Guess What Time It Is?
Time to start calculating that retro check!
Seriously though. Every single City union contract expired at midnight on 30 June. CTA, CPD, CPS, Fire, various trade unions, all of them - somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty or more labor agreements.
We can only assume this is some sort of ploy by the City. Here's how we see it - everything expires at once, the City makes one blanket offer to one of the lesser unions and then uses that as a negotiating point (Well, this is what the pipe fitters settled for, so that's all you're going to get.)
This is exactly why a "me too" clause is sometimes a bad thing to have. As soon as a weak negotiator steps up, they drag everyone else down with them. If the FOP plays this the way they ought to, they'll disregard what anyone else settles for and only negotiate what has been granted in the past. It'll all end up in front of an arbitrator anyway since the City is under no pressure to negotiate - we cannot strike. That'll mean a 4% annual raise over the life of the contract and increases in health care costs. Figure 18 months minimum.

Just think of how much money the city makes on the interest from retro...
And where does it go?
So go out there and make arrests. Bring in those parkers and movers because we are so appreciated.
No raise...no work.
CTA was just offered 16% over 5 years. 3%,3%,3%,3.5%,3.5% so this is pretty much what they are going to offer us. Damn shame it is going to take 3 years to get the details down.
It is not unreal to expect a rise in health care costs, just look at the national health care crisis and you know it is going to happen. What we don't want to happen is the cost to rise so great that it eats up our paychecks. As far as raises go, they always cry broke to the general public (which started about a month ago)and then the outcry will be they get too much already.
And for the record, I am not a copper, but a city worker, and they can never pay you ladies and gents enough for what you do, put up with and have to go through to make 8hrs pay!!
God Bless!
We have about 10,000 memebers. The mayor and city counsel should feel are numbers. Send letters, emails, singing telegrams or do whatever possible to make the elected officials think of nothing other than our contract. Stop by your aldeerman's office and find out exactly what he or she is doing about our contract. I've only been to one union meeting in the past seven years, but I do undertand that the F.O.P. is only as strong as we make it. We each must take it upon ourselves to make this such a headache for da mayor and his aldermen that they are motivated to settle. There is a reason some groups in the city always seem to be taken care of, because they speak with one voice. The biggest reason no one listens to us is our failure to act together. Too few members vote on our own contract for any politicians to be frightened of what we might do in an election. If nothing else, we can give back some of the headaches weve've been dealing with for years.
Can't we hire some sharp lawyer to show that since we have not had a contract in place at the expiration of a contract, that the city is negotiating in BAD FAITH. That one of the reasons that this bad faith takes place is for the city to earn interest on our future pay increases. If we are able to demonstrate that, perhaps a court would order interest be paid on our money since they held it for an extra 18-36 months.
It seems reasonable. Can this be done?
We are getting whatever the CTA is getting in terms or $$ plain and simple...We might be able to get 15%/4 years...we are historically not getting anything more than other city unions...and the above poster forgot to mention the CTA got stroked real bad for more $$ into the medical too!! get ready to bend over ....again..

