Boxing Championship Tidbit
From someone in the know evidently:
- SCC, just heard this amazing bit of news. In order to cover the security for this worldwide event and Olympics preview, they shut down three units! Fugitive Apprehension, Financial Crimes and Asset Forfeiture have been closed down for two weeks and every single Detective is detailed to the event. Some of these units have even put up phone messages saying they'll be out of the office for two weeks.
If true, this is amusing on many levels. First up, we'd say we found three units that must be pretty useless if they can shut them down for 14 days and assume no one will notice their absence. Secondly, what special security skills do these Detectives have that can't be covered by PO's? Third, if this is a mandatory detail, shouldn't there have been seniority bidding for the OT opportunity? And lastly, aren't the Cubs, Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks and everyone else who has to PAY for additional police to be on the scene of events going to be more than a little ticked off that the World Boxing Championships get free service?

I don't know how factual the shutting down of those three units is. There was a team from Fugitive App in Area 3 today with a prisoner.
I know a bunch of dicks are assigned to the various hotels and for a city that is so broke, they are using a ton of police manpower for this private event. I don't think anyone is making any OT on this, butit sure seems like a waste of manpower.
You are correct! However every Area is sending 2 DET on each watch for security. I thought this was supposed to be OT for an event. This was all done by reverse senority with no one wanting to go! They are making the dicks from the areas go to this thing! Where is the union on this issue! Once again FOP is no where to be found!
If go forbid we get the olyimpics are we not to assume becasue of this our department expects us to chip in and help out for free???

SCC- a regular detective sir cannot get assigned to any of these do nothing take home car units. To be assigned there SCC you need political sponsorship, much like the brand new detective former court officer sister of retired deputy Clarke. The highly decorated house cat upon a sucessful police career in the court section went to dick school and immediately went to financial crimes.
Fugitive apprehension is a joke merit clout babies such as the highly decorated son of the former high sheriff from the 19th ward.

it is amazing training new detectives and being told that they are going to a spot in the fugitive apprehension unit.
Why arent the patronage Hacks from intelligence going to the security detail. Now we could do with out them since we have to beg and plead with them to develop a security tape or place a monitor or look for a trap in a ride.
And lets not forget the do nothings in the COLD Case Squad. They should have been assigned there since all they do is back door the regular violent crimes detectives with all there sneaky resources that the dicks in the area do not have.
When I made dick they would have in service seminars regarding dignitary protection given by the secret service and the state police. This was ussually a three day vacation at the acedemy. it stopped when slim phil and pillow head molloy came into power. We were advised that patrol was going to take it over possibly SOS/Swat guys.
Just like there could be no dicks on the mayors security detail. That was all BS.
The city is pulling out all the stops for this... This will prove that WE CAN hold major sporting events. Olympics 2016 here we come!!!

REALLY? I made Detective 10 years ago. Never had any training of the nature that you're alluding to.
Highly suspect of the tale your spinning, being any sort of training is pretty much non-existent. Guess I must have missed that in the CO Book or was not a chosen one to attend. Maybe I was on furlough, yeah that's the ticket

Did anybody even consider the fact that the reason they are not considereing using the Tact or Gang teams(that usually handle these events) is because they feel they may be too "unprofessional" and they may do something "stupid" or "look bad" (uniforms, goatees etc.) to the media or citizens attending the event?
You know since blue shirt personnel are the bottom feeders and the D Unit are considered more respectable and prone to following orders. Less worries for CR #'s and more bad media?
Our leaders lack of respect toward the general population of blue shirts is what I am referring to here. The 2 yr wonders or "go getters" or hard chargers (regardless of time on the job) or should I say possible CR.# getters are too much of a liability or RISK for the brass, to be considered professional enough to represent the CITY for something like this. SLOBS?
Just my observation of what the bosses @ 35th st. may have considered as the media has blitzed us recently!
So my point here is... Tact and Gangs keep getting them the heads and contact cards the desire for the number game that doesn't include you! So believe them as they tell you how good you are as the DOC meetings require you help to show progress!

I volunteered to help and got stuck washing the boxers' protective/support cups. Wow, my tongue is tired and numb.
Fugitive Apprehension reminds me of my days on the tact team, when each team had a guy or 2 who made all of their activity off of the warrant list. Ok, guys with warrants and wanted guys need to be caught, but a trained monkey can do that shit-get names and addresses from dicks or the G, sit on the house or baby mommas house and eventually he shows up. Give me a break, what no fugitives during the boxing? You want to appehend somebody? Go out to a district apprehend some goof with a gun. Or go apprehend a burglar after he steals my lawn mower.
Yeah, I can't wait to see the clusterfuck 2016 is going to create. Its only, we'll go thru 2 more Supts before that happens, so no one will know what the fuck to do.
Remember to use 6 bag and lots of rebar to keep out the hoard.
You forgot about the son of former member of thebomb and arson section, the son (4 wonderkid) was told that he was going to an area. The kid got scared called the father to who call maria and POOF! He is now getting bomb tech pay. The rest of the class were asked for their 1 and 2nd choice of assignment. AT Least make the process look a little legit.
P.S. can't wait till maria (can't hold a light to a real detectives short and curlys) gets the boot!

I heard part of the reason they need the security is that all of these guts, the fighters, come in with bags and bags of cash. my understanding is that no matter how good you are at throwing hands for the glory of Bulgaria, Captiol One still won't approve you for a Visa card.
And not one person from the patrol division. Does this mean that maybe, just maybe the city is accepting that we might be a little light in the patrol division?

