Another Scandal?

We said months ago while the SOS scandal was breaking, to batten down the hatches - it's going to be rough sailing ahead. As pointed out by numerous sharp eyed readers who saw the Sun Times article, something else is brewing:
  • In one intriguing wiretapped conversation, Doroniuk allegedly called five Chicago Police officers "stupid" for getting arrested after stealing $1 million from a suitcase with their fingerprints on it that they then left in their car. No such arrests have been made public. A police spokeswoman would only say "the investigation is ongoing."
We've heard from various sources that a few police officers are going to be caught up in this one, including a Sergeant and Lieutenant. We also heard, months ago, that the suitcase in question was located via an embedded tracking device in a vacant lot within a block or so of the Homan Square facility.

Of course, we could be confusing our scandals. There has been so much bullshit published in our comments sections about the assorted forms of malfeasance being perpetrated at various times all over the city. But this one seems a little too close to the descriptions of something going on over at the 2nd floor of Homan Square. We're afraid the weather is getting rougher and we haven't even reached the eye of this particular hurricane yet. Hang on.

This Department has no one to blame for this but itself. And we wonder why the mayor and the citizens don't like or trust us. Just look at some of the people that Cline has promoted, and some of the people that have gone to these specialized units. Time for Cline and his lackeys to leave.

don't know where to put this, so here goes.
I've got about 5 years on and am starting to feel that this job is not for me. I've worked in a pretty fast district on the south side the whole time and am starting to come to the realization that i don't know if i can make it another 20 years. I feel like a lot of the comroderie is slipping away, even just from when i've come on. I like a lot of my coworkers, but i don't consider them "my brothers," like the way the old timers say it used to be. I don't come home pumped up and laughing anymore. It's just another day now. It seems like everyday is kind of molding into one long tour. I've lost my sense of drive and excitement for the job and i don't know how to get that back, or if i even can. Please don't take this as bragging b/c it most definitely is not, but i feel like i've seen just about everything out there by now and can handle just about most jobs i get. There's no more eagerness to get to a crime scene to see what it looks like. I could care less about chasing down some clown for a bag of whatever. These calls have become so mundane. Just same thing every day all day long. I've finally realized that most people really dislike us and could care less about what happens to us, all the while we put our lives on the line to rush to their jobs every day. I just don't know anymore if it's worth it. Is this a normal feeling? Are there others out there that feel this way and what could be a rememdy? I'm not depressed or in any way thinking about doing something stupid to myself (just to clarify in case that's whay some of you were thinking), but i'm just tired of the same old thing. Maybe i need a change. Meet some new people, eat at some new places. Can some of you guys with some time on please help me out on this one. What are some of my options? I could use a little guidance and i know you are the guys to come to. I think these are the things that this blog could be most helpful with and it's great to have an outlet to do this anonymously. Thanks in advance, from a tired young guy.

Those two 22nd district coppers are really stupid. You got what you deserve. It's a shame that your giving heat to your lt, sgt and fellow tact guys that had absolutely NO idea what you had planned out. A sgt is pretty much always involved in the execution of a search wrt. It's now also a G.O. that your LT accompany you on the execution of the wrt. For as all they are concerend, you obtained the wrt on good faith and info and they were supporting and backing you up. So F**K you for sucking them in YOUR troubles.

Coppers like the both of you make ALL of us look bad. The public trust is broken "yet" again....

The T.A.R.A. class is awesome. Everybody in the city should take the 5 day class. It's long overdue. Shame on the city for taking sooooo longgggg after Sep 11th 2001. My hats off the all the instructors. They may not have a lot of time on the job as CPD but all of them have extensive military experience. They all have gone to class regarding all the shit they teach. I give it an A- for an overall score.

I have to say I'm pretty embarassed and ashamed that the TWO male black officers that I think are from 005, sat in class for most of the week "ASLEEP". Thanks for wearing your hoody in class. thanks for wearing your baseball cap to the side, thanks for wearing you pant leg up, thanks for talking on your blue tooth wireless during numerous sessions of the class. Boy oh Boy! How disrepectful! How embarrasing! How tipical! It's obvious you both gave a rats ass on what was discussed and taught in the class. You didn't even look around you to all the guys and gals that shook their heads at you everyday. It came down to an instructor to yell at you and you still didn't get it. You both are a joke. It's guys like both of you that give the CPD a bad name. I'm glad the class is over today so you both can go back to 5 and do abosutley nothing while at work other than talk on your stupid cell phone and dress and act like thugs.

