What The Hell is Going On?
Not one, but two more police related shootings today. From Channel 7:
- A man is hospitalized in fair condition after a shooting with police officers in the South Austin neighborhood just after midnight. Police were responding to reports of a man with a gun when they stopped someone in a car on West Jackson near Laramie with that description. The man tried to runaway and led police and a foot chase.
The suspect was shot after he allegedly pointed a gun at the officers.
Good shooting. No one hurt except the bad guy.
Then, from our own comment sections, word of another shooting in the 011th District. No one hit on either side, but it seems that criminals are getting a bit bolder in pointing guns at the police lately. Anyone downtown have the statistics on how more or less often it's occurring that police are the subjects of Aggravated Assaults, Batteries and Attempted Murders?
We're betting it's up and probably up significantly. We know it feels like it's happening more - and perception is more than half the battle. If people think crime is happening more often and happening closer to home, they worry about it more. Cops are no different - and being closer to the ground level, maybe cops are even more susceptible to what we perceive as occurring on the street.

im glad the manpower in this department is used so effectivly. tonight on 004 on afternoons. not one single rapid car up, 3 seargents and one wagon. at one point there were 110 stacked jobs many hours old. but hey at least all the special and bs units have all the people they need.

Here is a big part of the problem (as I see it)...our hands have become tied, due to suits, cameras, and lefty. We have become a hands-off department. In the last few years, we can't chase cars, can't carry shotguns, and are on camera all the time. Even getting a curfew is a pain in the butt. Im not saying that you can't do policework on camera, but its getting really hard to justify good policework to a department that is more concerned with settling lawsuits and not making waves with lefty. Bad guys know this. Good guys stopped working. The younger bad guys have grown up in an environment where the police cannot police like they want to and need to. The is NO respect, becuase we cannot attain it....not so many years ago, "F@#@ you police!" was an absolute no no. Now, its commonplace. Used to be that when a block got out of hand, the WHOLE BLOCK of bangers sat in the clink. Gave em a little something to think about next time they thought about carrying on. Now, however, streetsweeping is a thing of the past. They stand wherever they want, for as long as they want, and guys like me that really want a pension drive by, shag em, hang a few parkers, and ride on calls. The mindset of the bad guy now is what do I have to lose by pulling out a gun that is 10 times more powerful than our 9mm? Ive been in a few shooting situations, and, let me tell you, I would REALLY have appreciated a shotun instead of my p shooter. It is unsonscionable that a major city like Chicago has citizens armed with ak 47s and the police armed with a 9mm.
I just have to wonder why I haven't heard anything about the shooting from Mary Mitchell.....no honor roll students sob story about the kid at the wrong place at the wrong time set up by the police. dear 11:53, I am from a special B.S. unit, and you are right to a point about manpower. The certain units used to come in and lock up a bunch of these gang banging punks, yes in 004, many guns were recovered and thugs locked up from 79th St through out the district. So these are not bullshit units, at least some of the police aren't. Just because they aren't answering the calls doesn't mean they aren't riding on them or their not gonna back up your ass in a minute. But, certain units are done now that some bosses have started a new regime! Out with the old and in with the new! The good police are being sent back to the districts, so maybe it will make a difference, or maybe not. Anyway, shit will never fuckn change! Good Luck.

It is a sad commentary on policing in this city when we have to ask these questions.
And the answer is yes, we WILL have to have a few cops get murdered by high-powered rifles before the topic will even come up.
Even then, Daley and the reverands won't let us have them. They prefer us to be out-gunned, godforbid we look like an occupying army in the ghetto! And don't even get me going on the terrible ammunition they restrict us to with our handguns!
This is just one of many reasons I am looking into other police departments. One where the police can be the police. Too bad the city is going to lose quality coppers because of policies like this (and many other reasons).

Unfortunately, the original poster is absolutely telling the truth. After 9/11, they put heavy weapons cars downtown and at the airports. The officers were under orders to have the weapons at hand and out of the cars around prominent landmarks and while walking at O'Hare. The picture of the copper carrying the rifles made the front page and Daley oredered all the weapons stood down. PAthetic.

