Ok....Um....

Alright, we're all for positive stories about the police. Seriously. We need a break from bad news. But we aren't sure this is it:
  • If you've got one hand on the wheel and another pressing a phone against your head, you better steer clear of Officer Ramon Solidum. He doesn't want to brag, but he considers himself the "super cop" of Chicago's cell-phone ban.

Two years after Chicago outlawed the use of hand-held cell phones while driving, police officers are issuing more citations than ever, and Solidum is leading the pack.

The city's 13,600 officers had issued 25,432 cell-phone citations through mid July, and the median number of tickets issued by each officer was 2, according to a Tribune analysis of city data.
First up, we've proven time and time again that manpower is nowhere near 13,600 unless you include sergeants, lieutenants, captains, detectives, deputy chiefs, chiefs, assistant deputy superintendents, deputy superintendents, and interim superintendents. The number of actual officers working the streets is somewhere under 6,000.

The article goes on from there:
  • The way Solidum sees it, enforcing the cell-phone ordinance keeps streets safe and preserves his credibility as a cop.
And the kicker:
  • These findings call into question the widespread assumption that the city's cell-phone ordinance is not enforced, a belief the ordinance's sponsor, former Ald. Burton Natarus (42nd), shares. "I talked to the Police Department, and I surmised this is not a priority," Natarus said. "It's not enforced the way it should be."

Ald. Brian Doherty (41st), who admitted to having violated the cell-phone ordinance, agreed. "Very few tickets have been written on that," he said, adding that he hadn't viewed the citations. "The police aren't looking for this as something they want to enforce. They've got better things to do."
These numbers would seem to give lie to Natarus and Doherty claiming the ordinance isn't being enforced. But here's the thing:
  • This is EXACTLY the type of officer the City wants nowadays.
He's generating revenue. Evidently, LOTS of revenue. He's enforcing a hot button issue ticket that the aldercreatures want enforced. He's held up as an enforcer of law and order and pushed to the fore by News Affairs or whoever arranges these sanitized press interviews in an effort to generate some sort of non-negative publicity.

Does he come off as a bit of a odd ball? Sure. Most traffic guys have their pet peeve that they'll write every single time - look at your DUI kings, your sound impounders, the guy who will come up for every single accident and hammer the suspended/revoked drivers no one else wants to touch. These are necessary officers to have around and there aren't too many of them around, but they can carry an entire district worth of numbers.

For this reason, we WILL NOT be publishing any additional criticisms of Officer Solidum. We'll let the Tribune article stand on its own. Everyone can make their own judgments and if they want to confront Solidum, they can do it on their own time or on their own blog. We're pretty sure he didn't choose to give this interview.

But when you read this article, remember, he's doing the job he was assigned to do, and he's not going to be in federal court getting sued over a cell phone ticket.

That is one of my biggest pet peeves! Most people are moderately bad drivers on their own valition. Throw in a cell phone to this toxic mix and you have all the necessary ingredients for disaster. Write away.

Rumor has it Charlie William's new initiative is called "Operation No Talk".

The TRU will be assigned to do Cell Phone Missions with corresponding Event #'s and must issue 25 movers a piece at each roadblock.

There is a whole in the city budget which must be filled for the 2016 Olympics and to provide free transit to all low income citizens.

It's all good hit the working man and let the real criminals do whatever they want.

It is afterall, only about the revenue and the smoke and mirrors...

Being distracted is the cause of accidents not talking on a cell phone. What is the difference if you are using a Blue Tooth? You are still distracted.

What about driving with a car full of unruly children?

The actual number of OFFICERS ALONE is 10155. Well this fact debunks your 6000, consider that units on the street include, tru, sos, tact gangs, bike patrol, summer mobile etc. etc. etc.
13.600 is the total with all ranks, do not forget that the Det. div. is also on call should a manpower need arise (1,166). District patrol is isolated to geographical areas to cover the entire city, units are not.

I wrote over 20 of these tickets when the cell phone ban first came out. When I appeared in court, the judge said, "raise your hand if you were issued a cell phone ticket and nothing else." The judge then stated, "consider this a warning, you're all dismissed." I never wrote another cell phone ticket again.

You go P.O. Cellphonestopper!

Personally, I drive a covert car cause I'm in narcotics cause my daddy used to drink with one of the deputy supt.'s. The other day I was talking on my cell phone to my chinaman hoping to get the newly created spot of paper-clip-cup-filler when all of sudden...WHAM! I smashed right into a bus stop at 79th and Cottage Grove. Knowing that I have nothing to fear on this job, I just kept right on going. I'm sure most of the people on the stop were OK. But it did get me thinking that boy those cellphones can be super dangerous. Boy, I'm glad someone is doing something about that.

I've always thought of traffic enforcement as just a way to catch real crooks, but these people on their celll phones are a menace. It's hard enough to get around the city with a stop sign on every corner without having to drive behind somebody on a cell phone going 20 mph because they're so engrossed in their conversation. The worst ones seem to be the women in minivans.

The best is to issue them to cab drivers on an ANOV it goes against their chauffer license. I hate cab drivers and anytime I can catch them on the phone I write because they make them pay it, not like in traffic court where if for whatever reason I am not there they throw it out. I try never to miss because yes it is a major pet peeve. The other day I was going to an in-progress call and some bimbo was on her cell phone looking directly at me and still did not move even with lights and sirens. Her car window was even open and she still failed to notice me until I stopped and yelled at her to get off her phone and move over so I could pass. I am fortunate enough to work in a district whose residents have a ridiculous sense of entitlement and I luv giving them the cell phone citations.

Even though we are exempt under the law, it still doesn't set a favorable tone with the citizens.
All I'm saying is, even though the law exempts us, USE DISCRETION.
The true "goofs" on this job are the ones who drive around all day with their phones glued to their ears. If we notice it, you better believe the citizens make note of it too. Not only that, but if you're riding around yakking on the phone for most of your tour of duty, you're really not serving and protecting very well...