R. Doroniuk, I always wondered exactly how long it would take for you to get fired or sent to jail. Now I know, 6 years and 10 months. You know who is to blame for this? Every instructor in the academy who would give him that funny look when he did stupid shit. Every SGT in 022 that overlooked his antics and the W/C who signed his arrest reports knowing exactly what he was all about. I guess that last incident or the one before that, were he pepper sprayed some sgts wife in the parking lot wasn't enough of a red flag!!! And Don't forget the commander, nice work on putting him on the tac team! Another management position given to one of the biggest fuck ups!!! Why does it always seem like the biggest goofs and scandals come out of positions that are either management or clout? Hope you rot in jail, yours truly 00-1B

They have to put up with all this bullshit and for what-so they can reap the rewards of some screwball coppers taking money-some shithead coppers that are too freaken greedy-I am so tired of this -wake the hell up people-if you wanted a high paying job then what they hell are you doing on the CPD-move the hell to Miami and sling some dope while you get the tan

Still trying to feel proud to be a Chicago Police Officer (the greatest job in the world), but it's getting harder all the time...

Remember that Sgt. in Hill Street Blues, the guy who always said at the end of roll call "...hey, let's be careful out there"? Do you think if they remade that show today he'd say "...hey, let's try to obey the law out there"?

It's just sad....

Gee, let's take a look back at all these scandals that are brewing. I don't mean to sound like some kind of standards-based education, tree-hugging, left-wingging, goof ball but "what is the root of the problem?"

Reread the postings SCC labeled as the Biggest Problems in the Department #1 through #6. There is the root of the problem.

I just reread them myself, and I believe every one of these scandals was able to happen due to the problems outlined.

Great work SCC, I'm looking forward to #7 and more...

This department has to figure something out regarding tact teams/specialized units because there is wayyyyy too much freedom. NO, I don't think that every tact guy/gal is dirty, but there has been a pattern of the type of officers really f-ing up lately:

They have been on a specialized unit or on a gang/tact with little or no supervision.

Nowadays, beat cars are too busy getting bus checks, getting hassled by the Sgts/inspectors, beat meetings, handling domestics, arrests, accidents, park checks, movers, parkers, and BS event numbers to go around stealing money. Beat cars only get ½ hour for lunch while special people get all the time in the world and can go to the other side of the city without getting jammed up. Can anyone honestly say with a straight face that the supervisors actually logged these people in SOS before the sh*tstorm occurred?

This is not sour grapes for never getting on a team or specialized units, I don't care and after all of this, heelll nooo. I'll keep my beat car any day over the MCC. This is junior high with guns and I'm glad these jag balls are in the trick bag with the other idiots from SOS.

By the way, does anyone know the real story with the off duty PO picking up his SGT. wife involving this tool (Doroniuk) with the girlfriend that looks like a she male you would see on 26th street on a Sunday night? Talk about trash!!!

Well Richard Doroniuk has finally bitten the dust. I Figured he would be fired for maybe planting drugs, excessive force or something like that but never for taking money. When he came to 022 he was basically a reckless, race hating, woman bashing, ignorant, low down piece of crap. 95% of the people on the watch refused to work with him. When I heard about the incident invovling Off. Moore in the first thing I asked was did it involve Rich. When I heard about the shooting of Betts I was skeptical from the get go about the way it "actually" a occured. Oh well now I can rest knowing that this corrupt poor excuse for a cop is finally off the streets. May he rot in jail.

Hey tired young guy, get out! you are just burned out of your south side district, it is normal, you need to move on and see what else is out there. Try to get to a unit like TRU, vice, narcotics, etc so you can see how things are city-wide. If that is not feasible for you just bid up north, 012, 013, 018, 001, 019, see how the other half lives, you will eat good, meet new people and still see some action from time to time. THis is just two cents worth from a guy with over 10 yrs. on. Good luck and remeber, this is still the greatest show on earth....

