- A suspended Chicago Police officer is being held without bond Monday after he was arrested last week on federal charges for allegedly planning the murder-for-hire of a fellow officer.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Cole ordered Jerome Finnigan held without bond during a detention hearing Monday morning, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney John Blakey. Finnigan is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Oct.15.
Cook County Board President Todd Stroger was working furiously this afternoon to convince just one county commissioner opposed to his sales tax increase to vote “present” so that it could pass.
With what appeared to be an 8-8 split, Stroger needed just one anti-tax commissioner to come to the middle on the plan to hike the county sales tax 266 percent — from 0.75 percent to 2.75 percent.
- Mayor Daley hasn’t raised property taxes in four years, but he’s about to break that streak with a bang.
Aldermen were told today that Daley wants to raise property taxes by $108 million — costing the owner of a $200,000 home roughly $57 more a year.
- More than 1,400 people have staked claim to the $12 million fund created to compensate victims of City Hall’s rigged hiring system, a federal monitor said today.
“It tells me what everyone has known all along: Political patronage continued to run rampant” in spite of the Shakman decree, said Ald. Joe Moore (49th).
Two brothers in their late 30s remained hospitalized, but were expected to live, after they stabbed each other with knives in front of their mother on her birthday Sunday night on the Southwest Side.
Both men remained hospitalized early Monday, but they are expected to live. No charges have been filed.

Hate to break it to ya but if the city that works ever gets a new mayor and police superintendant, taxes will rise like a smoke cloud from FatBoy. Our beloved Chicago Police Department needs serious capital investments and changes at all levels of its senior executive service ranks. That will cost a lot! When you factor in trying to address morale issues with a fair exam/promotion process, and salary increases as demanded by the FOP (icluding residency pay), taxes will skyrocket. So lets be careful of what we ask for.

11% Sales tax & add another 1/2% if you eat a restaurant in Chicago. Highest in the country by a long shot and for what? Don't forget the 3% state income tax and the 2% tax on basic food items as well. The county govt is so bloated and spends our money so recklessly without a say to the voters. We need referendums in this state. If this passes we all need to leave the county (or buy on the internet) to make our larger purchases and screw them out of the money. Where is the $2 a pack for cig money ($4.05 just for the taxes on a pack)? I thought that was suppose to solve all the county problems. I recently purchased some ammo (.40 cal)in Kenosha and paid considerably less than Chicagoland prices and only 5.1% taxes. I for one will make every effort to buy all of my non-everyday goods in Lake/DuPage county or the internet.
when will the city start fining and collecting tax on the illegal food vendors in the 10th police district there are hundreds of vendors by the schools everyday operated by illegals that are probably paid a few dollars a day slave labor

The head of the world Olympic committee will be here in Oct to visit Chicago on a world wind tour with the Mayor. Why don't we do some informational picketing to show him that we are under staffed and under payed. With security a major issue this might sway his decision on Chicago. If King Richie know that we might picket it might give us some leverage in contract talks. What a thought embarrass him and make him lose the Olympics at the same time. What do we have to lose. We are going to go to arbitration again and get what the city offers anyway. I think a real collective bargaining unit would be organizing something like this but alas we don't have on of those.

No, the time covered was Jan. 1, 2000 to May 31, 2007 and the applications had to be in by Sept. 28th.

I thought there was a clause in the Constitution that stated the Government could not tax on items nessesary to sustan life. This should include food, shelter, clothes and medicine.

I can remember corliss and schinker not well liked but they locked up street vendors and took their carts! Whats wrong with daley? mayor spineless! all over illegals are selling garbage out of dirty carts and nothing happens why? simple actually daley is scared of the hispanice vote even though they cannot vote "Vote daley the village idiot"!
