And Speaking of Shootings...

This great quote in the Channel 7 coverage of the Patrice Brown shooting:
  • Some people questioned why there aren't more police cameras in the neighborhood. The area's alderman said he's already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the visible deterrents.
More cameras? Visible deterrents?

Any media people reading, we'll offer this advice - attempt to arrange a ride along in any of the following police districts (011, 015, 006, 007, 005, 003) to see just how well these cameras "deter" crime. We could take you to dozen cameras right now and show you dope dealing going on within yards, if not directly under, these cameras. We can ask our readers to list shootings and homicides that have occurred within the operational radius of these cameras. We can ask detectives to list all the pod videos they've asked for in the hopes that it might just show a crime being committed or a criminal fleeing the scene.

The fact remains that the people of Chicago are being taken for a multi-million dollar ride. These hundreds of cameras are being fed into a server that can only handle a fraction of the data. These hundreds of cameras have helped solve exactly ONE crime that we ever heard of and that only in conjunction with a concerned citizen who followed a car after a hit and run. These "digital wonders" are at least a generation behind anything London has up and are faulty beyond belief.

They don't deter crime. They can't solve crime. They are horrible witnesses and are looking the wrong way almost as often as the residents of North Lawndale seem to be whenever the police need help solving a shooting. The only thing that stops crime is more cops on the street.

Was in District X (Tryin to remain anonymous) with an arrest. Heard on the radio Detective unit (screaming) on-viewed a person down who had just been shot. I knew it was near a new camera. I loaded up the POD on the PC and DAMN this camera was looking RIGHT @ the guy down and I could tell he was DRT (DeadRightThere) We went out and responded (Like good tac people, not to laugh, but to do a canvas) and I told the Diks "Hey this pod there has a clear shot, you want me to get the number for yah?" This Dik had no clue what I was talking about. Not only did he not know what the POD was, he didn't know how it worked. (Thank You Merit!) Anyho, I called some numbers and had them "Save the tape" all happy I did something good (Patin back motion...). Well weeks later I heard they couldn't get shit off of the Video. This is from a camera 40 feet away, BRAND NEW with the WHOLE SCENE in its automatic pan view. Cameras are like an ADT sticker. They are to scare people away, nothing more.

When will the Chicago media pickup on the dangerously low level of police officers on the street?

Will it take a breaking national news story to expose what is going on?

The push is on to buy a t-shirt for the UNCF and the interim Boss Man. Being as the UNCF is a private firm and excludes caucasians from their programs, then one should truly understand that just as a mind is a terrible thing to waste, so is my money. Only in this fugged up world we live in can reverse discrimination be openly tolerated and promoted, by this department and city, when it affects caucasians. The decisions made by the UNCF are strictly based on racial preference and being caucasian is not a preference they chose.

If you can take me under a camera where they are dealing, why aren't the dealers locked up? Maybe the tact team or anyone else in the district(desk crew sitting on their a--) should pull up the camera on their computer, call in the crime in progress, with a physical description and lock up the piece of crap. Someone dealing under a camera is not an indictment of the camera, it is an indictment of the police officer too lazy to do something about the crime occuring under it. Last time I checked, the cameras still don't put cuffs on people, they are a tool to be used by police officers who as described in your original post do not know how or are not interested in using them.

SCC,
post this editorial from today's Sun-Times. It is priceless:

Keeping our protectors close to home

Requiring Chicago firefighters to live in the city they serve creates a sense of loyalty

August 27, 2007
Chicago firefighters are asking to be paid for living in Chicago -- just one of the many demands their union has put forth in ongoing contract talks.
The requested $3,500-a-year stipend may not seem like a huge sum, but if the firefighters are successful in getting their extra dough, you can bet all of the other city workers who are required to live within the city limits will also demand a "living stipend."