Hmm red flags? There were so many red falgs with R. DumbAss that a blind person could've seen it. I myself blame the white shirts. When officers mysteriously get sick when paired with this ass or take 7 hrs on the end that should've been enough to warrant some type of intervention. And this was when he was a PPO !!!!How many PPO's do you know of that nobody wants to work with? When officers like myself who have almost come blows with this knucklehead over his dumb antics that should've been enough to warrant some type of intervention. But no they allowed him to continue with his bullshit. Nevermind we'll just reward him by giving him a tact position with less supervision so he can run wild. No sympathy here they allowed this shit to manifest. They fucked over the good officers in the district running them out tact/district, denying their time, making them blow the box (remember this, it was not good, no pun intended)

Well, I'm sure it's there. But first you must factor out people, or groups of people, that don't share your enthusiasm to do police work. If you have a really, really good partner whose is energetic, smart, and tough you'll keep your spark. You sound like you're ready to take a dicks test. We have plenty of comraderie in the D. And smart bosses, generally. In the mean time do what I do. Pop open a Becks Octoberfest, watch the Flintstones, study for a promotional exam and screw every hottie that walks.

A parolee stopped by Maywood Officer Thomas Wood before Wood was shot to death was being interviewed by investigators Thursday, sources told the Sun-Times.

The parolee, who has been convicted of drug charges and for eluding police, was taken into custody Wednesday night, sources said. He was picked up because investigators checked the computer terminal on Wood's police vehicle and learned he had stopped the parolee, a source familiar with the investigation said.

The parolee is not the only person to come under the spotlight in Wood's killing.

"I know officers have interviewed a number of witnesses and persons of interest and one of those may have been a former police officer,'' Mobley said. "They have not ruled anything out.''

Mobley did not identify which department the officer served, but several sources said he was a former Maywood cop.

------------------------------------
A former Maywood cop potentially having something to do with the murder of a current Maywood cop.

I couldn't imagaine that. Not in that ceasepool! Did you see the press conference after the officer was killed? The fucking mayor couldn't even answer basic questions such as when was the last time a Maywood cop was killed in the line of duty. He just walked the fuck off the stage without answering! I hope this is not what happened, but one can't be shocked with these shitty corrupt suburbs run by losers.

10/27/2006 08:46:33 AM asked:

"By the way, does anyone know the real story with the off duty PO picking up his SGT. wife"

I was there right after it happened.

Officers had a car in the lot with a suspected trap. While they were working on it, the sgt's husband from SOS,I believe, pulled into the lot a short distance away, facing them. He didn't get out of the car. Because the po's thought it might be a tail car for the trap car, Doroniuk and another unnamed officer, both in full uniform, went up to investigate. The off duty po got in their face and was ignorant. He never identified himself or said what he was doing there. He then pushed one of the on duty-in uniform- officers. Thats when he got sprayed.

The whole incident was witnessed by a FOP board member.

Doroniuk and others were exonerated. The off duty po, a merit sgt's wife (both haters) took major time for it. They are both now sueing the dept. Makes sense to me---do wrong, be found guilty but still sue the dept.

In that incident, Doroniuk was in the right.

In the recent one-he's toast.......

Bored after 5 yrs. It's relatively normal in patrol, comes and goes. Sometimes bidding into another district or unit or switching watches can help the doldrums, look for unit postings and apply, having a partner sometimes helps as well. Best advice go back to school and further your education for a potential new career if you later desire to move on. In the meantime consider picking up a easy part time job, take a self defense class, etc., volunteer your time, always look for new eating establishments, travel and enjoy life outside of the job. Avoid frequent drinking. Keep your guard up and stay safe.

TO: TIRED YOUNG GUY

I wish I know the solution to help you out - but it seems to happen to all of us at some point. Have you considered a transfer, or application to a different unit? I know that a lot of districts, and practically all the units get bashed here - but a transfer can shake things up a little bit for you, and maybe get you back on track. This really can be the greatest job in the world - but right now, morale is at an all time low. Hopefully we won't have much farther to go before we hit bottom and start heading up again.

I can only say hang in there. There are a lot of reasons to be bitter on this job, but just as many to enjoy it. I hung in there and made detective and now sergeant WITHOUT clout or a merit spot. ( contrary to what you read here, it is VERY possible ) Along the way I met some good guys who I trust with my life...and others who I wouldn't want to be in the same room with.

If you are just miserable everyday, then maybe you should look elsewhere. But I think you just have them 5 year blues. Maybe a change of District would do you some good, at least give a change. Every District is like it's own Department. There are a lot of different "spot" opportunites out there that people never even try to capitalize on. They just get complacent crying "poor me" and don't even try to get themselves out of the rut.

