Mette to Jail Monday
- On Sunday, Bob Mette and his son, Mike, 30, will go to the game at Soldier Field to watch the Bears play the Lions.
On Monday, Bob will drive Mike to Iowa, to prison. Mike Mette, until recently a Chicago police officer, is scheduled to begin serving a 5-year prison sentence.
His crime? According to the judge's ruling, Mike threw one punch at an angry drunk who chased Mike down the street and attacked him verbally, physically, repeatedly.
Barring a miracle, this will go down as one of the saddest occurrences in American jurisprudence.

What the fuck are we doing? SCC why dont you plan a protest march on City hall in Iowa where he will be jailed? Why are we not making more noise FOP? How the fuck can we let him go to jail for something any cop or any citizen would and will do to defend his family? A bunch of morons are able to get a march together to protest the war but we cant get 5000 cops together and their families and friends to march for this great cause? A CPD officer could'nt get a fair trial in this country right now even in small claims court!!!! This is typical of our country nowadays. Anyone that cant see this is blind. Lawyers and law students spend yrs trying to get ghetto thugs off of death row for crimes THEY DID commit and people that did nothing but simply defend themselves go to prison. This country has become full of liberals. People dont want laws, they dont want to follow laws. A police officer and good man is going to jail for 5yrs with ghetto rats for defending himself? We should have done this before now, but a march on Iowas capital or around the judges home should have been called. All CPD members that are RDO or on furlough Monday should have rented buses to Iowa in support of Mette and embarrased the iowa legal system. Why can't the Iowa Court of Appeals stay the mittimus on Judge Monica Ackley's sentence until they review his appeal.
Then again, Michael Mette is NOT George Ryan.

Isn't there any way that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa - Eastern Dubuque Division or the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in St. Louis can stay the mittimus?

I'd like to read the motion filed by James Thompson, Dan Webb and their Winston & Strawn (W&S) partners that kept Ryan out of prison until his en banc appeal was denied by the Seventh Circuit this week.
It would not surprise me if W&S successfully petitions the Supreme Court to keep Ryan out of prison until they either deny or grant certiorari.

I find this so unbelievable that not one exempt or politican has made public this outrage against Mette. Where is FOP, Phil Cline and other leaders? Is it over for Mike while he sits in prison?

This whole convoluted Mette case is insane.
Under the bizarre circumstances of this case and based on the judge's own words and (lack of) reasoning, how could the Court deny a stay of mittimus to Mette pending the Iowa Court of Appeals ruling?
Under Iowa statutes, can't Iowa Gov. Chet Culver intervene by granting Mette a stay of mittimus?
SCC, you always harp on not allowing any "questionable" overtones to postings but this is one that screams for someone to speak the truth. Mike Mette is white and (gasp) a "blue-eyed devil" po-leese. He punched a drunk ASSAILANT to keep from being injured or incapacited. Had the punk he punched been black, the courts would have charged Mike with a hate crime, violation of the rats Civil Rights and attempted murder. On the other hand, if Mike had been black, there would have been a national outpouring of emotion for his release; Jesse, Al and the rest would have stated that laws were only applied to him because of his race and a federal Special Prosecutor would surely have been appointed to make things right.
Listening to the CLTV reports of a 21 year old man having been released from prison after being convicted of a criminal sexual assault drew glaring attention to the fact that BOTH the offender, then 17, and the victim, then 15, were black (obviously making it OK). CLTV reported that the crime was videotaped the during a 2003 New Years Eve party. When I looked up the story on CNN it made no mention of the videotaping but it repeated that the offender was an honor roll student and that the sex was consensual.
I Googled the search string “georgia man released consensual oral sex 17” and every return repeated that the offender was an “honor-roll student”, “football star”, “homecoming king”, but made no mention of videotape, drunk party (at which prosecutors maintained the victim was too intoxicated to consent), the reaction of the girls family or their discomfort about having jurors, court personnel and prosecutors watching their underage daughter getting her muffin buffed. Page after page from MSNBC to the Washington Post to the Seattle Times repeated that it was just like the “Jena 6” situation and was an “injustice.”
I had to go to the 33rd response on the 4th page of Google returns to read about the videotaping or that this guy not only had oral sex with the 15-year-old but was taped having intercourse with another 17 year old.
Mike’s case is a travesty. It’s an injustice. It goes against every right we hold dear. Not just defending himself, but consistently refusing to fight and withdrawing from the fight. But when Mike left the house that evening, it would all have been OK if only he’d have slipped that “race card” in to his wallet
No mention of honor roll, high-school sweetheart, 300-game bowling victory or any other personal info, just “cop batters student, gets arrested, receives stiff sentence.”

