Channel 2, Channel 5, Channel 7, Tribune coverage.
Evidently, OCD or an attached unit interrupted some gangbangers on the way to a hit. A gun battle ensued and two bad guys are dead along with a third wounded. Hopefully, he dies too. A cop was wounded in the hand and our wishes go out to him for a speedy recovery. We pray he doesn't lose too much meat or mobility in his hand and can be on the street again shortly.

UPDATE (just prior to publication): Channel 7 is reporting that the officer lost his middle finger as a result of this shooting. No word on whether it was his gun hand or non gun hand, but again, our thoughts and prayers go out to him. We've known at least 3 nine-fingered coppers in our careers, so hopefully we won't be missing this officer from the streets for too long.

Today was a beautiful day to work on the westside. The morale-o-meter rose a little bit, but im sure it will be gone tomorrow. Regardless, i am proud to be the CPD today!!! Thank you boys in BLUE!!!

I have been saying this for a while. Today's events are all the more reason we need REAL firepower in the squadcar. Supt. Cline, please give us a fighting chance, we need those rifles.
Luckily, no coppers lost their life today. SWAT is nice and they serve their role, however, we all know they cant be everywhere when a rifle is needed. We are seeing alot more .223 casings at these ghetto shootings.
I would GLADLY pay for ALL expenses associated with the purchase and training for an "equalizing" weapon that the department would authorize for "on-duty" carry, secured in the beat car. It would be completely optional and voluntary (just like an auxilary weapon), and it would start in PATROL!!!

I hope that the injured officer recovers quickly. Thank goodness no other officers are hurt. The funeral was for the mother of the commissoner of the airport. So you figure it out...Shit like this should be looked into, its a pain in the ass just to get one car for a funeral.. and they were given half a watch. Retired police men die all the time and they don't even get that kind of send off, sorry excuse for city politics and a waste of money and manpower...
I thought Ak-47's were banned in Chicago, I know the police can't own one just check the general orders. Wow how did these guys get one? The injured Officer is outstanding in everyway. He remained in good spirits and took the injury in stride. The SWAT Sort car did an excellent job along with the on scene gang intelligence officers. Everyone, including most of the bosses, came together well and handled a difficult situation. The gang intel officers had new Bernelli tactical shotguns and the sort guys were utilizing M4s. Both weapons were used to their full capacity very appropriately. There were a few glory hounds who acted out of place, but that was on a very limited basis. All and all it was a well planned investigation that ended in victory for the CPD. Now let's support the injured Officer and his family, and ensure the living offender rots in prison!

However, forget the "cherry spot", give him the money. The officer that is loosing a finger should be promoted to Sgt. first! The dept. should be ready to promote by the end of the month. His name should be on the Merit list, and not have to worry about the "Investigatory Training" class.

Apparently the Gang Intelligence Section received information that these three gangbangers were going to execute a "hit" on an unsuspecting female "cop groupie" known for posting endless nonsense on various police related web sites.

If the Justice Department wanted to help police departments with rising crime, it would increase federal funding, Frazier said, adding that "anything else is another academic exercise."
Justice Department officials said they planned to select cities over the next several weeks based on size and geographic location. After completing the review, the department will determine how best to match federal programs with certain cities and will fund new programs "where necessary."
Investigators will study trends such as gang violence, drug distribution networks and juvenile crime.
"The smart government approach is to figure out what are the factors that are contributing to the spike in those particular communities," said Tasia Scolinos, a Justice Department spokeswoman. "Once you identify what those factors are, you're better able to determine where to put your resources and programs."

Well stated. It is a sad commentary when you see that most suburban police departments, who have a fraction of the crime, are packing automatic rifles. The odds are much greater that we will need them than them.
Hell, at least give us out shotguns back!!
The City won't let us have the firepower we need because it would cost too much money to purchase the rifles and let's face it, who votes for the democratic machine in the city? You think they are going to risk the ghetto vote by giving the P.O.'s rifles/shotguns?
The sad thing is that it wouldn't cost the city a dime if they approved it. We could purchse the rifles ourselves and train/qualify ourselves. I know many a coppers who would glady shell out the money.
But we are a REactive department, no a PROactive one. It will take a few coppers getting murdered when .223 rounds pierce their vests and kill them for this discussion to even come up. Even then, we still won't win.