Good luck to you in whatever you decide. "Don't let the bastards get you down"!!!

Tired young guy, I was just like you. I worked a beat car and tact and just got worn out by the low morale, questionable decisions by the brass and hard time getting promoted, despite being well educated. Anyway, I got a masters applied around the country and became a police chief (on my second police chief job)- yep from being a regular CPD police officer. I stayed on the CPD for 15 years and moved on. I have little stress and live in a beautiful area.

If this is not an option for you, I would suggest that you find a good partner and try moving to different districts or trying a unit. Make yourself known, do good work and positive things will happen. I wish I had taken my own advice back then - but it worked out for me.

I miss Chicago and the CPD. Contrary to what you might hear, elsewhere in the country, the CPD is a very well-respected police department. It's unfortunate that the few disparage the majority with their misplaced decisions and corrupt actions.

Good luck to you, stay safe and be strong.

Start the five year plan,
every five years find a gig in the district/unit you are in, or bid to a new district.

If you have a phone call make it.
Don't listen to anyone that may give you crap if you do have a call to use. Play by their (the depats.) rules. Remember, the bosses need workers. If you get mooved to a good spot by a boss you will owe them nothing but good work. Finaly, anyone that tells you that is B.S. hasn't got a phone call and most likey does B.S. while at work.

When detaining a felony suspect, would the U.S. Supreme Court invoke the Eighth Amendment in ruling that subjecting the suspect to a non-stop audio/video loop of local political TV commercials as "cruel and unusual punishment."

I would. Sheer TORTURE!

No network TV for me until after November 7th. I'm reading good books. I've already voted early for the far lesser of two evils: Topinka and Peraica.

May all these insufferable Democrats and Republicans burn in Hell. Justice cries out for a bounty on Democrats.

To the "tired young guy"....I wouldn't consider myself an old timer, but I have over 15 years on the job and will give the little advise that I have. Don't Quit. What you hear and sometimes read from coppers is just their way of venting. Try not to let it get you down. You have a great career that many other people would give their arm for. If you're tired of the District/Unit you're in then try to bid out. Go somewhere where there is a variety of people in the community. Don't always sit in a ghetto just to tell people you're the real police. Move on. It's time. You've done your time. Keep trying until you succeed in getting out of there. Try to get into a Unit if you can. Apply for any open positions you read about. Take every test you can. Study for those tests and don't rely on anyone. That way you'll have no one to thank but yourself when you make it. It can be done. Contrary to what some believe there are a few of us that have been promoted and land on our feet....without the clout. I studied my ass off and made it. You are not alone in the way you feel about the job. You're "honeymoon" stage is over. You're no longer a wide eyed recruit. Take your experience and help some of these new guys on the job. Teach them how to be the police.
Again, you're not alone. We all go through that. You'll continue to go through it even later in your career. This job has a lot to offer. Don't let all the bull shit you read and hear get ya down.
This is still an honorable profession. Don't let a few bad apples drag you down. Don't forget to maintain your relationships outside the department. All your friends shouldn't only be the police.
Anyhow....enough of my rambling. Don't quit.
Good luck to you in whatever your decision is.

Kudos to all of you who offered your advise. I don't care how much b.s. people write. This is still the best job.

Transfer to a new District in a new Area. You'll feel like a P.P.O. all over again. It will be exciting and new again.

Make a move every 3-5 years. To keep things fresh! Plus you'll meet many wonderful people..remember this is a BIG department. Think of it this way, 25 Districts=25 Years on-the-job. Spend a year in each and you're well on your way to a pension!

Good luck. I plan on taking this advice soon myself!

Bla! bla! bla! bla! If they were allowed in by the proctor's of the classes and they weren't stop by Academy Administration People.. why are you boring everybody else with your pricky ass atttitude. You had your chance to say something, you went a whole week and your scared ass didn't say a word, like most cowardly complainers you waited and hope somebody else woud do it for you.......... You still got a chance, write out a to-from to whom ever is in charge of these classes and have them put a directive in the C.O. book stating that all M/1 or F/1 attending any in service training must wear blond crew cuts, blue contact lens, gabardine clothings and drive a saturn...With all the shit! that going on in this department, here you come with some weak ass excuse of how fucking embarass and ashamed that you were, because some equally pricky assholes don't live up to your shity assed expectation, as you say and spell it "HOW TIPICAL" asshole!