Well for your information genius they are using the gang teams, was down there last night and will be back again and again. So you can now go back to pushing your beat car around, see nothing, do nothing and bitch as much as possible about how over worked you are
Scc here's one for you... maybe I'm wrong here but isn't this some type of violation or something...
The order for this boxing fiasco comes out and one of the requirements for us is
1. No Cargo pants
2. No Baseball Caps
3. No Black Vest covers
My thing is this order comes out on a Tuesday, as a person who has over 10 on the job after they went ahead and allowed the uniform matrix to say that cargo pants are an acceptable field uniform and after noticing that my regular unifor pants were all in need of replacement I went out and bought the cargo pants, the BB cap. Now I have to go out and spend money to get the regular pants because why? The cargo pants aren't fiield uniform approved for international boxing?
I'd like to know because I know of more than a few guys who had to go out and shell out some money at uniform stores to comply with the Hibbity Jibbity 35th street rules...
We do have special skills in the D-unit its called sport coats and red shoes so muhahahah

NO. It's the other areas where your light that concerns them.
One only needs to look toward the event, boxing, and who the most recent up and coming promoter is to figure out what the big deal is.
Go South and you will notice one very influential family who has big boxing, Mercy Home and political ties. Their resonates with fear and power, at times more than the Daley Family.
The leader of this family was a P.O. for about 20 minutes then made his way to the state capital claiming to be a former police officer while all of the children committed felonies.
When perplexed by issues as such, one must ask who would financially benefit from such a swing-ding.
Follow the money.
Gotta love the city's thinking on this one...we are so poor, so lets pay DET's overtime? Wouldn't it make more sense to send a lower pay grade?
btw, gang teams are going to be there as well, the letter from the bluetoof guy states that we have to be in uniform, and that we will be subject to a strict uniform inspection, F**K T***M
They are taking PPOs that are off of thier training cycles out of the districts for this too.
They put units out there so the PO's over at the building do not have to temporarily change watches to accomodate the detail. God Forbid they have to work the street much less third watch. As far as the Units taking a 3 week hiatus, they are staggering days so the units always have a skeleton crew. You would think that Those Office clowns would voluntarily do it since they have it so good. FUCK NO though.

Actually, SCC, they are sending a ton of PPO'S over to guard the boxers at the various hotels where they are housed; these PPO's will be detailed beginning this Friday, I believe, and will work all three shifts for the remainder of Don King's "main event."

First of all, as a det in one of those units consider "useless" all I can say I've made more felony arrests with successful prosecutions than most of the lame axxholes who think they are so much better. None of us want to be there because we have caseloads that have to go on hold because of this event that we are detailed to. When I come back the files, calls, interviews, evidence review, court, typing of supps, progress reports, line-ups, etc. will all be there waiting for me when I return, with even more cases assigned. We aren't getting any OT and it was offered on a volunteer basis. As you can guess, no one volunteered so it went by reverse seniority. Don't think the FOP wasn't consulted on this. It is all legit according to the contract.
The FOP however, should argue that for "private events" such as a boxing tournement, should be handled by a private security firm hired and paid for by the promoters. If you want additional police protection, make it an OT off-duty deployment function like the movie detail, TARA and O'Hare. Let the promoters pay the tab for the hired police officers. The city shouldn't get stuck with it and pay the tab. I think the officers in Boston (?) or some other major city have this in their contract. This issue must be considered before any other event like this comes to town and especially the Olympics (if we get it). I can't see the city draining thousands of on-duty man hours for that....there just isn't enough to go around on a regular 24 hour watch. If Daley wants the police to man the Olympics he better start hiring now. Thank God I will be retired by then.

why not? there is only 30 square miles to be patrolled in 016. every off-duty copper complains about response time and crime in 016, but, no one ever asks how many police are on the streets at one time. 016 is short just like everyone else, but, with a high percentage of police officers and all city workers (legit tax payers), we should get a little service for our tax dollars. 35th street doesn't give a flying fuck about the residents of 016, the nice parts of 017, 019, 008, 022 to just keep the manpower in the districts that they are assigned. as long as the homicide rate is in check, thats all that they care about. so, to have these few people get this much police service is absurd. there are all sorts of activities in this city...sporting events, concerts, fests, that don't get even a shred of the police service unless they pay the city time and 1/2 for guys and gals on their day off. all for 3500 people ??????? what a FUCKING JOKE !!!

There is need for security at this event. This event involves people that are willing to enter into a sport where the profesionals have no problem letting someone punch them in the head for a dollar. You can play football, you can play basketball,you can play at being the police, but you can't play boxing. These guys are baaad
At least 20 voting members of the International Olympic Committee will be attending the world boxing championships at UIC.
Daley is still in denial about the Chicago Marathon debacle. He wants the 2016 Olympics so desperately that he would do absolutely anything to have the IOC select Chicago in 2009.

VERY TRUE! sgt diaz is all about image and networking - not police work. He'll buddy up to anyone with Clout and give them tickets to sporting events to kiss ass. He is dangerous - he's the next one to look for in the news for unfavorable reasons.
I sincerely hope that security at this event is taken very seriously. As some may know, Louis Farrakhan would use the UIC Pavilion each year for an annual meeting. He provided his own security exclusively and he had his men stationed on each level of the nearby garage. His security detail rightfully perceived that an attack could take place from the garage. It's a surmountable jump from the garage to the roof of the Pavilion. A trained and determined commando type terrorist force could quickly gain access to the roof, and....bad things could happen.
Come to the westside or englewood any night you can watch the fights for free as an added bonus you can also watch someone get killed if they win! boxers need protection guess they are not "tough enough", way to many rocky movies!
