Feel Safe Yet?

  • New statistics show a high number of luggage screeners fail to detect harmful materials when put to the test.
  • The tests were performed last year when federal agents for TSA traveled through security with realistic but fake bombs in their luggage -- screeners in Los Angeles failed 75 percent of the time, and Chicago-O'Hare failed 60 percent of the time.
Once again, demonstrating why we only drive on vacation anymore.

What really makes me pissed/off is that something of this nature should not be made public. Why encourage these terrorists bastards. Fix the defects, retrain or fire them(TSAs) but lets fix the problem.

Sixty percent is a disgrace, my spare house key in my wallet never once in this country set of the TSA detectors. Not so in Europe.
At Heathtrow and in Milan the key buried under my credit cards went off and the wallet was hand searched. Also our shoes were checked inside and outside.

This is the greatest country in the world we must protect our own at all costs. Sometimes freedom in the media goes too far, sorry to offend any one.

Just the other day at O'Hare the woman behind me had her carry on hand searched after the TSA screener spotted something.

Lucky for her she was a buxom blonde. Although she had a large can of shaving cream (men's BTW) in her bag, she didn't have to give it up to the male screener. He simply said , "next time make sure it's under 3 ounces and in a quart bag."

NEXT TIME!!! What about this time? Okay she didn't fit the profile, but neither do I and I had to let everyone in line see my personal hygiene items!

90% percent of the TSA screeners are worthless, acting as if they are there pro bono instead of being paid handsomely and with benefits.

Not suprising, have you seen the people they get to do the screening? Sure, they bost about how they have strengthened their checkpoints but they don't tell you how they hired a bunch of highschool dropouts and lazy asses to do the work for low wages.

I returned from a trip tonight. I was in the screening area putting my shoes and shit back on (not in Chicago, but the example works) and some woman walked right around the magnetometer to hand some papers to another woman on the other side. The screeners didn't catch it till she walked away, and one of them said "we need a wall there". Those airports are a terror attack waiting to happen. Some of the screeeners do a good job, but there sure a lot just collecting a check and wondering when the next break starts.

And in San Francisco, the lack of detection was 20%. SF uses a private company, not Thousands Standing Around.

after billions and billions of dollars wasted on TSA, you would think we could go back to the much less costly system we had before that was every bit as effective.

remember, box cutters were not banned before 9/11, and governemnt employees had a pretty good idea something was going on, but were PREVENTED from taking action by policies put in place by a previous administration.

TSA is not the best, brightest or most motivated people on earth. and the PC nonsense is off the chart. i (a P.O.)was once selected for a RANDOM search along with my girlfriend (a school teacher) and we joined a uniformed pilot in being hand searched. we were all blue/blnd with plenty of I.D. what a waste of resources......but at least they were not profileing male middleasterners 18-34.
we are doomed !

I feel pretty safe. The terrorism threat has been way over-hyped all along. They want to make you think it's WORLD WAR III instead of Northern Ireland #2.

It's possible someone will smuggle a bomb onto a plane again. If so, they may kill the people on the plane, which is roughly the number that die on Chicago's streets in a month. Sad, yes. Enough to get me worried?? Gimme a break.

How can anybody be shocked at the numbers. Do you see who they hire to fill the spots for TSA. I have to look twice all the time to see if I recognized ole girl or ole boy from the hood or looking them up.

Glad to see someone is making a rational assessment of risk. Sure, they hire underpaid, non-union stiffs to do that job, because it's all for show anyway, so you don't need to pay for real law enforcement.

You could take all the real law enforcement done by the feds in a year, and it wouldn't compare to what one tac unit does in a month.

Went to TARA training for one week and learned quite a bit. I know the Department is being compensated by the Feds so they spend the money to train us. The information and training was useful and it makes me very afraid to think that some untrained security guard is screening luggage at one of the busiest airports in the world. The TSA people are not well compensated and their supervision is lax. The terror networks are out there and just waiting for another opportunity to make us suffer another 9-11

It's even worse as far as what gets by and into the cargo holds.

Many times, it isn't even about somebody trying to sneak a bomb or other incendiary device on board for destructive purpose, just some shippers trying to shave costs and increase profit margins by burying haz mat items deep into their shipper built pallets in order to avoid paying the fee for handling them.

Think valujet writ large.

Most airports in Europe use real cops for screening and airport security. Why not here in the U.S.? What does the Aviation Police do? Really, I have no idea what they do? Does anyone know why the city is supporting that agency?

The screening process is 1000 times better since the TSA took over. Anyone remember what would get thru before the TSA took over? There are flaws in every agency, look at the Chicago Police Department.

As an old gray haired woman, I was surprised when I was pulled out of line at O'Hare.......but I must say that everyone on the plane must have been relieved when they confiscated my toothpaste. I know they all felt safer. Many of them approched me to say "Thank God they took your toothpaste. Now I can sleep during the flight".
Excuse my sarcasism!

Actually there is no evidence that less prohibited items get through with TSA than got through with private security. The problem with both O'Hare and Midway is that the management consists of unqualified hacks.