Take a couple years in a nice slow place to either decide to 1. stick around, cant believe we get paid to do this, or 2. For whatever unforseen, illogical reason, bid back to a cesspool. Glad to hear the TARA training was well received. It is very unappreciated by most. Excellent knowledge given by excellent instructors. I work right above them at Near North and I "feel your pain" when it comes to "typical sleeping students". It's not easy to talk to, let alone teach to, in service. Recruits are easier, but when was the last time a P.O. at in service training was made to write a To From for being late or knock out some push ups for sleeping? As far as the Sgt. responsible for allowing this, hey c'mon we're all adults (some more than others)and we treat everyone as adults. Those that care to better themselves by learning, will definately benefit from it. Those that don't care about training and have to be there because they were ordered to will come away with nothing. Open minds can be a dangerous tool in this department, take advantage of whatever training given by the dept. God Bless and stay safe

Tired Young Guy, lots of good advice thrown your way. Don't wait too long though. You will hate this City even more when (if) you get married, start having kids and paying tuition. If you have your degree. . . walk. I am now too close to 20 to walk away. The Command Staff of this dept. are almost all merit and no street. Blackberry this! I'm thinking of leaving at 20. And. . .I'm in a rather good unit, knocking down over 90K a year. It doesn't go far in this city, trust me. But do try a nicer district first. It is a world of difference. Been on this job 30+ what your going thru is "burn out" Spent 25 yrs in patrol working a westside district, about every 5 years I ended up feeling like you do now so I'd bid out to a slower district and a change of scenery. After a year in the slow district my batteries would be recharged and I'd bid back to my old ghetto district.I did that for 25 years and by the luck of the draw I got called up for another unit that I put in a request for years before.Once I was out of patrol I thought I had died and went to heaven.I actually fell in love with the job all over again.Adult supervision, got treated like an adult, great comraderie with the people I work with,no numbers game, just do your job and everyones happy. Can't ask for anything more.My first advice is to get the hell out of patrol, easier said than done I know, but at least bid out to another district you need a change of scenery and a differant clientel to work with. You'll do OK just hang in there. Stay safe and back each other up.

I have met a lot of good people over the years in many districts and they have remembered me and have helped me because I worked. In turn I have actually been able to help some of those people. Also Don't Believe the Crap that you cannot make Rank without knowing someone. I made Det. off the list and really enjoy it. I have no plans to take another test. Tired Young Guy:
I'm glad to see that although you are suffering from a mild case of
absolutely normal 5yr burnout, that you want to rejuvenate your true Police Spirit. I'm also glad to see that our brother Officers
give you good advice, instead of ridiculing you, which is too common, both on the Job and on this blog. Yes, it is time for a change. With only 5yrs, you will have a hard time getting to any of what are commonly regarded as the "very good Districts". So what you should do at this point is find out which Districts, of the ones that you CAN get to with
5yrs, have one or more "Good Watches".
Go to one of these. Do Not go blindly. Do your homework. When you have made a couple of selections, go and see those Watch Commanders and let them know your'e
interested in coming over to work their Watch, if they will have you.
On any "Good Watch" in the city, the WC gets a good number of the people he wants. (Of course he dosen't get nearly all of them) It's not going to be a good Watch unless the bosses are good, for the most part, AND the troops are good, for the most part. If your interview with the WC feels good, then go and see the Commander. But scope him out too and be careful. Too many these days are not and never were "The Cops". If the WC is good & the Commmander isn't, then never mind him; just bid in and let the WC pull you onto his Watch.
When you get there, start fresh.
Be a ball of fire with good intentions.
Make friends, not enemies; do good Police work; learn the District quickly & back up everyone on the Watch on calls. Pretty soon it'll
be your turn to buy the next round & you will once again LOVE THIS F'N
JOB! At least for a good while.
Good Luck!

