Results Are Out

No, not the Sergeants test results - keep dreaming! We aren't expecting those for another 3 weeks.

No, we're talking about the results for Part 1 of the Lieutenants Exam. A couple of e-mails and comments tipped us off and we hopped over to SecondCitySarge to see if they were covering it. They weren't - yet. So we'll start - anyone Sergeant readers want to 'fess up to their results?

We heard there are some failure notices being sent out, which makes this an unusual test as every single test taker passed part one with flying colors. We also heard the results are out of 230 or 240 possible points. Rest assured, whoever scored at exactly the cutoff number will be promoted far sooner than anyone who wasn't a top 30 score.

This also means that there will probably be one more class of Lieutenants off the old list before the end of the year. Look for a merit letter shortly.

230 was passing according to the Earnest and Young letter. Part 2 is 6 Jan 2007.

I passed at 188.5

What sucked about Part 1 was the "MOST LIKELY and LEAST LIKELY" scenarios. Also the "Handle the Situation" scenarios. There was absolutely no way to study for these 2 portions of the test.

Whatever happened to the good old days...a $5000.00 'contribution’ to your Alderman, a wink and a nod and you wuz promoted. Nowadays, to get a “merit” promotion, you need ???????

10/28/2006 04:25:00 PM

A meritless promotion is worth $50,000 easy during the course of a PO's career. The merit selection process is done in secret with NO accountability. If it were legitimate, why would they hide the process behind closed doors. Why not open the merit selection meetings to the public or publish a transcript of the meeting? If they were proud of their merit selections, why not let everyone know who they are and why they were chosen. This is public money and affects public safety, there should be some level of accountability. There is no reason why this process cannot be changed. The current method is like a giant cancerous tumor on the morale of the honest working police.

200 (20%) out of 1000 Detectives were Meritless promotions
390 (30%) out of 1300 Sergeants were Meritless promotions
84 (30%) out of 280 Lieutenants, were Meritless promotions
100 out of 100 Exempts and Captains were Meritless promotions
That’s 774 Meritless promotions with ZERO accountability, all done behind closed doors. Using the previous poster’s number of each promotion being worth 50 grand over the career of the PO promoted, probably a low number, these promotions account for 38 million dollars given away to politically connected hacks, instead of to hard working and honest police officers whose hard work and talent goes unrewarded. I will say that some merit promotions are well deserved, but they are definitely the exception.

Amen brother. No wonder we are the laughing stock of big police departments. After all, we do have 13,800 officers. If I hear Phil utter that bullshit again I think I may puke.

Didn't they say like three months to get the results back from the Sgt test? I know 35/Michigan has to get the list first so they can get those erasers out and tailor it to their liking for the clout babies.

Time to change the testing process! Let's get a triple blind test in there and the testing company posts the results without anyone in the city seeing them first. Then people who actually DESERVE it may get promoted.

Who am I kidding, that won't happen in this ceasepool of a city.

FUCK the Democratic Machine!!

186 out of 230, passing at 80.1%, 76% was passing for the Sgt's, that would put passing for this part at 175, but that s just using logic, so passing could be anything that get the "right" persons made

I was told by someone at personnel that the cut off was based on a curve and determined by Earnst and Young, not the city. Who knows the truth, just like we were supposed to get a copy of the test when we left part 1. It even said it in the study guide but they did not give you anything. Makes you say Hmmmm. I expected as much.

If there are 800 detectives and they make a class of 100...20% meritless means 80 passed the test. The new total is 900 detectives with 20 meritless. 50 then get promoted to Sgt and 50 retire. They make a new Detective class of 100 with 20% meritless. Now there are 900 detectives with 40 meritless. The next class has 100 with another 20 meritless and now we have 900 detectives with 60 meritless.

Assuming that this process has been going on for years and years it can be said that the majority of detectives are actually meritless because they would have been promoted out of the division if they were not. This is the reason that you have so many people who have been detectives for years and years but they still couldn't detect a smell in the bathroom.

Don't get to hyped up over these Lt. scores on pt.1. The City probably already has their plan for throwing some shit in the game for the next phase(s)and they just want to keep your interest peaked. 1987 - Lt. exam, part 1 turned out to be a pass/fail when they saw the "breakdown". Part 2 -short answer - the old "Notify the W/C" trick if I recall right, which still is the wrong answer unless you were a "connected guy" and put it down . Part 3- oral board with same questions as on part 2 asked of you by an exempt(3 on Board). I believe you had the right to exclude 1 exempt you didn't want on your board. I should've cut Elijah Cook, that's the one he fell asleep at. Finished product - Coffey and 4 or 5 other klutzes finishing in the top 10. Words like "standardizing" and "race norming" were popular back then. Old timers should remember.

Hm. Old school? More like no school (Thime, Sleaves). You most certainly will look foolish running in circles, but I guess that really does exemplify promotional material for CPD. That settles it! I'm going to find a punk ass and run some circles around him. Maybe I'll yell, "Hey, luk at me! Me are the reel poliss! Perhaps some stripes will fall onto my sleeves?

You must have worked a different west side. The one I worked in, you needed a homicide pinch or at the least a robbery pattern arrest to get a D/C.
