Guess What Time It Is?

Time to start calculating that retro check!

Seriously though. Every single City union contract expired at midnight on 30 June. CTA, CPD, CPS, Fire, various trade unions, all of them - somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty or more labor agreements.

We can only assume this is some sort of ploy by the City. Here's how we see it - everything expires at once, the City makes one blanket offer to one of the lesser unions and then uses that as a negotiating point (Well, this is what the pipe fitters settled for, so that's all you're going to get.)

This is exactly why a "me too" clause is sometimes a bad thing to have. As soon as a weak negotiator steps up, they drag everyone else down with them. If the FOP plays this the way they ought to, they'll disregard what anyone else settles for and only negotiate what has been granted in the past. It'll all end up in front of an arbitrator anyway since the City is under no pressure to negotiate - we cannot strike. That'll mean a 4% annual raise over the life of the contract and increases in health care costs. Figure 18 months minimum.

Just think of how much money the city makes on the interest from retro...
And where does it go?

As far as raises go, they always cry broke to the general public (which started about a month ago)and then the outcry will be they get too much already.

And for the record, I am not a copper, but a city worker, and they can never pay you ladies and gents enough for what you do, put up with and have to go through to make 8hrs pay!!

We have about 10,000 memebers. The mayor and city counsel should feel are numbers. Send letters, emails, singing telegrams or do whatever possible to make the elected officials think of nothing other than our contract. Stop by your aldeerman's office and find out exactly what he or she is doing about our contract. I've only been to one union meeting in the past seven years, but I do undertand that the F.O.P. is only as strong as we make it. We each must take it upon ourselves to make this such a headache for da mayor and his aldermen that they are motivated to settle. There is a reason some groups in the city always seem to be taken care of, because they speak with one voice. The biggest reason no one listens to us is our failure to act together. Too few members vote on our own contract for any politicians to be frightened of what we might do in an election. If nothing else, we can give back some of the headaches weve've been dealing with for years.

Can't we hire some sharp lawyer to show that since we have not had a contract in place at the expiration of a contract, that the city is negotiating in BAD FAITH. That one of the reasons that this bad faith takes place is for the city to earn interest on our future pay increases. If we are able to demonstrate that, perhaps a court would order interest be paid on our money since they held it for an extra 18-36 months.
It seems reasonable. Can this be done?

The union needs to prepare to picket at major events and anytime the olimpic commitee comes to town. Our contracts have ben giving up benifits and getting less and less. Meritless promotions need to be reduced and criteria needs to be put in to show how merit picks are made.

Screw the "me too" clause. I want what the city council voted themselves last year. In addition to % raises, they also included language that gives them a COLA (cost-of-living-adjustment.) That at least preserves purchasing power, when everything goes up in cost (inflation) such as gas prices, health insurance premiums, food, etc.

Last year, I was very critical on this blog about it. If it's good enough for them, how come not us?!

Do we have to vote for the new contract?

Or is it just passed by the FOP if they think it is the best deal for us?

Would it be wise to vote the contract down, if we do get to vote on it, just to show our displeasure with the way things are, the way things went into getting the current contract, and to make a statement about future contracts??

I am starting to get close to having to cut coupons in order to make it in the city. I have three kids, a spouse that works, and it seems our (CPD)raise does not equal the rising costs of everything else in the city, especially the health insurance.

Can someone enlighten me please??

Thanks.

And you had better wake up and realize that bitching about us not having a contract isn't going to get you one faster. This is my 4 contract and it never changes, the city cries poor, the FOP makes a big stink at the beginning then shuts up, it finally goes to arbitration, we get something and lose something plus one or two in return, then we get a retro check. My only advice to everyone is, check the money box from now until the the contract is signed.

i am a sergeant on this job and I would love to see our unions come together and solicit independent offers from different health insurance companies...let's see...the city has let's say...30,000 employees...and you go to Afflac, BCBS, etc.. and say we have 30,000 employees put together a benifit package for us this is what we want...what can you offer us...You're telling me that we can't do/get better than what we are getting or will get?? I find it hard to believe. My own mother is an administrator / nurse for a large health insurance company located in Wisconsin and she begs to differ on the city's position on health insurance costs...we can get a better deal...we just don't have the organization(s) to take the effort to explore the diffent possibilities out there. The city is making BIG $$ on a contract with BCBS...and money NEVER actually changes hands..just paper. I would also like to see us get at least 4%/year...for 4 years nothing less...with the rising taxes, education costs etc...we deserve it and need it to stay above water with the day to day expenses that we struggle with to live in a decent neighborhood or send our childern to good schools etc. I do like the $3,000 stipend for education idea....but would rather fight like hell for the seemingly impossible resdiency regulation to be lifted. I think that our unions should look seriously at alternate insurance carriers and solicit bids from them for someone should be able to give us a great deal with 30,000 + employees...wouldn't you think?? The last contract was "decent" but why should we give up anything to get what we deserve? the real problem is we don't come together as one...and we continue to get screwed because there are those who just want their retro check...You'll get your retro check....just be patient and think beyond the retro check that is yours to begin with...they aren't doing you any favors by giving it to you...you worked for it...lets be heard as one voice and get what we deserve...The Mayor has spent our money for years on his crooked croine freinds and has neglected us and other city employees while he lines his pockets and his croines pockets with gold from our blood, sweat and tears...we are the ones that make him look good...he doesn't make us look good...we are the ones who risk our lives every day in those streets...he does not! We are the ones whose families suffer when we work terrible hours and can't be at family functions ...not Mr Daley...we are the ones helping his voters...not him! we deserve what we want because it's us that got him his job...not him! remember Mr Daley...we are the ones who got you elected through out hard work and dedication...to make this city a better place to live...not you....don't forget that...and stop fucking us.

Contract negotiations with the Fire Union, WTF? Personally, the "me too" concept in wages for Police and Fire is a farce. In the construction trades the laborer (Fire) is paid at a rate considerably lower than the Finish Carpenter - Master Electricain - Plumber (Police). FOP stop the "me too" shit with Fire and get us what we deserve.