To 10/27/2006 12:48:57 A.M. Twenty years ago I was in the same spot you were in. I was stuck in a lousy south side district, working for bad and racist bosses. (Yes, lil Malcom, Blacks can be racist too) I got tired of the same old domestics and dealing with unappreciative and hateful citizens. I put in a par form and went North. Try 001, 012, 018, anyplace out of the south or west sides. It was the best move I ever make on this job. I found I enjoyed the job again. I was working for good bosses, dining in good restaurants, and for the most part working in a place where the citizens liked and appreciated the police. By all means, go. Your attitude will change for the better, and you might find that you like the job again. In the mean time, do your job, stay away from the booze, and try to not burn too many bridges. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

To TIRED YOUNG GUY......
With WELL OVER 30 years and nearing the end of the line, here's my [friendly] advice.
Did you notice all of those 'serious' posts above this one?
Those are your brothers. They went through what you are now experiencing. The comments all share the same theme....just a bump in the road. Switch highways. You hit the 5 year wall. Some do it in 2, some in 10, some just plug along.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Similar to the military, WE share a common brotherhood that those that never experienced it, never will understand or appreciate.
But YOU are an integral part of it. That "‘Thin Blue Line."
Unfortunately we don't always have great days. A thirty year vet once told me,..."I never had a bad day on this job, some were just better than others!"
That's the attitude that kept ‘him' from hitting the wall. I've heard said that....."IF you don't laugh ‘everyday' on this job, you just ain't paying attention!" Whatever it takes.
You already have the advantage in that not only did you ‘recognize' this occupational experience, you had the balls to ‘seek' advice and presumably the intellect to ‘act' upon it.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Time and space does not allow me to ramble on much longer but please don't interpret that as a lack of caring.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Keep in mind all those before you that worked so hard to make this an honorable profession. You need to keep that tradition flowing for the generations that will succeed YOU. The camaraderie that you spoke of is not inherited, it is earned. Stick around and contribute to our heritage.
I don't know you and you don't know me, but I can GUARANTEE that IF we should ever meet, "I got your back." It's what we do, brother.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Good Luck

It's ashame that happened, but normal. It's up to the supervisors to handle the situation. To 7:51:47pm..you must not be very intelligent as I can see from your grammar and spelling. Imagine the CR's that would be created if a M/2 confronted a M/1 P.O. about his unprofessional appearance and behavior in class. I'm sure you are a gangster wantabe wearing blue! Remember gangster, discipline is for the supervisors not the P.O.'s, but in your gangster, cocked hat wearing world, you are the boss! Good luck in life! I can't say how happy and thankful i am for everyone's responses. I was honestly expecting some guys to respond negetively and tell me to quit whining, etc.. but not one single one. I thank you for that. For the great advice and kind words, i couldn't be more thankful. Honestly, after reading the responses i see that this is a normal thing that people go through on this job and that by making a change it can make a big difference. I know that starting new somewhere is a tough thing, but i know it's something i have to do. I need to see some "true victims" once in a while and some people that are happy to see you in the neighborhood instead of those that spit at the sight of us. I need to see that maybe just maybe once in a while i can help someone out that really appreciates it. I need to be able to dine in a place that i'm not afraid of them putting something in my food. I think it's time, even if just for a year to check it out, it's time. I appreciate the one post about staying out of the bars. I know that's a vice of mine and i'm trying to work on it. When you work afternoons it seems so easy to just stop for "one" after the shift. Every day somebody on the watch goes out and it's hard to resist. I thank also the poster that suggested more extra curricular things in my life. I began to examen that issue and realized that i really don't have much going on besides work. I work, go out once in a while, then sleep in and go back to work. Not a very healthy lifestyle and a bad rut to be in.
Anyway, i can't thank you guys enough that posted with the encouraging words and wisdom. It's very nice to know when i needed some help and advice there were many there at the drop of a dime to help out. I was eagerly awaiting coming home tonight from work to see if hopefully someone relpied with some help, but to see the many replies really overwhelmed me and made me proud to be part of the CPD. It turns out i do have "brothers" out there just waiting to help me all along. Thank you guys so much again, and goodnight and please stay safe out there.

To 11:48, my sentiments exactly. For several months I've been waiting for a positive post like this one to appear.

This job is great but it is also not our friend. It can turn it's ugly head and bite anyone of us in the ass without warning. Point is do the right thing, support each other and you will have no worries.

Hey, Tired Young Guy:
I came on in the late 60's. Way back then an old timer told me even then, "Try and transfer about every 5 years." "Change is refreshing". No bidding then, so, easier said than done. I tell the young guys I hear that want to come on the job, that if you do, to use it as a stepping stone/reference. Look to the State/Feds, for a law enforcement career. Good Luck, you'll do just fine. It seems like your head is in the right place.

