Compromise? Of What?

Always the political puppeteer. First, we have the taxpayers up in arms:
  • After taking five days of heat from livid constituents, Chicago aldermen put Mayor Daley's budget team on notice Monday: They're not about to approve a $293 million tax package that includes the largest property tax increase in Chicago history.
  • One alderman even dared to propose cuts to a Chicago Police Department budget he claimed was laden with "fat."
Gee whiz. What a novel concept. The people's representatives actually listening to the concerns of their constituencies. Of course, this is Chicago, so aldercreatures don't really listen to taxpayers unless they're selling them a driveway permit. And we're trying to find out which alder-asshole suggested the police budget was bloated. We're running short of pool cars with 150,000 miles, can't get computers and radios that work, burning through paper at a tremendous rate and can't hire enough people to keep up with retirements. You want to see bloated, check out 50 aldermanic offices for a city of under 3 million citizens. How is it New York and LA do so much more with less?

So what does Daley do? Offers a compromise:
  • Mayor Richard Daley took a conciliatory tack Tuesday on his proposal to raise property taxes, saying he is optimistic about reaching a compromise with aldermen who oppose it.

"This is very controversial," he said. "I understood that when I presented it. I could have ducked the other way, but I was willing to propose it and listen to the comments about it and find out how we can come out. "

Daley's tone was in marked contrast to last week, when he upbraided aldermen who voiced misgivings about his tax-hike-centered budget plan.
Correct us if we're wrong - For most of this summer, Daley and his people have been warning of a budget shortfall. Just under $200 million if we recall. That's a pretty big gap and hints at quite a bit of uncontrolled spending and not a little wasteful spending. So Daley proposes a combination of tax hikes and service fees totaling how much? $293 million.

Again, correct us if we're wrong, but government is not supposed to be a profit making entity. You can stop laughing about the connected contractors and crooked land deals. Fitzgerald will get there eventually we hope.

But by asking for $293 million, Daley and the aldercreatures can "compromise" at the $190 million mark and pass themselves off as heroes to the voters who are about to get hammered by the State and County governments by claiming to have "saved" everyone a cool hundred million.

Why does it take an amateur cop blog to do the media's job? We guess that the "public watchdog" is more the "mayor's lapdog" when it comes to actually doing right by the people.

SCC What about the Skyway $???? Did anyone know there is over 1 Billion Dollars of tax payer $ in the Chicago Tiffs? This $ is sitting around so connected people can use it later to build more strip malls, Someone should look into this HELLO FOP and the unfriendly media. Stop the witch hunt on the police we have enough problems with the average life expendency of police officers 10 to 12 years on average less than non police. Why? How about stress! The job is stressful enough without reading about your proffesion in the media everyday and a mayor that has no repect for police since the day he opened the door and told the police that watched his house to go get him and his brothers some twinkie and milk!!!!!!!!

But keep going out there for the 1 rock/bag arrests that give you your chump change court time.

Mass exodous from the City and county. Why live here when the cost of air is going to go through the roof.

Me, I am going into the smuggling business. Cigarettes, bottled water, fois gras, and every other legal thing they are going to tax and ban. I will sell it all out of the back of my van.

Of course, some puke new cop with high ethics and morals will try to stop me to make himself look good, but hey, I'll just pay off the Alderman.

SCC, I beg you to come out from hiding and take control. Dump FLOP and get us out of this mess. People listen to you. You have their attention. We need major changes, help and someones undivided attention. People already respect you. Please organize something. Something that tells the Alderbeasts, Mayor, Flop and people of this shit-hole town we are forced to live in that we are not going to sit back and be quiet about things. We need to do something.

Time to start planning better. Shop outside Crook County, buy as much as you can and save taxes.

Time to stop being revenue pimps. Do not write any movers, parkers, or ANOVs, do not tow or impound cars. No more money from us. Hell, they cannot make you do anything if enough of you just stop doing the revenue enforcement.

Just lock up bad guys, go to court, and collet the OT in cash. Screw the mayor and the Toddler. Living in this city will drive us into bankruptcy, so we may as well bankrupt the city.

I've said it before and I'll say it again you are a fool to come on this job now and you are a fool if you continue working for this department. There is no support from the FOP, the city or the citizens of the city. Taxes are going through the roof and with the pathetic raise that the FOP is asking for it won't cover the city taxes that are being increased nor will it cover the county taxes that are being increased. We"re actually losing money. For tose of you who have to much time on to leave, it sucks to be you. Stay safe doing your job but I'm taking my ass outa here for a better department and a better place to live.

Cut the aldermen, their staffs, office allowences etc. etc., that's how to save money. Here are some interesting facts: Los Angeles has a population of 3.85 million people over 470 square miles. They have 15 city council members. They meet on Tuesdays, Wednsdays, and Fridays of every week. They get paid $149,000 a year. New York City has 8.2 million people over 322 square miles. They have 51 council members that have term limits, allowing only two 4 years terms. They get paid $112,000. And now Chicago. Population 2.8 million over 227 square miles. Our aldermen get paid $99,000 a year, meet once a month for city council meetings, and can stay for life. Our aldermen also get an 80% pension after 10 years in office! How can any sane person justify having 50 aldermen when New York, with three times as many citizens and 100 square miles bigger, has the same number? LA has less than a third of the aldermen we have. They have over a million more residents and it's twice the size of Chicago. You want to cut the fat Mr. Alderman? Look in the mirror.

**********************************

This happens much more than you think, and not only in 022. Gas? Are you kidding me? This is a practice which is fraught with liability for everyone. What if theres an accident? Who pays? Will the department say that they told you to take your car? FUCK NO. They would get hung in court. That being said, some officers take their own car because the alternative is standing all day. Make them give you a car, or refuse the assignment.

You can't refuse the assignment, and you can't make them give you a car, they need to provide you with transportation to your post, and breaks, but they do NOT have to provide you with a vehicle if you have a foot or stationary post.

And yes, the CPD is over in exempt rank by about 20%.
How about some news type actually doing some "investigative" reporting?

Here are idea to raise millions in tax revenue. Force adults who own a bicycle or tricycle or any other type of pedicycle to purchase a city vehicle tag much as the same are issued to motorcycles. And those people that roller blade should be taxed also. While we are at it the pedicyclist should be required to carry insurance to cover any damage they cause or pain they inflict when they become involved in crashes. When is the last time you saw a pedicyclist stop for a red light. Issue tickets and there is a cash cow right there. An untapped source of revenue pedicyclist and roller bladers.