The concept of having to pay people to live in Chicago grates at us. Firefighters make a middle-income wage -- starting in the mid- $40,000s and reaching to the mid-$70,000s after 10 years of service. But they get great health benefits, a pension, a schedule that allows many of them to work second jobs and a generous vacation plan -- 51 days a year. That's seven weeks of vacation -- far better than even firefighters in Paris, where the government guarantees 30 vacation days a year. The average American takes a mere 12 days of vacation. And that's way better than Chicago Police, who get 20 to 25 days off, depending on years of service.

We're not disparaging firefighters their days off. But we don't think it's too much to ask that those who are making a living off Chicago residents should also be Chicago residents. We think firefighters are important community anchors, and we want them residing in our neighborhoods, along with police officers, teachers and other Chicago city workers.

That doesn't mean we are unaware of how difficult it can be to find affordable housing in Chicago -- or the suburbs. We know what we're saying. Salaries for union reporters at the Sun-Times are similar to those of city firefighters -- sans the vacation time.

The median Chicago home is valued at $283,200. But the recent real estate slump coupled with the subprime lending crisis and multiple foreclosures have weakened the market.

It's not impossible to find a deal, if you know where to look. Moderate-income families -- defined as those earning $38,622 to $78,825 a year -- are well-represented in areas dubbed "stable diversity," according to Chicago housing experts. That includes Ashburn and Kenwood on the South Side, East Side on the eastern portion of the city, and West Ridge, to name a few.

Moreover, the city and schools offer home-buying programs for police, firefighters, paramedics and teachers.

The Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2 should keep this in mind as it continues to hash out contract terms with City Hall.

To protect Chicago homes, city firefighters need to live in Chicago's homes. This breeds a bottom-line loyalty when our protectors are one of us.

The only thing Johnny Haircut Blago has done as governor is recently slashing funding for CeaseFire!

-----------------------------------

An outreach worker for CeaseFire, a Chicago-based group that tries to curb gang conflicts and stop shootings, was arrested over the weekend after an AK-47, a handgun, live marijuana plants and drug paraphernalia were allegedly found in his home, police said.

Louie Velasquez, 23, of the 3400 block of West 37th Place had been working with the program for about four months, said Gary Slutkin, founder of the program. After the organization learned of his arrest, Velasquez was fired, he said.

Velasquez was alone in the home when he was arrested about 10 p.m. Saturday and charged with cannabis production, owning a firearm and ammunition without a valid firearm owner's identification card, police said. Police said he had boxes of ammunition, sun lamps, a loaded .38-caliber revolver and gang paraphernalia, in addition to CeaseFire pamphlets and T-shirts.

When i was in the academy a few years ago for training, the boss who was in charge of all the PODS gave us a 2 hr block of training on them. I forget his name but seemed like a good guy.

He said that one POD cost over $20,000 and they were bought with recovered drug money. But only these PODS could be placed in heavy drug areas. And per the ACLU, they had to be moved every 90 days. So POD #1 had to be moved from a pole to another...possibly just 100ft away. Well it cost the city over $10,000 to move this POD because of the various unions that were involved. What a joke!

Since then, i've noticed a bunch of smaller PODS near high schools and such that are not the Drug Pods.

So as a dick i ordered many dvds (Maybe 12 or so) of the PODS near shootings because the W/Cs thought the world of them. All i ever saw was the pod zoom in on the word JAY. Weird i must say. i felt like these PODS are great...they are telling me who the offender is in all of these shootings. Figured there must be a pattern. So i put a community alert out for this Jay guy.

I went to all of the CAPS meetings begging the citizens to tell me who JAY was. I figured this was my ticket to merit SGT. I often daydreamed of even making LT someday and being in charge of the PODS (My heros).

Well soon there was another shooting and I was thrilled to get the DVD in the police mail. I played it and sure enough the screen showed JAY on it. I continued to play it and the camera slowly zoomed out. I knew that this was the time that I would identify JAY via the POD.

Then as the camera zoomed out, my heart and all of my dreams were broken. Yes, JAY was a potato chip bag.

So I took a little heat at the Area and my friends nicknamed me "JAY".

But the joke is on them cause my last shooting's DVD showed the name, "Frito Lay".