Just a note to 12:48am----try to transfer districts. It's a start, and if you still feel thie same way, GET OUT while you stll can move on to something in the 'outside' world. I made it 26yrs. and probably could still be there if I followed my own advice. I only made 1 move, but it gave me the perspective to do another 9yrs. Give it a try and Good Luck to you.

I had the same experience with a couple of guys in my TARA class.
The instructors were great and it was a great class. Just as in the previous posts, we have a couple of guys who wore the ghetto outfits and looked so unprofessional. 2 of them came in 35 minutes after our lunch was over and they gave us more than enough time for lunch. It's always nice to see all the officers with the blue tooth sticking out of their ears too. One female officer answered her phone and was talking on it during the class. How rude and unprofessional and what an insult to the instructors.

Hey 12:43 and 2:44. Shut the fuck up!!!!!!
Assholes like you are the reason this department is going downhill.....fast. It used to be fun at one time.

The lad asked for advice and it was great to see how the brotherhood stepped up and gave it to him. Thank all of you who positively contributed with the comments. It actually made me proud. It was the first good group of postings I have seen on this blog in quite some time.

Your negative comments just show how narrow minded and juvenile you are!

What's the story just reported as "breaking news" on Channel 7 from Nagle & Gunnison in 016. Did an off-duty copper foil a bank robbery? Shots fired?

Details anyone?

10/27/2006 05:41:02 PM

odpo sees a dye pack expolde while mutt from out south is running from a bank. follows bad guys and while calling 911, pookie decides to throw round or rounds at odpo. flags down tac team from 16 and soon after, bad guys in custody, money and gun recovered. excellent job by guys from 16 tact...even better job by odpo. its easy to say that he should've called 911 and let the bad guys get away, but until you're in that situation, you never know. while there were no dead bad guys, once again the police emerged victorious and bad guys going to the pokey.

don't know where to put this, so here goes.

Believe me, you are not alone. This is exactly how my husband feels about the job. He still does as good of a job if not better than day one, but the motivation is gone. I can remember even three years ago when he was excited about his job. Telling the stories and all that. Now its like the job is just that-a job. It pays the bills and not really even that nowadays. With the residency rule and all the tax hikes the raises just go to inflation . We used to be able to at least save money with his raises. Not anymore. We have thought of him going to a suburban department actually. Not so he could do less, but for the morale. I am not saying other dept's dont have their dramas because I work as a dispatcher at a suburban dept but when these suburb cops get off work they look like they just got out of the spa. When my husband who is only 35 years old gets home, he looks like he is going to have a heart attack. He looks beat. It seems that when he got on 10 years ago most of his co workers were what you guys call the real police, now he has to work with rookies who seem to think they are too good for patrol and view it as just a hurdle till they get promoted. they take no pride in being in patrol it seems. So believe me, what we do is just take one day at a time. Look at the perks as opposed to the negatives. I know that can be hard but you have to do it for yourself if you decide to stay because believe me, the dept is not going to do anything to help you out .

What is a "Ghetto" outfit, and do clothes make a person a thug? I always thought it was actions that made one a thug. Doroniuk was a THUG because of his actions regardless of his clothes. Did you wear a white hood over your head to TARA class? Reading your comments you come off as RACIST!Your worried about when they returned from lunch and who was on the phone. Try this next time you fell "angry" because someone has on "ghetto" clothes tell them. Don't kiss ass in public then go home and become a keyboard tough guy. You want to know whats wrong with the job, guys like you who judge people by looks and not performance. I could give a shit if a copper picked his nose during TARA class. My concern is who responds when you need help. Then I bet Doroniuk sat in front taking notes during TARA class, great guy he won't wear "Ghetto" clothes.

To Tired Young Guy:

No one mentioned taking advantage of the biggest perk this Department offers...TUITION REIMBURSEMENT. Pick a school, a REAL school like Loyola, DePaul, UIC or Northwestern, pick a major (something other than Criminal Justice), work hard and earn you money back 100% with an "A". Skip the B.S. schools like Jerry Lewis U and Calument who have diplomas that aren't even outhouse worthy. Look toward the future and what that degree will do for you.

Get a hobby. Something that will keep you interested and out of the bars. You don't say if you're married or not, but most of us will tell you...spend too much time in the bars and the home life goes right down the tubes.