An order came out relating that if an officer has a rule violation 14 sustained in his/her past they are unable to be on a tact team or specialized unit. An officer has already been removed from the 22nd district tact team for a violation over 5 years ago. There are at least 2 sergeants in specialized units with rule 14 violations, will they be ship out ? One was for a gun swap, anyone care to chime in ?

I'm a retired cpd dic. In my seedy past I let an Iowa state trooper loose on a small shoplifting charge. He was accused of taking a clark bar at a 7-11, yes he was drinking and wanteed to fight.
I took 30 days and a nasty transfer but wouldn't give up the trooper. What happened to those days? Where is the payback????

We need to embarass Dubuque. Now, many of you guys and girls KNOW people, powerful people, people who can get the eyes and ears of the media.
It is time that they make some calls and get a boycott of Dubuque going. Next, get lists companies in Dubuque who ship products hear. Write themk and tell them we are boycotting their products.
If there are any PIs out there, we need to conduct an investigation into the Gothard family and Jacob, the alleged victim(criminal) and publish anything and everything.
We need to write to our so called representatives in DC and get them to demand that the US Attorney investigate this whole sorrid affair, including the family- Gothards-, the DA, the judge, the arresting officer, and the Police Department. It is evident that there are civil rights violations here. Do to them what is being done to us.
Oh, and for all of you morons out there, the Department cannot PUBLICLY back Mette- he is "technically" a convicted felon. But, I do know for a fact that he has had the private support from the bosses- up to the top.
FOP cannot and will not help, excedt for maybe a donation; lodge & is inept anyway.. But we can, as FOP members- remember we are members of a national organization- by writing to the National Lodge and demanding they get involved. They have the power. Bypass FOP7 and go to the top. Every member of the Chicago Police Department should at least e-mail the Governor of Iowa protesting this. The Judge is corrupt but maybe the Governor is not.

For those asking about the appeal, Mike's lawyers have started the process. Unfortunately, it is a waiting game and Mike can't be out waiting an appeal.

After reading the all the details of the case if Mette gets charged which I think he shouldn't, at most, it should have been a simple battery (misdemeanor). In my opinion, Mette was 100% justified. The judge and the prosecuter in this case should be fired. FOP needs to take a stand and fight for this officer. More than just a simple statement in the local newsletter or a 10 second filmed interview.

I applaud your honesty. I am feeling bad right now also because I, too, was all talk. Shame on all of us. I'm a retired cpd dic. In my seedy past I let an Iowa state trooper loose on a small shoplifting charge. He was accused of taking a clark bar at a 7-11, yes he was drinking and wanteed to fight.
I took 30 days and a nasty transfer but wouldn't give up the trooper. What happened to those days? Where is the payback????

I just wanted to take a second and thank everyone who has been there for me over the last two years and especially those that have made the last few months more bearable(not sure about the spelling on that one). For most of you this will be the last chance I get to say my thanks and goodbyes before i leave on monday. I just want you to now everything has its purpose and this too shall pass. I'll be out before you now it and hopefully in better shape than when i go in. Im not much for words or sentimentals so I'll leave you with this....

What has happened to Mette has nothing to do with Jesse, Sharpton, or black vs. white criminal justice. For ONCE, stop blaming blacks, and so-called "black activists" on this one. Great post!!! I agree with you - we need a leader that is untouched by clout - just a person who people respect and listen to - and Father Nagle is the best person I can think of. I think I am going to give him a call tomorrow. The officers on this department need something and maybe he can help us find that.
As far as Mike goes - my heart goes out to him and his family and friends. I don't personally know him, but it really doesn't matter when you see such a great injustice done to anyone.

EXACTLY!!! This is what I have said before here - don't blame anyone but the judge, police officer and prosecutor. We don't really know how the rest of Iowa feels about this. They may be as upset about it as we are. Once again, we need to place the blame where the blame belongs.