• • Translation: At a candlelight vigil planned next month to mark the first anniversary of the Police Memorial Park behind Soldier Field, Cline will announce the foundation will now provide college scholarships. Bravo.

Cline is beyond belief in his shamelessness and egotism, anything to promote himself and capture press. Horrendously, this is all done on the graves of our dead heroes.

Mary Mitchell is a definite SCC reader and is actually making sense in her column today:

'The people' would confront cop
Suppose Taniya and Patrice had been mistakenly shot by a jittery white police officer who thought the unidentified male they were talking to had a weapon?
"The people" would have packed the street to confront the cop who fired the shots, as they did after the recent police shooting involving Aaron Harrison, 18.

Yet, it isn't the out-of-control cops who regularly kill black children.

According to the Chicago Police Department, so far this year there have been 27 police-involved shootings -- 12 of them fatal. Of the 27 police shootings, 10 involved persons 19 years old and under.

During that same period, 1,253 persons were shot by random civilian gunfire. Of that number, 410 victims were 19 years old and under. The total number of fatal shootings in this age group was 44. Also, four teenagers were bludgeoned, four were stabbed, one was burned to death and four others were killed by an unknown weapon.

Chicagoans like Patrice Brown's grandmother are begging authorities to do more.

"The police need to clean this block out," Darlene Brown said after the shooting. "These people are just rowdy. They walk down the street selling their drugs and shooting their guns; they just don't care."

They have not cared for a long time.

Chicago City Colleges will train students for jobs in the casino industry -- including blackjack dealers -- "when and if" the Legislature approves the on-again-off-again plan for a land-based Chicago casino, Chancellor Wayne Watson said Monday.

Run a pod mission! Now, if you can just find the tact team that isn't getting their 2 or 4 head a day minimum out of the way while running warrant missions, reverse stings, Search Warrants, and don't forget their show up a half hour late every day and their two hour breakfast or lunch, along with the 30 stacked narcotics job already, court time, useless details on the west end...

...you see the point? We got no people and the people we got aren't supervised at all. This whole department is a joke for accountability.

There is a particular corner in a south side district that they constantly shoot at and people get shot too. Guess what, there is a camera smack dab on the corner pole. I on-view shots fired and was on the block within seconds with no fleeing cars to be seen leading me to believe the shooters ran into a home so I called down there and filled out the two forms in the proper time frame requesting to view the pod tape to see what house the shooters live in. Guess what, they lost my request and the tape was lost.

Not to mention, we (the police) if interested in viewing a pod cam from out pc's in the station can only view 25% of the camera's in place thats if the pc's option to view even works which half the time they don't.

You want to slow or stop all these shootings, violence and crime. HIRE MORE POLICE!

For the idiot that is complaining that we(the police) bitch too much on this blog. Well dumbass, this department and city has never been so fucked up as it is right now. There is lots to bitch about.

When will the Chicago media pickup on the dangerously low level of police officers on the street?

Will it take a breaking national news story to expose what is going on?

Just to preface my comment, I am a working street detective. I have spoken to detectives all over the city about the use of these cameras. So tet me answer the question: how many of anything has been solved with the use of these [sec expensive] deterrents? My answer is to my knowledge: one. That would be ONE crime. And they put such faith in these mechanical marvels that they insist you research to see if there is a camera anywhere near the scene. No matter you couldn't see squat if you needed it. Never mind that it is two blocks away and couldn't take a picture of whatever you wanted in the first place. Just find out, and just in case order a CD to be made. Then watch the damn thing. Then inventory it. What a monumental waste of time, money, and materials better spent elsewhere. But it looks good and sound oh so wonderful to the media. Too bad they'll never ask somebody who knows, and they'd probably never believe us anyway.

