The middle class has been shrinking in the 21st century.Only the top 10% of Americans have seen a increase in income while the rest of us have either stagnated or lost ground. And the bad news is it's only going to get worse. We have become a debtor nation that is the worlds largest consumer of goods.Countries like China,Japan, and others are holding our IOU's. And the bill is just about due.