BUT LETS NOT FORGET THEY ALSO HAD A HUGE INCREASE IN HEALTHCARE AND PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS! THAT EATS THE RAISE AWAY AND MAY EVEN TAKE SOME OF THEIR CURRENT SALARY! THE FOP WILL JUST LAY DOWN LIKE IT ALWAYS DOES AND LET THE CITY STEAMROLL A CONTRACT RIGHT THROUGH! "NO PAY NO WORK"! GREAT CONCEPT BUT IT WILL NEVER WORK! TAKE IT FROM AN OLD TIMER BOYS AND GIRLS WHEN THERE WAS A TICKET SLOWDOWN THE SUCKASSES JUST WROTE MORE TICKETS! WE UNLIKE OTHER POLICE DEPTS NEVER STICK TOGETHER! JUST LIKE DALEY THROWS ALL HIS PEOPLE UNDER THE BUS WE LEARN FROM THE TOP! SHIT ROLLS DOWNHILL!
You didn't expect to get rich on this job did you? Your just a civil servant. Low on the skills list.
the INTREST windfall is unregulated money and can go anywhere.
we will be TAXED at a higher rate on our retro checks.
sounds like the winner here is the city and state GOVERNMENT.
A 3% RAISE.....TAKE IT AND RUN ?
let's review: housing up 100%, gasoline up 100%, education costs up sharply, food going higher and our standard of living is dropping like a rock !
can't claim poor this contract, remember the sale of chicago skyway!!!!! I do..... pay up Dick
I would take the CTA's offer and run with it!!!!!
Nothing less than 4-4.5% a year 3% is losing money.City taxes are through the roof.Gas keeps going up electric rates are going up. The union needs to prepare to picket at major events and anytime the olimpic commitee comes to town. Our contracts have ben giving up benifits and getting less and less. Meritless promotions need to be reduced and criteria needs to be put in to show how merit picks are made.
when they pay retro it is never correct! went to FLOP and asked they told me last time "lucky you got anything" great fraternal organization like the boy scouts like it has been said before the fop vs boyscouts= the boy scouts have LEADERS!
everyone take a sick day, hell with getting your nam ribbon.
If all the unions negotiated together, it would be from a postion of strength. If we negotiate seperately then that is what will occur.
It is my hope that the FOP and the other unions get together and put up a united front when negotiating with the city. I know the county does this.
No contract for HOW LONG THIS TIME? Old CPD proverb: What goes around comes around.
We risk our lives on a daily basis and end up getting the same as a bus driver or garbageman does. Go Patrick Fitzgerald, please cut out the cancer of corrupt politics in our city, county, and state, once and for all, by cutting off the head of the serpent.
Screw the "me too" clause. I want what the city council voted themselves last year. In addition to % raises, they also included language that gives them a COLA (cost-of-living-adjustment.) That at least preserves purchasing power, when everything goes up in cost (inflation) such as gas prices, health insurance premiums, food, etc.
Last year, I was very critical on this blog about it. If it's good enough for them, how come not us?!
SEE WHAT THE CTA GOT. INSURANCE ATE THE RAISE. NEW EMPLOYEE GET LESS BENEFITS THE OLD EMPLOYEES ALWAY SELL OUT FUTURE EMPLOYEES.
WAIT AND SEE WE ARE A VERY GREEDY BUNCH. SCREW THE NEW GUYS EG. 18 MONTH PROBATION.
Do we have to vote for the new contract?
Or is it just passed by the FOP if they think it is the best deal for us?
Would it be wise to vote the contract down, if we do get to vote on it, just to show our displeasure with the way things are, the way things went into getting the current contract, and to make a statement about future contracts??
I am starting to get close to having to cut coupons in order to make it in the city. I have three kids, a spouse that works, and it seems our (CPD)raise does not equal the rising costs of everything else in the city, especially the health insurance.
Can someone enlighten me please??
Thanks.
A little bird told me the city is trying to talk the trade unions into a 10 year deal. I know it sounds unreal, but 10 years would put any job action past his precious Olympics.
Hard to believe, but then again this is the City of Chicago.
Exactly right, we need to get on the same page with all the other unions and squeeze some balls. Police officers, especially young ones, STOP WRITTING TICKETS FOR A WHILE ! Lets see how it affects their way of thinking. Without that income they will talk turkey with us.
"Go Patrick Fitzgerald, please cut out the cancer of corrupt politics in our city, county, and state, once and for all, by cutting off the head of the serpent."
The ONLY high ranking government offical present @ this years St.Judes March. Stand up Guy, more than can be said for the best pol Money can buy Herr Mayor Runt