Matt Drudge's(Drudge Report) Opinion of Government Surveillance Cameras:

Matt Drudge is on his favorite theme, surveillance cameras everywhere, his belief that Google wants to spy on us and pass it all on to the government. At such times, Drudge comes off as a hunted man. “I just don’t want to be watched when I’m visiting the Lincoln Memorial, going through Penn Station, or walking down Hollywood Boulevard. So many cameras everywhere. And now you start feeding that into some kind of database and start linking it up with a Fascist company like Google? This is a serious issue. And it’s not given serious consideration—when it is a total transformation of our society and our liberties. What gives you a right? Why are you watching me? People say, well, what do you have to hide, Drudge? What do you have to hide? You know what? The burden should be on them. I think I have a right not to be watched.”

"Was in District X (Tryin to remain anonymous) with an arrest. Heard on the radio Detective unit (screaming) on-viewed a person down who had just been shot."

Let me state this clearly: You are a fucking tool. I've been a dick 10 years this fall and I don't know shit about pods, nor do I care to. Does that mean I'm merit? Don't know shit about seat belt missions or wolf pack missions either. Am I still merit? It's all just silly shit on the radio to me. Great job saving the tape though. Put yourself in for a "junior G-man" badge. Was the murder solved? Damn Joe, all your detective work for nothing. Solving ghetto murders is a two step process. You gotta get your ass out on the street and then find bodies to put in rooms. That's where murders are solved; in the room. I can name a half dozen murders off the top of my head that happened within 100 feet of a pod and all it did was take a picture of it's feet. When an officer of your fine skills makes detective, and you will, I'd like for you to come to Area 4 so we can have an official "pod Detective". That way if we have any questions, we have a resident hand-job that knows everything about pods sitting around. The D unit is badly in need of another know-it-all dick that spends the whole tour surfing the net. Best of luck Supercop.

Someone came over the air in 003 last night and the dispatcher was like "who's on zone7?" Since she never heard of the beat before. The voice on the other side said "I'm watching the POD at 62/Cottage." and the voice went on to give officers information regarding a robbery suspect. Needless to say it ended up being a big 19/P but I was amazed that someone was watching the POD! There's been god knows how many shootings in front of that POD at 62/Cottage.

What a bunch of fuckin idiot police on this blog. Thanks for the entertainment though, you keep me coming back. "Phat Phil," as you call him, is getting publicity to promote a scholarship for deceased officers kids, and that makes him shameless and an asshole? WOW! I don't get it.
On the POD's, what you have to realize is that they move randomly. I'm no mathematician, but...... considering the cameras move 360 degrees, the chance of a random moving camera capturing a split second action on camera are probably as good as winning the lotto, not good. In terms of finding the form to retrieve video from a POD, it's on the intranet. Try looking for it you brain dead fucks, your mommy and daddy don't work here so use a little initiative. Next, think under what bureau might you find something related to a POD, and start there.
I have requested videos five times and have gotten the video back every time. I know, it freaked me out too. But it actually worked. Remember though, here's the tough part kiddies, I actually had to sit down and control the camera, yes it can be done, and spend some time actually monitoring said camera. It's amazing what you'll see.
Now, shut the fuck up if you don't know what you're talking about and go home and be miserable to your family. Signed an officer with 21 years on the job that still loves going to work every day.
Lets here some more from you guys that actually enjoy going to work like me. It would be a breath of fresh air on this blog. Thank you for your time.

1st off _ Chicago Police built that Credit Union with their money. It was set up for Police Officer's and their immediate family members. Now they accept anyone that wants to open an account not just Police! They can shove this bank because thats what its turned into. Its no longer really serving us. I withdrew and urged every family member to do like wise. If I wanted an ordinary bank there's plenty to choose from. They need to get Chicago Patrolmen out of the name, its a disgrace and now false advertisement. Chicago Police Officers primary and required lanuage is English if they feel the need to be politically correct. Things that should really irk you.
Screw them withdraw......!!!!!!! They screwed you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree, put Federal into it and thats what you get. Open borders come one come all, can we sue for the
miss-use of the name. Its now just a tool for them to use anyway. I withdrew also. Are they still giving out pictures of Chicago squad cars on their cards? Their an insult, rates not that great either. Every one should withdraw every single cop, retiree and encourage your family members to do the same. Do they still try to do their hooking up in the academy for loans on uniforms? City must have a contract with these traders for those loans if it still going on at this late stage with the changes. Loan Sharks.