True, the citizens did not do this. BUT, District Attorneys, in Iowa are elected. I am not sure if the voters can vote not to retain a judge. But, if they cannot, the other elected officials can oust them. That is EXACTLY why people from Iowa should receive NO consideration when they violate a law or ordinance. The officials elected by the people of the state of Iowa have done nothing for Mike. So, why should any self respecting police officer do anything for anyone from that state?
Find out the name of this asshole Gothard's father's trucking company, and if one of his trucks ever drives through Chicago, enforce even the slightest violation of his vehicles. As far as banging everyone with an Iowa license plate, I recall that Iowa opened their 2007 football season at Soldier Field. That was a target rich environment. How many tickets were written to Iowa drivers? I'll bet not a lot. Iowa also will play Illinois in basketball this coming season. Wasn't the other asshole involved in the incident an Iowa basketball player? I'm not sure if he plays for the U of Iowa or some compass point school. It shouldn't be too hard to find out if his team is going to play in IL this year. As far as the supreme punk, Gothard, he is on some IA university golf team. Where are all of our police officer attorneys, as most of us have experienced, a savvy attorney can find fault and have almost every case overturned on a technicality....tho a tech. shouln't be needed to overturn a miscarriage of justice, the prime directive here is to get Mike out of the hellhole he is in. Clearing his name will be secondary, we all know the real deal anyways........
Someone should go punch that judge in the face and see how she reacts. How hypocritical if she punched back.

The governor of Iowa was reportedly "too busy" to consider reviewing or even commenting on the case. He sounds like a combination of Blago, Stroger, and King Daley. Or Arnold Schwarzeneggar. I've been told by several Iowa cops that the judge would have been even harsher (???) if Mette had been a black cop.

I'm not a cop, and I still gave money because I came across the story and found it ridiculous! But, this is YOUR brother in blue. This is YOUR fight pea brain! Iowa sucks! The father must have been friends with the judge or judge's family. Mette deserves an honor commendation for his SELF-RESTRAINT!
He did everything in his power to avoid a physical confrontation, and not knowing if the offender was armed or not and in his capacity as a PO, could have easily drawn weapon.
He was well within his right to defend himself, and used the LEAST amount of force to procure his safety and that of the public.
Even out of state, a PO still has his authority. Someone needs to go beyond a lawsuit and move to disbar the judge, he doesn't hold enough character nor the educational requirement to remain qualified to hold his seat on the bench!
Anyone do any dirt digging on the judge yet? GET TO WORK and UNITE!
Chuck Gowdy actually did another clip on the news last night (mon) defending Mette. Wow- Holy cow batman, a newsreporter actually on the side of a law enforcement officer..

That ass backwards town of Dubuque, Iowa sucks. I west to college there and it was the townies against the Loras college kids (mostly from Chicago and suburbs). U of Dubuque is like the Malcome X of this city. White trash getting a white trash eduation! All the idiots of Dubuque get educated together in one shitty "university." I read on the Chicago Trib blog that the "victims" family knew the judge. Hell yeah they knew the judge--all those fricken townies are related.
well, I for one say screw this "good luck, mike" stuff and say it's time to band together with those that want to help him out!!
growing up in clearing, that's how we did it here and how we still do it today.
i want to keep mike positive until we can put pressure on these goofs to get him OUT. it's all i can think about... how he had to turn over his things to property, then get searched, and now is in this cell. what if that was one of us? because we 'defended" outselves?

"Mighty Mouse" gave money too...But I haven't been bitching about how other people should step up pin head. I'm not a cop. I saw the story and thought it was shit. You can read I presume. Have you seen a protest the last year? SCC gave it plenty of attention. What else can they do? What else will you do...???

On Monday, Mike kept his head up high and turned himself in. He was in as good of spirits as anyone in his position can be. He has the love and support of his family, friends, and many of you who have never meet him. I thank you all for that.
For those of you asking about how to contact Mike: Once we get information we will make sure to post it. As of right now we have no access to Mike and he has no access to us. Please pray that he is safe and keep writing those letters to people in power.

Just got off the phone with the US Attorney Office. They are not going to look into this and stated that we should be contacting people in IOWA as this was done on a State level.
well, our police memorial is boycotting any form of business/personal travel to Iowa. I emailed Gov. Culver and let him know and the reason(s) why.
If I don't here from him w/i 2 weeks, then we will move forward to our next step. However I have already started the research on Iowa and their commerce.
For those of you wondering how Mike is doing. We heard from him and he is donig well. Next week he should be in a permanent place and then can receive letters, visitors, and make phone calls.
We will keep you posted! Keep praying and writing those letters.

if a policeman went to jai for defending himself all the thugs shoud be in jail so we wont have to do any police work but thats the fucking system a convicted felon is out an innocent man in