It's called STAGFLATION. Remember that word from the 70's?
today is the second day of my one and a half percent cost of living raise. retro of course.. when will the city cut the checks?
Tell me if I am wrong? The CTA is not a city contract. You can't give a ticket for damage to city property when someone strikes a bus can you?
The CTA is a financial crisis! The city of Chicago will have to prove the same. However I feel the FOP will screw us again and fall in line with the contract of the CTA.
CTA was just offered 16% over 5 years. 3%,3%,3%,3.5%,3.5% so this is pretty much what they are going to offer us. Damn shame it is going to take 3 years to get the details down
....................
DUH CTA is a privite company its "state supported" but no a city entity
Lets see
Residancy
Pay
Retirement
Heath Care
Residency bad issue because most of us already live in city and would see large depreciation if this was to change
Retirement only small percentage is near that
Health Care yes lets not give them one more inch.
Pay, YES THIS IS WHAT WE WANT. Its here its now we can buy all the rest with it
67 posts about a jaggoff boss in 016, 88 posts regarding an award ribbon and a mere 28 posts about a subject that can only be described as vital to all of us. what conclusion do you think the people from city hall draw when they read this blog? WE HAD BETTER WAKE UP AND STAND TOGETHER ON THIS ISSUE OR WE WILL BE EATEN ALIVE !
Time for more coffee and donuts! Going to just sit under the big tree and read my new book! answer calls as slow as I can don't want to disrupt the public and illegals daley brought in to this city! no tickets that just upsets people! "SERENITY NOW"!
What percent raise did million dollar daley and his mafia aldercreatures get this year? Now its out that that little sawed of fuck and his wife take all their vactions on the city. Must be nice! When is the last time that fuck had to buy a gallon of gas? Oh, thats right, he never had to.
What happened to the agreement that the Fire Union boss had with the FOP and PBPA some years ago? If I remember right that was a touch of fresh ideas about getting together.
I agree with the above poster, judging by the content and the number of comments on the contract issue, We Are in Trouble.
Now is the time to initiate action, start packing the FOP Hall at every meeting until there is a viable contract, flood the office with hundreds of phone calls daily voicing concern and demanding action, demand informational picketing and a "Mass Media Campaign" featuring ads in the Chicago newspapers illustrating our plight.
Residency bad issue because most of us already live in city and would see large depreciation if this was to change
Just who are you going to sell to when you price your house to sell too high that YOU couldn't even buy it back from yourself!?
At least in the early 1970's there were traffic slowdowns amd blitz's called by the Confederation of Police (COP). The police officers of earlier generations had some backbone. They just did not write on the bathroom walls. Do something that is orgainized, instead of what I read here.
I just hope that no matter what occurs that the PO's hold the FOP leadership accountable. The election is coming up and new blood is always good.
Make your concerns known and hold their feet to the fire.
The CTA has absolutely nothing to do with the City of Chicago, they are not Chicago employees.
The CTA is a hybird organization that is multi-governmentally funded but esentially private.
What is the actual cost of living in Chicago? Where is Diligaff?
Is the FOP bringing the CPD pension crisis into contract negotiations? Last I heard the pension was only 52% FUNDED, at this rate is will be bankrupt in the not to distant future.
Silver spoon in his mouth dicky daley. Daddys little boy never had to reach in his pocket anything except his little dick! When will the feds catch up with him?

And you had better wake up and realize that bitching about us not having a contract isn't going to get you one faster. This is my 4 contract and it never changes, the city cries poor, the FOP makes a big stink at the beginning then shuts up, it finally goes to arbitration, we get something and lose something plus one or two in return, then we get a retro check. My only advice to everyone is, check the money box from now until the the contract is signed.
We have no Union, just another clout unit, don't be fooled. As long as coppers get their fop stickers, fop book and retro checks they are happy, meanwhile they are getting screwed and don't even know it.
This so-called fop is always silent on major issues because they are busy making deals with city hall to sell us out and get taken care of after they retire.
Speaking of cameras, they should have cameras installed in the fop contract negotiations room. This way we can watch ourselves get screwed.

10:52, you sir are an idiot. There are many here because this job, believe it or not, is better than many in the private sector. This job should not be low on the skills list, however, the city is trying to make it so. The real professionals on this job can write well, articulate and communicate in court, know the laws and be able to apply them. Maybe your just a F-up. If the city can spend billions to build the "Bean" they can throw some our way to ensure it doesn't burn or get stolen.

and all you did was waste more space.. fucnutz
Don't give up anything on healthcare. Don't take a few bucks now for what will cost us lots later.
Find out what plans the Mayor and Aldermen get verses what we get.
Since the city is self insured, even if they have the same plans, I would bet there is a big difference on what is paid and not paid.

