Officer Down - Indiana
- A police officer was killed and another wounded early Tuesday in a shootout with a gunman near a motel, authorities said.
The officers were investigating a report of gunshots near the Wooden Indian Motel at 1:37 a.m., Police Chief Tom Fautz said.
The gunman shot at the officers when they tried to apprehend him.
The officers returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman, Fautz said.
Cpl. Nick Polizzotto, 34, a nine-year veteran of the force, also died in the shooting, Fautz said.

SOUTH BEND — The funeral for South Bend police Cpl. Nick Polizzotto will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Joyce Center on the University of Notre Dame campus.
Polizzotto was shot and killed early Tuesday morning while responding to a shots-fired call at the Wooden Indian Motel on Lincoln Way East.
Visitation, also at the Joyce Center, will be 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Burial arrangements are still pending.
