This Judge Ackley needs to be removed from the bench, along with NIFONG ASA. I truly believe that this must go national. I have been e-mailing everyone on Mette's behalf.

Please make your fellow brothers/sisters rise to the occassion of the defense of innocence. I still can't believe this poor Officer Mette could go to jail for 5 long hard years.

Hey SCC, I believe that he got the short end of the stick. But what about the children of P.o. Rawa and Smith? I cant believe that you are putting up a thread for a convicted felon before you even mention their deaths. Much less before these young guys are in the ground! Lets get our priorities straight.

Was watching channel 7 news and they did a little story on it. I was glad that at least the FOP finally spoke up and said something for once. I've been on the dep't for a long long time and i can't remember a more mute FOP than the one we have now. I'm sure that they do a ton of work that we don't even realize, but we also need a front man to come out and speak up for us. Please, get out there and do interviews, do some public relations, anything. They really should create a position soley for p.r. This is sorely needed and would be good for morale to hear good things about us once in a while.
I hope this doesn't come off as me bashing the fop, b/c that's not my intention. Sometimes it takes somebody to point out what you're doing wrong/right and give some advice as an outsider looking in for necessary change to take place.

First off, the Mette Family greatly appreciates everyone’s efforts. They do, however, feel a protest would be more effective during the actual appeal process. I will continue to work on that.

I would like to thank the poster who offered to hook us up with Cellular Field. We will need that in the future.

A thank you to the State Police also.

On August 1st, we will all be receiving a uniform allowance. And although times are tough and gasoline prices are killing us, please find your way to donate a little of that to the defense fund. I am going to donate $100.00 a paycheck until this decision is overturned. Remember, the Duke/Lacrosse players spent more than a million dollars and they were only charged, not convicted. This family is going to incur a tremendous amount of expense.

The family also needs this story to be told nationally. Bill O’Reilly would be our best bet for that. We must continue the e-mails to him.

You are all making me feel very proud to be a Chicago Police Officer.

Thank You.

There are already organizations in place and officers willing to step up to make arrangements for all the various fundraising that will undoubtedly take place for the children of Officers Smith and Rawa.

Mette was getting ZERO help. Not only that, he was railroaded into a jail term according to all the available evidence and the judge's own words. He's been abandoned by the Department and until recently, ignored by his Fraternal Organization.

We are of the opinion that Mette could do without your half assed support calling him a convicted felon and trying to take us to task for trying to bring a little bit of light to this deplorable situation.

I've known K. Skipper a number of years now. I have never worked with her on the real job, but I have done side gigs and Special Employment with her. I have never known her to be a micro-manager, nitwit, and she is certainly not an "old lady". Maybe this opinion comes from some 023 gang guy who doesn't like to have to work in the ghetto a lot (waaaah--detailed out to 015 again) and prefers to say in 023 to check out the women (or in 023 it could easily be the men).

Thanks to the superb column by the Tribune's John Kass, the people of Dubuque County will now learn of the outrage which occurred in the courtroom of Judge Monica Ackley.

One of our regular posters tipped the uninformed editor of the Dubuque Telegraph Herald yesterday.

Now, for the first time, news of the "felony conviction" appears in today's newspaper.

To the moron who posted someone must not like Sgt Skipper because they don't like going to work in 015: A sergeant has no input whatsoever where the gang units will be assigned. Duh! She is not liked because she treats her officers like children and must surround her self with completely inept officers who are dumb enough to listen to her. If anyone doesn't like going to the ghetto its her. Check her resume (020 district, Marine Unit)

I have no doubt that you mean well.

However, can we refrain from insulting the three million citizens of the "hick state" of Iowa? Fair and decent Iowans may drop in to visit this blog. You are not helping us in making allies.

Also, in a previous thread, there are one or two trolls with a devious agenda plus one sanctimonious prick out there that nitpicks on Mette about coulda, woulda, shoulda hypotheticals. One claimed to be a Mette supporter. However, a one-word Freudian slip at the end of the post suggests this poster is actually attempting to sabotage Mette's defense.

Remember "snonymous", unless you actually identify yourself on this site, you could easily be "Judge Kangaroo", "Nifong" or "Jake the Snake" trying to pull a fast one on us.

to 7/17 2:23 am are you on crack ? yes, i have a family and would want help from my friends and police family in the event of my untimely demise. yes, i will give generously when the benefit parties come up. but, to forsake a seemingly great guy (never met him, but have heard nothing but good things), because of two tragic and untimely deaths is assanine. all of the families involved are in great need or our police family's assistance. i'm quite sure that this guy mette feels terrible for the families of the two lost officers, but, i'll bet he is quite concerned for his own immediate future, as a quack liberal judge sentenced him to 5 years in prison for something that in most occurences never even get a case report generated for. i'm sure there will be immediate short term help from "our" family for both of these officer's families and long term help in the form of a few benefit parties. but, please don't make light of mette's situation as it could turn out very badly. i would be shitting cinder blocks if i was in his shoes and he is keeping very cool in the face of this mess. these are two completely different situations. you can NEVER undo the loss that these families have encountered, but, mette is in an extreme jam himself. and, as for being a convicted felon ??? wrongfully accused and convicted of at best, a misdemeanor. who's side are you on ???