I thought the purpose of a credit union was to provide services, loans, higher rates of return to its members. This is not the case with the Chicago Patrolman's Federal Credit Union.

If you need a loan go to www.bankrate.com and lookup the most competitive rates nationwide. You will see that the credit union blows in comparison to other institutions.

There are personnel at OEC that are specifically paid to watch the pods for crime and to generate events when they see crimes in progress. This is their sole purpose for drawing a paycheck. so far it has netted a bunch of illegally parked cars,a few people drinking unk substances and an occasional PERSON SMOKING IN A BUS SHELTER. So apparently these are the only crimes commited within sight of the cameras

You're right to say the London cameras are more advanced, but they're different in at least two ways Chicagoans wouldn't accept:

1. They're used throughout the day to generate millions of dollars in city income by levying fines on motorists. Make an illegal turn, drive in a bus lane, breathe at the wrong time and you'll get a $150 fine in the mail, along with a photo of you caught in the act.

2. There's no light to let you know they're there, although it's safe to assume you're on camera, wherever you are.

Cop-watchdog nominee backed

Mayor Richard Daley's appointee to lead a revamped police Office of Professional Standards won unanimous approval Tuesday from a City Council committee and she said her biggest challenge would be rebuilding public confidence in OPS and the Police Department.

"Success is if we can get to the point where an investigation is done and most people will be confident in the integrity and the thoroughness of that investigation," said Ilana Rosenzweig, whose appointment as chief administrator of OPS will go before the full City Council next month.

Aldermen in the Police and Fire Committee meeting generally praised Rosenzweig and her résumé, although some questioned her knowledge of Chicago.

Rosenzweig said she hopes that OPS can work cooperatively with the Police Department because the goal is to build trust and make improvements

NICE TO SEE THAT A GANGBANGER AND A FAKE ASS REVEREND CAN DISPENSE ADVICE TO THE NEW HEAD OF OPS AT A CITY COUNCIL MEETING:

“Welcome to hell…Chicago is at the boiling point that California was at when Rodney King got beat up,” former gang enforcer Wallace “Gator” Bradley told Rosenzweig.

The Rev. Paul Jakes, a former mayoral challenger, noted that there have been 20 shootings at the hands of police this year, 10 of them fatal, including the recent death of 18-year-old Aaron Harrison.

“There are too many trigger-happy cops out there and they think black life is cheap,” Jakes said.

THIS SOUNDS GOOD,LETS HOLD HER TO IT:

When several aldermen demanded fairness for officers falsely accused of wrongdoing, Rosenzweig promised just that.

“I’ve talked to officers who have had allegations against them and are concerned that, even when the allegation is proved to have been false, that the cloud will continue to hang over them. That happens particularly when investigations are not trusted. When you build trust in the investigation process, that benefits the officer falsely accused because then, the investigation is trusted,” she said.

PODS Good or Bad.Doesn't matter. Here's some technical info for you on a way to use the web to get a look at them.
From a CPD computer, go to
http://172.16.97.10/podssvideo/start.asp into your browser.
(This is private IP address that is only accessible from the CPD Intranet)
You'll be given an authentication string for a username and password.
Use your district for both.
(i.e. 012/012)
You should come up with a list of POD cameras you want to view.
Once you select the camera you want to view, there is an option to review what the camera has stored locally.(it should be on the top, left side) It goes back about 72 hrs. You can use the the little slider at the bottom to roll back to the date and time you want to review from.
It would be very easy for the desk crew at a district monitoring a radio to to look up an incident and review the POD if something happened near one of them. If they can catch anything, maybe even give a description over the air.
If we can catch the offender, then we can request a DVD of it for evidence.
Just a thought.Good luck!!

my partner and I did a test not too long ago. we went over to a corner with the big blue light. we hung out for over an hour both of us were in street clothes and off duty. we both had our guns showing as we pretended to just "chill and loiter" on the corner. I even gave the camera "the bird". this was all done to prove a point. the police were never called, the police never showed up, shit - the police never even drove by. proves two things, the manpower shortage with no police presence in a hot spot with a camera and that the camera's are a sample of this city's smoke and mirrors.