The story stated this bounty was issued by a street gang and attributed the information to an alleged police source. No attempts were made to confirm the story with the Office of News Affairs or get an official response from the Chicago Police Department.
This form of rhetoric is extremely dangerous and puts the lives of every Chicago Police officer and the community in great danger. Giving a street gang this type of credence by legitimizing the issuance of a “bounty” for further criminal activity is irresponsible. There is no bounty on Chicago Police officers.

004th District needs all of the units it can get, specialized or on a beat car. I know that the New Breeds want to kill police officers, but all of these gangs want to kill police officers. The New Breeds are just being loud about it. 004, as much as the rest of the city, is short on manpower and has a ton of crap walking the streets. We have a tough job. Every extra body we get in 004 is a blessing. Just as every extra body you get in your district is probably a blessing for you. You cannot demand coverage in your district because you think your district is the worst. They are all bad and all need coverage.

It wasn't Doroniuk and it wasn't a "tact guy". The off-duty P.O. is a piece of shit who refused to identify himself to a UNIFORMED OFFICER. He then gave the Officer a shove and got what he deserved...a face full of pepper spray. The beef against the off-duty P.O. was sustained and he was suspended. Now he is suing the city! Finally, his 4X4 wife is a uselesss MERIT Sgt. in 022!

You can no longer carry the old six, eight, or 10 inch "magnums" of the 80's. Check it out. You can only carry a .38or .357 revolver, and you can only shoot the dept. issue .38 caliber semi-jacketed hollowpoints they give you at the range.
Yes, those long stainless and chrome magnums were quite the attention getters in their day, but let's face it: they were cumbersome, awkward, and a whole lot of gun to (a) pull out of those loooong holsters quickly, and (b) soot accurately, as the .41 and .44 magnums had super kicks. But if you were fortunate to hit someone with what flew out of those long barreled guns, the bad guys KNEW they were hit. Most couldn't even survive such a massive shock to the body, and bled to death. Nothing wrong with the .45's many of us carry today. alost as effective, less kick, and for those who choose to carry a "1 shot manstopper" off duty, you can buy them in some nice concealable barrel lengths, with alloy frames.
Don't lie about what happened with the 022nd District Sgt.'s husband in the parking lot of 022. He sat in his car with their child in the back seat. Never left his auto until the 022nd Dist. guys approached. Had a POLICE MEDALLION around his neck, and was pepper sprayed and cuffed for NOTHING, under the allegation that the officers involved believed he was "tampering with an Escalade parked in the 022nd District parking lot." Officer M never exited his vehicle while waiting for his wife with their child in the backseat. He's NOT a "piece of shit," he's a decent copper, a devout Christian, and an all around good guy. I've never even heard the guy swear at anyone, in public or private. He had no disciplinary record before this incident. Personally, I'm glad the guy is suing. He was treated like crap by some of his own so-called "brethren in blue," who closed ranks and sandbagged the man with the BS "sustaining" of the CR. I can't say for certain if this 022nd Dist. piece of crap who recently made front page news for stealing was involved or not, but I hope Officer M is generously compensated for the humiliation he sustained that night. Another black eye for 022, and, unfortunately, the CPD as well.

Don't Lie??? I was on the scene about 30 seconds after this incident happened. Ask the FOP's secretary DAVIS, a M/1 who was a witness and gave a statement stating C.M. exited his vehicle and approached the Officers in a threatening manner and was 100% in the wrong! S.D heard the Officers repeatedly ask C.M that if he was the Police to show an I.D. which he refused. As for the medallion, C.M. did not have this medallion exposed when the incident occurred. The "medallion" conveniently appeared while in the 022nd District. And since when is a "medallion" that any mope can buy in a jewelry store a proper form of I.D.? You sound like a complete tool who heard the story fourth-hand. If you want the facts, ask S.D. of the FOP, who was the only independent witness there! C.M. was suspended due to the sustained C.R. from this incident, and how ironic, was suspended a short time later in another incident for insubordination. Sounds like a great guy......

There are some of us that have been around enough to know this job is nothing but a Patronage job. And every Bosses kid, or clout heavy guy, wants to be a SWAT guy, "or whatever the hell you call it".
So...... there probably are some capable guys on this "whateverthefuck" team you call it. If its like the rest of this Dept. then its probably around 20% with the rest being clout and blowjob broads.
20+ years and Ive never seen our SWAT team, or whateverthefuck its called. The incidents have always been long over first.