I left CPD for a full pension in January, and took a Chif's job in a burb; one of the first things I was asked was if I was going to pull the M-4s from the cars. I was delighted to tell them that not only did the M-4s stay, but everyone had to qualify with them and the 12 gauges that are also in each and every car. No if's ands or buts. I tried to get m-4s for all the supervisors while I was in OCD, but the lack of testicular fortitude on behalf of legal affairs leadership stopped it. Thanks God the officers are OK, and the bad guys NOT!

Have you ever seen a M4 the Dept/SWAT has, you obviously haven't, they all have 30 rd mags standard, just a little FYI.
I wish, they would let us buy our own ar-15, like we have to buy our duty weapon, and let us carry it as our secondary weapon. Maybe have to qual twice a year with the rifle because its a different type of weapon. They should issue us both our pistol and rifle, but that ain' gonna happen.

If you don't beleve me just ask the Area Four dicks that stopped in back of Tylers GTO on Augusta Blvd. two nite ago! The SIG is a durable, accurate pistol as well. But I prewfer the Beretta. If I had more money sixteen years ago I might have bought the stainless version made in Italy, but the American maded version is tops. I'm assuming you'll be able to manage to read my entire post since you apparently didn't make it through Mark Brown's entire column.
Mark Brown is anything but a police hater and has even lent his support by volunteering at benefits for injured CPD officers. But, perhaps you weren't there to see him.
If you'd taken the time to read read the entire column, you'd note that he wrote at one point, "When you tell people you're a reporter, they often say, 'That must be exciting,' but it's usually not."
Then he concluded the column by writing, "Looking for an exciting job? Join the police."
And for the Phat Phil crowd, he even mentioned how short the Supt. is.
Liberal? Yes. Police hater? Not by a longshot.

I did read his entire column and just because he says we have an exciting job does not take away from the fact that he ran out of the news room because he thought he had an opportunity to bash the police over the "Pellet gun".
I guess 2 dead offenders that shot at officers with a semi automatic rifle and a P.O. that had been shot isn't as important a story to him as a pellet gun story.

Not all cops are shy about carrying the long guns. The Area 2 Gun Team officers are all qualified to carry the Dept. issue Remington 870 pump, and they take them out on all search warrants.
I hear the Sgts. on the teams have shotgun cards too. I think all
investigative teams (including tact) should have them! Wish I worked on that Area 2 team...I saw them working a SW out here in 005 this summer, and they handled their business.
I am shotgun qualified but was denied a shotgun by the Lt. when I went to sign one out for a search warrant.This comes from S.O.S. before all this shit hit the fan.It appears that card is just another useless piece of paper like our F.O.P. membershipcars-They mean nothing!
The officer involved in this shooting did a great job! He did the right thing and should get the Police Medal and a Meritorious promotion. But my fellow officers, I know you want to do the right thing, BUT DON'T PUT THE NAMES OF OFFICERS INVOLVED IN SHOOTINGS ON THIS BLOG, and SCC you should try to screen them when they do. If you must identify anyone, use initials only. There are people who read this site who don't like us and wish to do us harm. There are numerous search engines out there that can be used to locate people. There is a reason that the Department does not give out this information. Please think before you write.
The sad thing is that it wouldn't cost the city a dime if they approved it. We could purchse the rifles ourselves and train/qualify ourselves. I know many a coppers who would glady shell out the money.
Hell, just let me register the one I already have. I'll even get "properly trained" on my own time.

More good news: One of the Honchos of the New Breed repeatedly stabbed himself when police arrived to arrest him. This whimpering cowardly fuck cant stand the thought of prison for life. What a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