What's up with all the "Hair Gel" police wearing CPD t-shirts in the local gin mills? I would think after the Abbate and Jeffersonian Tap incidents that you would want to be lowkey. There will be another gin mill incident soon with these goofs bravado and lack of commonsense.

Latest and greatest on the pods.Seems the city in it's infinte wisdom, put the juction box for the pods in 11 and 15 in an abandoned building. Then are amazed that scrappers got all the copper wiring, now a car has to sit 24/7 on the site and each beat car is to examine every pod on their beat and generate a event # showing that it's still there! Also Sgt.s are required to annotate their log for each pod sighting. Lets see, 61 pods in 11 X 3 watches 183 useless event #'s to appease someone.

If your "put down" is what passes for an intelligent response in your "clique", then you give yourself way too much credit for being a thinking man!

...It would be very easy for the desk crew at a district monitoring a radio to to look up an incident and review the POD if something happened near one of them...

Sounds good in theory but the desk crews barely monitor the radio between their talking on their cell phones, reading their magazines, and deciding where to order lunch from.

Hey tough guy,c'mon work the desk, you'll love it. I'll switch with you anytime.

You mean you're being "forced" to work the desk? Last I checked, you had to bid for it.

More cops on the street is not the answer in alleviating violent crime. I know it is good for your ego to say so, but it just ain't true. To be effective we would have to become a police state in totalitarian society. NO THANKS!

The way to stop crime is the way it is always stopped anywhere it is stopped, and that is for the ordinary citizen to not tolerate it. To cooperate with the authorities in identifying the miscreants to testify against them and if necessary to be able to protect and defend themselves and their families when necessary from crime or retribution of criminal associates of thugs they have helped convict.

Of course, this won't work in Chicago, because you have suspended the Constitution and created a dictatorship where law abiding people cannot defend or protect themselves, their families, or their neighborhoods.

Only the criminal element exercise freedom because they are not bound by the same code as the law abiding. Isn't there something wrong with that?

Why would any Chicago citizen help the police department solve or prevent crime when they know they cannot legally defend their families from revenge? Why would they be amenable to cooperation with you when you will leave them there helpless and defenseless, and even arrest and prosecute them if they so much as possess the most effective tool of self defense? Would you? HELL NO!

Gun free Chicago, my ass. It's just a meat market for thugs, both in and out of city government.

well,ya see lad, when the regular bid officers are off, someone needs to man the position,so this would be the time for you to ask to work the spot and relax like we all do.

C'mon join us,it's great time. We'll let you man the radio and watch the POD. Oh boy oh boy, what fun eh? We'd love to have you. You'll be our hero.

Someone dealing under a camera is not an indictment of the camera, it is an indictment of the police officer too lazy to do something about the crime occuring under it

--or maybe the fact that they are on a doc mission, backing up a 99 unit, or responding to a "domestic" my 15 y.o. wont listen to me

Last time I checked, the cameras still don't put cuffs on people, they are a tool to be used by police officers who as described in your original post do not know how or are not interested in using them.

--your right cameras dont put cuffs on people. maybe the little leprechaun should hire more police officers to put cuffs on people. true most police officers aren't interested in using a camera to look for crime, most working police officers like to roll up on the 5-10 gang members sorry choir boys congregating on the corner. that way they can see (clearly) who throws the dope, takes off running, or subconciously taps the concealed weapon on his person

but please take more officers off the street to watch tv that way they can watch as the domestic occurs and the victim is killed as opposed to responding to the crime or take even longer to respond to your noise disturbance "dog barking somewhere on the 5th floor of city hall"

but you did peg it on the head by more officers sitting on their progressively fatter asses we can proactively watch tv and reduce crime

i'd say go back to work but you're prolly looking for parking somewhere near 35th and michigan right now