Ok, I have to say something here. First of all this post is for Mette! Help out or don't. Secondly, i've worked for Skipper before and still chat with her once in awhile and ANYONE in that tact office will tell you that she is probably the ONLY supervisor there to give guys a break on anything and on top of that you don't have to go out drinking with her in order to get it. Some of the sgts there are 8 for 8 company men and would turn you in at the drop of a dime. Now i'm not saying she's the only good sgt there (Brannigod is pretty cool too) but at least she is SOBER enough to do her job which is more than i can say for some of the supervisors there. Just for the record - the watch knows who some of you are and there is a reason alot of you are despised. You work on a tac team in one of the quietest districts in the city and you STILL act as if you are saving the world. Beating people while they're cuffed and breaking your hand doesn't make you tough. Neither does stealing from someones desk! Not a man among you. If you have a problem with her then tell her. I know that is a strange concept but try it. You may learn a thing or two.

I will be sending a check for a couple hundred monday. Tell everyone at roll call about the defense fund. Sone P.O.'s I know were not aware of this situation as of yesterday. By the way, everyone here needs to start writing letters to Iowa gov't officials. Here is part of the letter I sent to the Iowa governor. On the twenty-first day of December, 2006, in Dubuque County Iowa, a great injustice occurred. Michael Mette, an assault victim, was convicted of "assault with serious injury in violation of Iowa Code 708.1 and 708.18" while defending himself in front of his brother's apartment. Originally, a verbal altercation occurred at the residence of Jake Gothard. As Jake began making "ignorant and offensive statements to the group [Mr. Mette and friend]," Mr. Mette and the group with him left Mr. Gothard's residence. The judge acknowledged that Mr. Mette did the right thing by leaving as he was being verbally abused by Mr. Gothard. As Mr. Mette and his brother were approaching the door to his brother's apartment, Mr. Gothard and his 6 foot 8 inch friend Nick "came running at them..." Nick stated he was "going to beat the shit out of them." Mr. Gothard then got into the face of Mr. Mette and pushed him two or three times with closed fists in the chest. Mr. Mette backed up and was again approached by Mr. Gothard at which time Mr. Mette, in reasonable fear of receiving another assault, punched Mr. Gothard in the face causing him to fall to the ground. The judge ruled that Mr. Mette was not the initial aggressor and it was reasonable to believe that harm might come to him. However, she states that he failed to retreat from the aggressor, Mr. Gothard. Had Mr. Mette simply turned around to retreat to the apartment, he was much more likely to be assaulted again than if he stood his ground. He would have had to turn his back to Mr. Gothard thus being vulnerable to an attack from behind. Was he supposed to expose himself to the high probability of an attack from behind, which would be impossible to defend against? The Iowa law cited in this case allows "the use of reasonable force when the person reasonably believes such force is necessary to defend oneself from imminent use of unlawful force." However a person is required to avoid confrontation by seeking and using alternative course of action, "UNLESS DOING SO ENTAILS A RISK TO LIFE OR SAFETY." It is clear that Mr. Mette would have been risking his safety had he turned around and retreated from a big, angry aggressor that had just assaulted him. A push from behind could have caused severe injury. The judge did not provide details as to how Mr. Mette should have avoided conflict. Is a victim expected to use a cell phone (assuming they have one) to call for police while they are being assaulted then wait an unknown amount of time for a response? Maybe he should have turned his back to Mr. Gothard and risk a blow to the back of the head. Or walk backwards and trip on some object lying on the ground. Should he have tried to run and risk injury by tripping and falling because it was dark and difficult to see where he was placing his feet? Or, more likely, is chased by a large, angry aggressor who would become more "pumped up" after chasing him.
Furthermore, Mr. Gothard, who was not charged with a crime, was obviously guilty of at least two: assault and public intoxication. The simple fact that one is a crime victim does not provide a defense for actions taken by him prior to his becoming a victim. The judge in this case found that Mr. Gothard was the initial aggressor. Why was he not charged? Two other men at the scene were charged with public intoxication. Why was Mr. Gothard not? His BAC was found to be .270, obviously intoxicated. Another important point is that Mr. Gothard was under 21, the legal drinking age in Iowa, at the time, another violation of law by Mr. Gothard for which he was not charged. Another point, although not clear from the judges finding of fact, is whether or not Mr. Gothard was on private property when he assaulted Mr. Mette. Mr. Gothard may have been trespassing and was not charged (speculation as it is not clear from the findings of fact exactly where the assault on Mr. Mette occurred.) Apparently Jake Gothard's father Curt is a boss for a big Iowa trucking company and attended the proceedings regularly unlike his son. While I am not a conspiracy theorist, it appears that Curt Gothard's status and position in the community may have contributed to this unjust ruling. Couple that with the fact that Mr. Mette is a Chicago police officer, a group receiving very negative press lately, and the judge and prosecutor appear to be very biased against Mr. Mette. Mr. Mette did not receive a fair trial.
Mr. Culver, I hope that you take a serious look at this case and do whatever you can to right a wrong. It will be very unjust for Mr. Mette to have to spend one day in an Iowa state correctional facility. You can bet that many more people will be made aware of this case and many will have a very negative view of the Iowa State judicial system and, ultimately, Iowa itself if something is not done.