Follow the sage advice of the rest of the guys who posted before me...get a change of scenery. Finding a good place to work outweighs the long drive TO work. Laughing again will make it all worth while.

You are a normal copper. The first 5 fly by, and the next 5 crawl. Choose your friends wisely. Look for the guys who have happy homelives, who love their kids and who don't cheat on their wives. THESE are the kind of guys who know how to balance it all. Ask yourself if you surround yourself with friends who are positive or negative about everything--the job, the bosses, the community, their other half. If they complain that everyone else is the problem, the truth is, THEY are probably the problem. They are poison so avoid them like the plague.

We have a great job. Be proud to be the CPD. We've got you back, kid. Good luck.

To 10/28/2006 09:08:32 PM,

Stop making excuses for the affirmative action hires that have destroyed this job, this city, and state. I won't judge a book by it's cover but I will judge a man by his appearance. And if you dress like a west side dog you probably are one.

If I'm not mistaken Doronuik while taking out his garbage popped a few rounds off at some guys who were allegedly in the process of committing a crime in his alley and yes he was still on probation. I'm not sure if he shot anyone in that incident. But he has shot quite a few dogs in his short lived career.

Now who is to blame for this major screw up? The BOSSESS. He should have never been allowed on a tact/gang team period. For GOD sakes he was thrown out of the TRU unit with SHAMAH after about 3 periods. He was basically Schleprock from the Flintsones everything he touched turned to shit. When he came to 022 I wondered how he passed the psychological. And I'm not saying this to be funny. I'm serious. Now what do we have for the actions of two? A whole entire tact/gang team damn near under inveatigation. That's fucked up. This could've been avoided had the people in charge weeded them out early beacuse as other posters have said there were RED FLAGS from day one!!

And to the people posting about the "black male ghetto thugs" You've just proven to me that racial profiling does exist and GOD help us because this job is only going to get waorse because of you.

When are the lieutenants and commanders who send these thieves to units and teams and then supervise them going tob be held accountable? Why isn't their poor judgment and complete lack of leadership ending their careers?

If you judged by performance then you would have slammed them too.

Coming to class not dressed appropriately is an indicator of performance. Sleeping in class is also.

Appearance means alot.

A white guy coming in dressed like a thug and sleeping in class would have been thought of the same way.

Just because a M/1 was criticized does not make it RACIST.

That's the difference. White folks will criticize other whites when they are fuckups. However, ANY criticism of black folks is RACIST.

Grow up.

Not much is going to change in SOS, the Sgt's will take the heat. They caught a clout baby last week lying where he was at, while they were tracking him on GPS, I doubt if anything will happen to this clout baby. It will be new clout babies like the new Sgt. with 7 months on, who denies he is meritourous but his actions seem to point to a meritourous Sgt. by everyone that has had contact with him.

It's amazing that your clothes can be an indicator of performance. What are you supposed to wear to TARA class? I was unaware that what you wear translated into what you learn. You need to grow up and stop making excusses! Passing judgement because of clothing is some bull shit! The officers in question might be better officers than the cry baby that posted about them. When you post racist termslike those, "westside animals" "mules" "dogs" or whatever your ignorant term of the day is. You show your true colors. If those guys were weraing Armani suits there would have still been something negative to be said. If your calling the people in the street names your calling the officers in the district the same names. Reference was made to a "white guy dressed like a thug" would have been treated the same way. What about the ACTIONS of a person? Choice of words? So I guess you advocate the use of negative terms when describing people.I think that would make you closer to a thug than what you wear. Maybe now you can grow up

The five year burn-out is pretty common. Now it's time to relax and start coasting. You are confident in your ability to handle most things; you can tell right off now which jobs are bonafide and deserve your time and effort, and which are B*LL and can been blown off pretty quickly. If you have a good steady partner, stick with it. That's the hardest thing to get on this job. Be more efficient in the radio assignments and spend more time hunting, doing street and vehicle stops, developing informants or information. Even beat cars can write warrants. Take some promotional exams. Who knows, by the time you really get burned out, one may pop for you. If you're not happy in partners, move to another district. It's a great way to meet people and learn about this (still) great city. If you are still miserable, start looking for another job or some hobbies, or you'll turn into one of the whiny cry babies you read here all day. Good luck to you. There are more of you than the do-nothings. And the advice about the beer is good, too. Cheers!