I agree with 11:31am, we need to stick together and have a ticket slow down or a ticket halt. Young people put your pride aside for a few months and stop so we all can benefit. You have your whole career to write tickets. Once you see the power it has, you will always have the experience to use it during contract talk. The suburbs are passing us by, the time is now to even up the score.

Heath care crisis thanks in part to giving millions upon millions of illegals free health care and other free benefits that we pay for!
i am a sergeant on this job and I would love to see our unions come together and solicit independent offers from different health insurance companies...let's see...the city has let's say...30,000 employees...and you go to Afflac, BCBS, etc.. and say we have 30,000 employees put together a benifit package for us this is what we want...what can you offer us...You're telling me that we can't do/get better than what we are getting or will get?? I find it hard to believe. My own mother is an administrator / nurse for a large health insurance company located in Wisconsin and she begs to differ on the city's position on health insurance costs...we can get a better deal...we just don't have the organization(s) to take the effort to explore the diffent possibilities out there. The city is making BIG $$ on a contract with BCBS...and money NEVER actually changes hands..just paper. I would also like to see us get at least 4%/year...for 4 years nothing less...with the rising taxes, education costs etc...we deserve it and need it to stay above water with the day to day expenses that we struggle with to live in a decent neighborhood or send our childern to good schools etc. I do like the $3,000 stipend for education idea....but would rather fight like hell for the seemingly impossible resdiency regulation to be lifted. I think that our unions should look seriously at alternate insurance carriers and solicit bids from them for someone should be able to give us a great deal with 30,000 + employees...wouldn't you think?? The last contract was "decent" but why should we give up anything to get what we deserve? the real problem is we don't come together as one...and we continue to get screwed because there are those who just want their retro check...You'll get your retro check....just be patient and think beyond the retro check that is yours to begin with...they aren't doing you any favors by giving it to you...you worked for it...lets be heard as one voice and get what we deserve...The Mayor has spent our money for years on his crooked croine freinds and has neglected us and other city employees while he lines his pockets and his croines pockets with gold from our blood, sweat and tears...we are the ones that make him look good...he doesn't make us look good...we are the ones who risk our lives every day in those streets...he does not! We are the ones whose families suffer when we work terrible hours and can't be at family functions ...not Mr Daley...we are the ones helping his voters...not him! we deserve what we want because it's us that got him his job...not him! remember Mr Daley...we are the ones who got you elected through out hard work and dedication...to make this city a better place to live...not you....don't forget that...and stop fucking us.
We used to have top notch health insurance, good plans and the city paid for them before the first contract and after as part of our compensation package.
Then FOP and the city dangled a
$500 bonus for signing a contract that said we would pay $2 a paycheck for health insurance. Like fools, many coppers went for that and now look at what crap we have. I really do wonder what the politicans get, now and in retirement.
Us older cops stuck togther. Todays cops are all pulling in different directions. It's not that you don't obey an order it's how you interpert that

So True. In the days of the real police, us vet' were glue. Today, you get more copper' getting c.r. number on other copper'.
In the entire city , there are very few district' were you see copper's bonding like back when.
From what I see and hear 009 and 010 copper' stick together. They run in packs. These young copper' make us old timers proud
I'll take the 3 percent raise for the 6 days on 3 days off work schedule and working day furloughs.
maybe they should pay them more!

start burning your time-next contract only will allow 100 hours on books.no more city buying back time-burn,burn,burn.if you dont use it-you will lose it!!!!!YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST.
Contract negotiations with the Fire Union, WTF? Personally, the "me too" concept in wages for Police and Fire is a farce. In the construction trades the laborer (Fire) is paid at a rate considerably lower than the Finish Carpenter - Master Electricain - Plumber (Police). FOP stop the "me too" shit with Fire and get us what we deserve.
