Another Shooting
- Chicago police fatally shot a man Thursday after he charged at them with a lead pipe and a meat cleaver in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said.
A woman called 911 after seeing the unidentified man, thought to be in his late 20s, pouring lighter fluid on himself in an alley in the 4500 block of South Wood Street about 4:45 p.m, police said.
Two Deering District officers responded, saw the man wielding the pipe and the cleaver and told him to drop the weapons, said Deputy Chief Michael Shields. The officers hit the man with chemical spray, but he lunged at the officers with the weapons, causing both to shoot him, Shields said.
- JOLIET -- A man who allegedly stabbed a Joliet police officer with a knife was shot and killed by another officer Wednesday morning, and the dead man may be linked to a knife attack on another man earlier in the day.
About 10:07 a.m. Thursday, a Joliet police officer was flagged down by a man carrying a baby who said a man had tried to stab him in the second floor hallway of an apartment building at 202 E. Cass St., according to a release from police. The officer requested back-up units and upon arrival of two other officers, the man pointed out the offender to the police.
When officers approached the suspect in the hallway, he refused officers' commands to show his hands, the release said, then he suddenly lunged at the first officer, stabbing him in the stomach and chest.
When the job's done, make sure you go home alive.

Attorney calls beating 'hate crime disguised as police work'
June 14, 2007 - A man is suing two Chicago Police officers and the city saying the officers beat him because he is gay.
Lawyers for Alexander Ruppert say pictures show the injuries he suffered in the beating. It happened in March 2006 near the Uptown Lounge at Broadway and Lawrence. Ruppert's lawyers say officers were on duty and responding to a call at the bar. They reportedly asked Ruppert to step outside then took him a block away and beat him.
Ruppert says during the attack officers used anti-gay slurs and only stopped when he told them he is HIV positive.
"This was a hate crime disguised as police work. Hate crime is particularly heinous, because it's not just a crime against a person, but against an entire community," said Jon Erickson, attorney.
Ruppert was charged with aggravated battery against a police officer. Police say the charges were reduced to a misdemeanor.
The city law department says it has not yet seen the lawsuit.
I didn't see the news but let me guess how the interview with citizens on the scene went: "the pol-eese just jumped out of the car and shots the man for no reason!"

82 police recruits took their oaths Thursday morning during a graduation ceremony at Navy Pier.
Mayor Daley joined Chicago Police Superintendent Phil Cline as they welcomed the new officers. Mayor Daley told the recruits that they have a great responsibility but to use common sense when they're out on the streets. Cline reminded them to respect their badge.
The new officers will be assigned to various districts throughout the City of Chicago.

You CAN'T be the police--and why worry about your neighborhood as you must be watching out your windows (front and back) 24/7. If you were the real police you would KNOW that a police car could drive by 6 times a day and the odds of you happening to see it drive by would be miniscule. The car would be visible maybe what 15 to 30 seconds. A Supt made those same claims 20+ years ago-- no cars drive by his house in 016. So the coppers lit up his house and blew the siren everytime they went by. All the bosses got dumped, guess he REALLY didn't want to know how often they did drive by. Give 004 your address, go to all the rolls calls and bitch, you might get the same treatment. The police are there, BUT if you WERE REALLY the police you would also realize that the "bad" guys would see the police coming and step out of sight until they were gone. You could always hire private security to sit in front of your house, but no need really as I forgot you sit in the window 24/7.

Morgan's girlfriend, Sandra Thomas, said Morgan was depressed and suicidal and wanted police to shoot him. She said she had called police for help with getting him to a hospital after he poured lighter fluid on his body and tried to light himself on fire.
"He wanted them to shoot him," said Thomas, who said Morgan had made cuts on his arms on Wednesday. "I didn't want them to shoot him. I needed them to help me get him to the hospital."

There is not a lot they can do when they are not able to actively patrol their beats because they are handling calls on the north side. The calls for service have been going up fast and manpower is steadily going down, and that, is a recipe for disaster. And yes, you can suppress crime by making traffic stops. You can get guns, drugs, and warrants by doing them which means locking up the criminal element while also making a visible presence. Whats your big plan for success? Put in a bid next period and go over there and show them how its done Mr. "working police" who doesnt even know the value of doing traffic stops. All the other stuff that you say is also "the problem" is the fault of the upper management (sheets, missions, staffing). But, I have yet to see a cmdr or a lt with the power to hire more police. Address what the real problem is, MANPOWER.

Say what you want about MT post 5:38pm, but there is no denying that he is the MOST intense officer in 009. As far as MT goes, the grass won't be green until he becomes SOS. There will never be another like him in 009 again.

Marty, you have always had a passion for 009. You were fucking a bit too loyal at times. I've never met anybody who took as much shit as you did and who stayed friendly like you?! Whenever somebody from 009 would get attacked on this blog, right or wrong, you spoke up for them. You didn't care who read what you had to say. You didn't worry about the backlash. You even signed your name. (Never let the white shirts know who you are on these things.) That's what I'll always remember about you. You got character. You're a fighter. Envious people can say what they want to hurt you, but losing you to SOS really does make an impact. Believe me, the workers are going to miss the hell out of you. What I said was not a reflection on MT as much as it is a reflection on officers who swear that they have the worst gig around. Why anyone would want to go to S.O.S. at this time is a mystery to me.
I don't know MT, but I think if you want to go to that unit at this time, you are suffering from the "Grass is Greener Syndrome."
No doubt about it. He might be a great guy but as the saying goes, the grass isn't always greener.
I don't know the guy, but either way, I wish him luck.
Talking about the grass being greener does not make me an asshole. I said nothing negative about the guy other than he suffers from that because that Unit is not the place to go right now. You are treated more like an adult on a beat car than you are there. Trust me, he will see!
